A huge benefit from this campsite was the hardwood forest surrounding it. Yes, they provide great scenery in autumn but they provide even better firewood. Finding good firewood in Maine is frequently a challenge due to thick softwood forests, but this area was loaded with maple, beech, and birch which all burn hotter, longer, and leave great coals for cooking. [GRAMMAS SHACK • JOHN] This has always been part time, just a hobby. I put in 17 years at GE in the jet engine division in Rutland, 10 years driving truck for Cisco Frosted Foods, then 13 years for the Town of Plymouth VT plowing, running grader, the dump truck… anything I got called to do. . It’s a long story, but I started making maple syrup in grade school. I had a little red wagon, coffee cans and spouts to hang onto the trees. My aunt would go out at noon and dump the cans because theyd be running over and Id come home and empty them again after school. . I’d use galvanized tubs and boil the sap on an open fire, then my grandma would finish it in the kitchen on the stove. Then over time it progressed to the point I had an operation with a friend with eight to ten thousand taps, making two thousand gallons of syrup. That was back when I was young and foolish back when I was in my twenties. . Now I just keep seven to eight hundred taps and make about 150 gallons of syrup a year. All my taps are about 30 miles away on leased land down in E. Wallingford so I have to truck my sap in. I have a 300 gallon tank that goes on my truck so I bring it up 300 gallons at a time. Maine fishermen who are struggling due to hard-hitting tariffs can apply for the recently announced Seafood Trade Relief Program beginning on Monday, September 14. According to a report in the Portland Press Herald, the program, led by the US Department of Agriculture, will pay licensed fishermen a specie-specific amount for every pound landed in 2019 to absorb sales declines and increased marketing cost caused by China’s retaliatory tariffs.” . Watching whales all day everyday is what we do but sometimes we forget that for most people, seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat is a dream. Given the travel limitations currently in place and considering that there are many people who live with varying physical, intellectual, sensory and learning disabilities, going whale watching can be farther out of reach. Yesterday we shared a virtual whale watch with over 40 camp participants through @eastersealsbcy - the honest interest and elation on the participants’ faces was a warm reminder for us that sharing the wonder of the West Coast with guests (whether in person or virtually) is a special job to have. A lot of time, energy, head-scratching and everything in between went into the making of this Striped Bass. It is mounted on the front of @charliesbaitntackle. This piece was made using recycled cedar shingles from the bait shop it rests on. A cedar face was hand carved and burnt. The eye was poured by @charliesbaitntackle using a two part resin. Boat of the Month: Khristy Michelle⠀ ⠀ John Williams, of Stonington, Maine, started fishing with his father when he was only 6 years old, and from then on, hes lived a life on the water. I fished an outboard in high school and bought his 34-foot Jonesporter when I graduated. We went groundfishing during the 80s and back lobstering in 1990.⠀ ⠀ Today, Williams lobsters on his 8-year-old Khristy Michelle, which he named after two of his nieces. I had it built at Johns Bay Boat Company, in South Bristol Maine, by Peter Kass and crew (on) Nov. 12, 2012. Most people think wooden boats are more expensive, but they are not. Wood isnt as expensive as resin.⠀ ⠀ Williams is pleased with the way Kass built the Khristy Michelle.⠀ ⠀ Peter designed my boat. This is the second boat he built for me. My last boat was 41 feet. We extended this one to 44 feet to get a better run.
