Fri 9/25, supplies must go to Heritage. ****label NN supplies**** in the late 1800s, our settler govt redrew a reservation line, creating an overlap between the Hopi and Navajo Nations. together, the tribes were stewards of the land and its minerals for nearly a century. in the mid-70s, seeing an opportunity to extract profit, John Boyden, a lawyer working in secret for Peabody Coal, used Indigenous dissent as a tool to take advantage of settler fear of Indigenous protest movements. he aided and abetted the US govt and energy companies in destabilizing the tribes to gain control of the resources of the land. Boyden fabricated a dispute between the tribes in order to justify a partition - for which he lobbied on their behalf - for which they paid him. though he was the attorney for each tribe, neither knew he was in the pocket of Peabody Coal. the partition was granted, resulting in the govt telling the Navajo they were now on Hopi land and had to completely relocate their entire lives, their entire history.  when they were moved, they were moved to border towns, hundreds of miles from their homeland. without the land, there was no way to maintain their traditions, livelihood, and way of life. many fell into abject poverty with no semblance of their old lives in these new places, and a quarter of the elders died - away from their families, their lands, their way of life.  govt men drug monstrous chains and destructive implements across the land to destroy the vegetation for both the people and the animals. the land was destroyed amid decades of aquifer draining (water which was rerouted to Phx), and the pollution that resulted from the toxic mining of the coal and uranium still remains. this capitalistic brutality resulted in twice the national average of birth defects, likely from the radiation.  it was not only through legislative robbery that these people have been subject to state violence, but by the entire desecration of their land and their bodies, above and below.  the supplies we gather are for the resistance communities who remain, having resisted decades of physical and economic genocide. - @mutualaidphx on Instagram

Sometimes you have to disappear into the woods with one of your best girlfriends, a bottle or two of champagne, good weed, and lots of belly laughs and good conversation. Time well spent. One of the many valuable lessons I’ve learned over the last several months is that my boundaries are important, and I will no longer glorify busyness in my life. Connecting with loved ones is still allowed and if you can do it, do it. I forgot how much I needed it. Check in on your friends, I think we are all lonely and are longing for that connection. I know I was. Allowing myself to get away and enjoy the moment only recharged me and allows me to be better, it always also gives me perspective and reaffirms my commitment to honoring myself and my mental health above all else. The fire is essentially out here in the Yakima Canyon, and we expect the highway and floating to reopen tomorrow. The fire crews are still monitoring a few of the warm spots, but there is no flame and almost no smoke being generated by our local fire here. Further into Eastern Washington, which is very dry and essentially a desert, has some nasty fires still burning. Thankfully today the wind has laid down and we hope and pray the fires are encountering some natural fire breaks. The Eagles Nest Pine Tree (in photo) just upstream from Reds, wich has had nesting bald eagles for nearly 20 years was spared. The fire burned up to the railroad tracks and we are really grateful it didnt torch all of the riparian zones. Gratefully we are seeing a lot of unburned islands of sagebrush, grass, and many of the pines and other small bushes survived. Definitely one of my favorite paintings I made on my Eastern Sierras trip. We hiked up to 10,000 feet from camp late in the afternoon to Lone Pine lake beneath Mount Whitney. After a quick icy swim in the lake I laid my clothes out to dry and gave myself 45 minutes to make a painting so that we could return to camp before dark. It was expressive and instinctive, mixing mostly on the canvas and moving quickly, intuitively and looking intensely. Very rewarding. So much of this piece I hope to carry Into my next paintings. My friend took loads of super Rad video footage of me painting this so keep your eyes out for the Video blog I post next. On this day..... On June 10 1692, Bridget Bishop, the first person to be tried in court on charges of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials, was executed at Proctor’s Ledge. Her body was placed in a crevice at Proctor’s Ledge as witches could not have a proper burial. Bridget was arrested and examined on April 19 and was held for trial. On June 2, she was tried and convicted of witchcraft. Her execution was 8 days later. Bridget was any easy target for accusation as she had a undesirable past, including a previous accusation for witchcraft (for which she was acquitted). The many accusations against her included the murder of her two previous husbands, men who did construction work to her basement found poppets in the walls, she bewitched the Shattuck’s son who became ill, the stealing of various items including a mill brass, having her imps harass her neighbor, and the sight of Bridget flying over her own orchard, among many other charges. Ten neighbors testified against her at her trial. Bridget is often confused for Sarah Bishop as they were both married to men called Edward Bishop. Bridget lived in Salem Town and owned an orchard. Today were proud to launch one of the largest restoration projects in Australia’s history, planting 25 million biodiverse trees across 20,000 hectares by 2025 (that’s equivalent to one-quarter the size of Canberra!) This large-scale project will create habitat for dozens of endangered species, sequester vast quantities of carbon, and create economic opportunities for Traditional Owners and rural communities. Managing alien species in Napier The residents of Napier may recently have seen our Flower Valley team assessing and mapping the extent of invasive alien plants along the Klipdrift river. Where the North Folk of the Clearwater River enters the main channel of the Clearwater, the Corps of Discovery were exhausted and famished. It was the end of September 1805 and the difficult trek over the Continental Divide was finally behind them. But on this point of land over an 11-day period, they worked incredibly hard. This was Canoe Camp. The Corps arrived on September 26 and immediately searched for food. Deer and other large prey was nowhere to be found, so a horse was eaten. Then they tried fat dogs of the Indians. The crew was divided into five groups, and each with axes too small for the task, they began hacking away at five huge trees – probably red cedar or possibly ponderosa pine. They saved labor by building fires along the tops of the logs, as taught them by the Nez Perce, then scraped out the ashes and charred wood. They dried and repacked their possessions, branded and cut the forelocks off their 38 surviving horses so the animals were easily recognized when mixed with the Nez Perce herds. Finally, in the dark of night, they cached their saddles and some powder for the return trip over the divide. Four of the canoes are believed to have been large, although no journal keeper reported any dimensions. The fifth canoe was smaller, designed to more easily scout ahead of the others and check on the conditions of the rivers. On October 7, the men broke camp, loaded the canoes and shoved off around noon. For the first time since the fall of 1803, when they left the Ohio River, Lewis and Clark were going with the flow of a river, instead of against it. Today, Canoe Camp is a part of the 38-site Nez Perce National Historical Park. The camp site is within the unincorporated town of Ahsahka, Idaho, about 50 miles east of Lewiston.
