Workington Hall. The hall itself was built around a 14th C pele tower, being extended and modified in the centuries that followed. The first picture shows one of the round headed windows of the left wing. The gatehouse of Workington Hall was built, along with some other parts of the Castle by John Carr for the Curwen family, between 1783-1787. The following pictures are of what would have been the kitchen area. You can see the three fires that would have served to heat the food. It is likely that here would have also been an oven in this space too but from my position outside I couldn’t see it to photograph. Do you know about the origins of Labor Day as a holiday? Though often overlooked, Labor Day is rooted in the labor strikes that occurred in the early 1890s at the Pullman Palace Car Company. George Pullman, who founded the nation’s first model industrial town to attract skilled workers, and the Pullman Company’s efforts to closely regulate residents’ behavior came to a head in 1894. In response to an economic downturn the company laid off workers and reduced wages without reducing the rent, leading to one of the most divisive labor strikes in American history (and legislation creating the Labor Day holiday). The Pullman neighborhood in Chicago, IL also has a historic connection to the first all African-American union in the country—the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters—which negotiated a major labor agreement with the Pullman Company in 1937 leading to better wages and hours. More pictures of the remarkable stained glass windows by Chagall at the special place that is the Union Church of #PocanticoHills, which I visited today on a half-hour trip upstate. These are among the nine by Chagall that tell biblical stories and there is also the Rose Window by Matisse. John D. #Rockefeller was among the founders of the church in 1915. The family commissioned the windows which are dedicated to various family members. Chagall’s are complex compositions that involve glass layered one color on another so the two had perfect adhesion. The last step involved grisaille painting on the surface of the glass, the artist often digging and scratching into it, to control the amount of light coming through. Церковь святого Александра Невского — недействующий православный храм в Петергофе, в парке Александрия. В обиходе известен как Капелла. Торжественную закладку церкви совершил 24 мая 1831 года духовник Императора протопресвитер Николай Музовский в Высочайшем присутствии. Летом 1834 года строительство было закончено, и 3 июля 1834 года состоялось торжественное освящение церкви во имя святого благоверного великого князя Александра Невского, совершённое тем же протопресвитером Николаем Музовским в Высочайшем присутствии. Храм являлся домовой церковью императорской семьи, богослужения в нём проводились только в летний период. Церковь расположена на открытом возвышенном месте. Здание построено в неоготическом стиле. Отсюда её второе обиходное наименование — Капелла. Храм оформлен порядка тысячью художественными деталями, отлитыми в 1832 году на Александровском литейном заводе из чугуна по моделям М. Соколова. Из медных листов были выбиты 43 статуи по моделям скульптора В. И. Демут-Малиновского. Над каждым порталом устроено круглое окно-роза с витражом, исполненным на Санкт-Петербургском стеклянном заводе, над которыми расположено по фигуре ангела. Цветные стёкла вставлены в стрельчатые окна. В отделке интерьера были использованы мотивы готики. Внутренняя роспись церкви была выполнена художником А. Nel 1975 ha aperto la galleria che portava il suo nome Galleria Philippe Daverio, in via Monte Napoleone 6 a Milano, dove si occupava prevalentemente di movimenti d’avanguardia della prima metà del Novecento. Nel 1986 viene aperta a New York la Philippe Daverio Gallery rivolta all’arte del XX secolo. Nel 1989 apre a Milano in corso Italia 49 una seconda galleria di arte contemporanea. Specializzato in arte italiana del XX secolo, ha dedicato i suoi studi al rilancio internazionale del #novecento. Come gallerista ed editore ha allestito molte mostre e pubblicato una cinquantina di titoli, tra cui il Catalogo ragionato dell’opera di Giorgio De Chirico fra il 1924 e il 1929 e il Catalogo generale e ragionato dell’opera di Gino Severini. È stato nella giunta Formentini del comune di Milano dal 1993 al 1997, dove ricopriva l’incarico di assessore con le deleghe alla Cultura, al Tempo Libero, all’Educazione e alle Relazioni Internazionali. EL TEATRO JOVELLANOS AMPLÍA SU AFORO A 559 ESPECTADORES La Consejería de Salud del Principado de Asturias aprobó el proyecto presentado por Divertia Las entradas para los espectáculos del último trimestre se pondrán a la venta esta semana El Teatro Jovellanos ampliará su aforo en los espectáculos programados en el último trimestre del año 2020. Hasta la fecha, desde la apertura del coliseo en el mes de julio el aforo se había reducido a 100 espectadores en el patio de butacas y desde el mes de octubre se ampliará a 559 espectadores distribuidos en patio de butacas, entresuelo y general. La Consejería de Salud del Principado de Asturias aprobó el proyecto presentado por Divertia, en el que se solicitaba dicha ampliación, tras aportar los informes y la documentación pertinentes. De esta manera, el Teatro Jovellanos pondrá a la venta las localidades para los espectáculos de octubre, noviembre y diciembre esta misma semana. Como deferencia, los habituales abonados del Teatro podrán adquirir las entradas (no hay abonos este trimestre) para los espectáculos que deseen mañana día 16 y pasado mañana día 17 de septiembre, mientras que el resto del público podrá adquirirlas a partir del día 18. Las localidades para los conciertos/grabación del Proyecto #Encaja2 se pondrán a la venta el día 18. Los puntos de venta son: Taquilla del Teatro Jovellanos, de 12:00 h a 14:00 y de 17:30 a 20:00 horas, red TickExpress de Liberbank (Cajeros y teléfono 24 horas 902106601) y en la web: www.teatrojovellanos.com. Bun venit, așadar, în Sala Oglinzilor a Palatului Culturii din Târgu Mureș, clădire impresionantă ale cărei detalii arhitecturale speciale și destul de insolite pentru trecătorul neavizat sunt totuși de neratat. Vitraliile ample sunt spectaculoase și vorbesc atât despre avansul tehnologic și libertatea de expresie permisă astfel artiștilor noului stil (forme naturale, culori vibrante, structuri ample în fier, plumb și sticlă colorată - opalescentă sau transparentă), cât mai ales despre particularitatea curentelor locale ale acestui stil cu inspirații și idealuri multiple (Art Nouveau-ul belgian și francez poartă numele de Jugendstil în Germania și Finlanda, Stilo Liberty în Italia, Modernismo catalan în Spania sau Secession în spațiul austro-ungar) Am ales, spre exemplificare o primă poveste spusa de unul dintrele cele patru vitralii centrale din Sala Oglinzilor care prezintă balade populare maghiare. Kádár Kata (Două flori de paraclis) vorbește despre tragedia căsătoriei interzise în contextul relaţiilor sociale feudale. Как великолепны ее стройные фасады, как чудесен тот факт, что в «тайных» ее частях сохранились артефакты ушедшего времени. Тут вам и оригинальные двери с фурнитурой, и метлах, и ковка, и засовы с замками. Гуляя по черному ходу невольно задумываешься, какой нынче год... Да и на заднем дворе все как-то дивно старомодно - тут вам и тишина, и покой, и старые санитарочки в белых халатах, что простонародными голосами обсуждают всякую всячину. Услада сплошная. И все это под кронами ароматных елок, да на вскрытых десятком слоев масляной краски скамейках — чудовищно по-киевски. Почему чудовищно? Да потому, что это уже прошлое. А внутри-то как! Мраморные лестницы, потолки метров в пять, а полы скрипят так, что дух захватывает! А витражи какие! Хоть и совок сплошной, а приятно. Атмосфера там, в тех старых коридорах, классная... The Bishop Hooper Monument and Gloucester Cathedral in the background. Located a short walk from Gloucester Cathedral is the Bishop Hooper Memorial is a pretty historic monument in St Mary’s Square. The best way to find this is by passing through Saint Mary’s Gate to the west of the main building. This is found in the gardens of St Mary de Lode Church and is quite impressive. The monument commemorates Bishop Hooper who was burnt at the stake in 1555. He was killed because of his protestant religious beliefs. This memorial was built in between the years of 1861-63. 🇮🇹Il “Compianto su Cristo morto” fu disegnato da Andrea del Castagno nel 1444 ca. Supponiamo che entro un anno la vetrata sia stata terminata poiché risulta posto in loco lultimo occhio del tamburo. La scena di impianto piramidale, con le figure disposte a semicerchio, raffigura il compianto sul Cristo morto deposto dalla croce. In piedi sono raffigurati Giuseppe dArimatea e Nicodemo mentre sotto la croce sono rimasti la Madonna, le tre Marie e San Giovanni. Questa straziante scena non viene narrata in dettaglio nei Vangeli. Come nella Pietà, si tratta di uninterpretazione del tutto umana e sentimentale. La vetrata, carica di pathos, riesce a conservare i tratti tipici dell’artista. Spiccano la chiarezza ed equilibrio della composizione e la vivace cromia. La bordura è decorata da una ghirlanda di foglie e fiori a cinque petali e da alcuni medaglioni con allinterno stelle, la luna, il sole ed altri fiori. 🌍The Lamentation of Christ was designed by Andrea del Castagno in 1444 ca. We believe that the window was finished within a year because the last eye of the drum was placed on site. The pyramidal scene, with the figures arranged in a semicircle, depicts the lamentation over the dead Christ taken down from the cross. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are standing, while at the foot of the cross we see Christ’s relatives and closest friends. This heartbreaking scene is not told in detail in the Gospels. As in the ‘Pietà’, it is a completely human and sentimental interpretation. The stained glass window, of intense pathos, manages to preserve this artist’s typical traits. The clarity and balance of the composition together with the lively colors stand out. Our upcoming exhibition, “Judson Studios: Stained Glass from Gothic to Street Style,” includes both contemporary and historical works of art. Here is a stained glass window and watercolor by Frederick Wilson, who was among the most prominent stained glass artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He worked for Tiffany Studios in New York for nearly 30 years, spending much of his time as head of their Ecclesiastical Department. In the early 1920s he moved to Los Angeles where he would design windows for Judson Studios during the final decade of his life. . 📚 Both of these artworks are also featured in the new book, JUDSON: Innovation in Stained Glass by David Judson and Steffie Nelson. Queen Margaret of Anjou and wife of King Henry VI of England died #OnThisDay, the 25th August 1482, aged 52. This panel depicts the heraldic shields of Queen Margaret and shows a large crown surmounting shield of arms with quartered fleur-de-lys and lions, supported with two yales. The right light depicts a crown surmounting eight quarterings; on the left are the arms of England and France, on the right are fleur-de-lys, fish and cross pattern. These heraldic shields are supported by eagles and a mythical beast - the yale - with the head of an antelope and the body of a lion Queen Margaret was one of the principal figures in the series of dynastic civil wars known as the Wars of the Roses and at times personally led the Lancastrian faction. Owing to her husbands frequent bouts of insanity, Margaret ruled the kingdom in his place. It was she who called for a Great Council in May 1455 that excluded the Yorkist faction headed by Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York, and thus provided the spark that ignited a civil conflict that lasted for over thirty years, decimated the old nobility of England, and caused the deaths of thousands of men, including her only son Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales, at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. These panels were made c. 1843 by the stained glass artist William Miller. Miller trained as a plumber and glazier but had developed his business, which was based in Soho, London, to produce stained glass by the 1840s The panel is originally from Crockerton Church in Wiltshire, however once this church was no longer in use, the panels were cleaned and repaired the workshop of Salisbury Cathedral before coming to The @stainedglassmuseum . The panel is also a faithful copy of a 15th-century armorial in the Great Hall at Ockwells in Berkshire. This window combines traditional glass-painting techniques with those of enamel painting, used here to decorate the crown. 📷 St Michaels Church, Churchill, Worcestershire The church of St Michael, Churchill stands, as the name suggests, on a small hill. The church is almost surrounded by trees and high hedges, with its lack of a tower making the building a hidden, delightfully secluded and peaceful place. Much of the structure of St Micheal’s dates from the 14th century, though some fragments of earlier buildings have been used in the walls. It is a simple two-cell church with a nave and chancel only, made mostly out of local blue lias. The timber south porch was added in 1910 in memory of the Revd John Bates, a former rector and his wife Emma. The adjoining south wall of the nave was almost completely reconstructed in 1910 as it leaned dangerously outwards and had done so for at least a hundred years. Inside the minimal use of stained glass means that the church is bathed in light. Though the glass that is in the church is rather charming. The three-light east window was restored in the 1860s and contains a small shield of the Wysham family who were lords of the manor in the 14th century. Near the pulpit is a window, rediscovered in 1910 and glazed with diamond-shaped quarries, illustrating many flowers that can be found locally. The nave walls, now bare of plaster, reveal the lias stone and hints of earlier masonry - possibly Norman, can be found in the north and south walls. The simple octagonal font near the entrance is 15th-century, the cover is probably Jacobean. The nave seating was renewed in 1910 using earlier oak ends and the curtained vestry at the west end is made up from pieces of 17th-century box pews. Are you an avid churchcrawler with a camera? Join us at @themountlenox for October Bistro Evening Pop-Ups, featuring seasonal food and drinks served outside The Stable! Bundle up and join us near The Stable for October weekends of fall-themed fun! Collaborating with local caterers with food trucks, The Mount is hosting Friday and Saturday bistro evenings and Sunday brunches on our grounds through the month of October. The Friday and Saturday bistro hours will be from 3:00 – 7:00 pm, and Sunday brunch will be served from 10:00 am – 1:30 pm. Menu items for purchase will vary weekly and are inspired by seasonal flavors. A selection of craft beers, wine, cider, and specialty cocktails will also be available. We will be providing fire pits and patio heaters, but please dress warmly for outdoor seating. Seating is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended. Most tables seat four, so please call 413-551-5100 if you would like to accommodate a party size of up to ten people. Please note that reserving one ticket includes your whole table. The pop-ups are weather-dependent. Please check our website for any schedule changes due to weather. All patrons will be asked to wear a face covering except when sitting at their table.
