San Diego police made 35,038 stops of Black people during a 12 month period in a city of 88,774 Black residents. White people were stopped at a rate of 130 per 1,000. Black people were stopped at a rate of 415 per 1,000. The disparity is clear. BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) has arrested a total of 87 people connected to the growing Employment Development Department (EDD) identity theft and fraud scandal. Police initially arested 47 people last week but that number has now nearly doubled. Detectives revealed that they recovered 181 fraudulent EDD cards valued over $3.6 million. They also found another $466,000 in cash and seven handguns. Authorities stated that most of the suspects aren’t from California. Investigators allege that they were able to access the EDD website and apply for unemployment under someone else’s name; primarily people who are deceased, elderly in nursing homes or in jail. “Shoes, clothing, purses. Anything of high dollar value they were spending on EDD cards,” said Beverly Hills Police Department Lt. Max Subin. “Eighty percent of the arrestees were from out of state, and they were renting Airbnb’s and renting high end cars.” EDD just announced a two-week reset period — halting all new unemployment claims and further designated to process claimant payments faster, reduce fraud, and tackle backlog issues. A new identification verification process will be implemented in which applicants will have to upload their ID and a selfie. The BHPD said they are working with the FBI and the Department of Labor in regards to the wide scope of the fraud. The suspected arrested did not have any weapons on them and were booked for identity theft. However, since it is a nonviolent offense and there is no bail due to COVID-19, they were released. A recent study shows that rampant use of the “China virus to refer to the coronavirus, particularly by conservative outlets, had a profound impact on how those in the U.S. see Asian Americans. The research, published in the journal Health Education & Behavior, examined racially charged coronavirus coverage in media and its impact on bias against Asian Americans. While anti-Asian bias had been in steady decline for over a decade, the trend reversed in days after a significant uptick in discriminatory coronavirus speech. The language led to an increased subconscious belief that Asian Americans are “perpetual foreigners,” researchers said. “Research suggests that when people see Asian Americans as being more ‘foreign,’ they are more likely to express hostility toward them and engage in acts of violence and discrimination,” Rucker Johnson, a public policy professor at the @UCBerkeleyOfficial and co-author of the study, told #NBCAsianAmerica. It’s Black history month in the U.K. and I refuse to re hash the same conversation and talk we have been saying, after the rubbles of Black squares and empty platitudes settle. We know we gotta be here all damn year, we been here.. So I will share something I had written for my column on metro from last year. As always, rooting for everybody Black (and Black queer and trans to the front) . “As a kid, Black History Month can sometimes feel like a time in school where you are hungry to learn. For once you see an authority figure (your teacher), giving information that includes people like you. So often the exchange of knowledge in schools is that a white person (your teacher), tells you important things that another white person (someone in history) did, and you (the non white person) listen. Although we often see Blackness and queerness as an axis of ‘multiple oppression’, what learning about our history enables us to do is to flip that lens. I refuse to believe that this does not have prolonged effects on how and who we view as carriers of knowledge. So when Black History Month comes along, or when a teacher decides to bring Blackness into a class, it is natural that the importance of who is featured and how the lessons are taught feels greater. But as it stands, when Blackness is involved, straightness and cisness is, too. What this does is create an ahistorical approach to our history. It does a disservice to the richness and complexities that Blackness holds. And I believe this great affects young Black LGBT+ people’s aspirations, possibilities and health. Statistics show that LGBT+ people of colour experience higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination than our white community members. It is clear to me that we must be tackling this from all sides – including our history. Whether that be talking about examples of gender non-conformity in precolonial African religions, or the genius writings of Black queer figures like James Baldwin or Alice Dunbar Nelson.....” 🖤🖤 - @travisalabanza on Instagram

My first published paper!!!! ☺️ This paper can be found in Frontiers for Neurosciences. It was a pilot study we did at @cedarssinai - the first of our ketogenic diet trials in cancer. We evaluated 12 patients with mixed CNS malignancies (gliomas, astrocytomas, and GBM) to see how the ketogenic diet would effect them. Most patients were following a 3:1 or 2:1 ketogenic diet. Most patients were also on cancer directed therapy (Avastin, CCNU, TMZ) while following the diet. Overall, most patients did well on the diet and had improvement in quality of life, symptom burden and maintained ketosis (0.5 mM). . For background - this entire project started in early 2016. Many know Frederick Douglass as an abolitionist, which he was. Still, he was also one of the 32 men who attended the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 and signed the Declaration of Sentiments, demanding the right to vote. At the 1888 International Council of Women in Washington, he used his male privilege and platform at the time to recognize the intersectionality of the movements. When I ran away from slavery, it was for myself; when I advocated emancipation, it was for my people, Douglass told the crowd. But when I stood up for the rights of woman, self was out of the question, and I found a little nobility in the act. Morris took his ancestors words to heart, following in his footsteps to abolish modern-day slavery and human trafficking. In 2007 he co-founded The Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, which works across dozens of counties across California, as well as cities in Utah and Texas, seeking to unfit communities to allow slavery to exist and thrive. In the last week or so I’ve seen the pandemic finally start to overwhelm our hospitals. Previously we’d been seeing a slow trickle of very sick patients through A&E. Those patients were almost exclusively suffering with CoV. They have now filled up our intensive care beds in many hospitals and with no more capacity we have no choice but to keep people comfortable and allow them to die. Now more than ever it’s important to stay socially isolated and slow the spread of this virus. The vast majority of young people only have mild symptoms or none at all. But you may still be shedding virus. It’s the elderly man you walk past on the street. Or the diabetic mother in the queue behind you who will get seriously sick. Thankfully we’re barely seeing any children affected at all. One thing to reflect on is how few people are coming to hospital with anything other than CoV. A&E would usually be full to the brim with people suffering from minor complaints. This shows how horribly abused Emergency Department’s are during non-pandemic times. When this is all over and we have survived, our hospitals, politicians and people need to reflect on this. We need to re-set the status quo that Emergency Departments are for emergencies only! A suspect is in custody and will be booked at the county jail, he’s just not very likely to be held very long with current State booking requirements. Acredito, piamente, que o planejamento nutricional deva seguir as demandas impostas pelas fases do treinamento físico/esportivo. A “PERIODIZAÇÃO NUTRICIONAL” per se não se sustenta, não existe. O que existe é o planejamento do processo de preparação do #atleta para a #competição (que alguns denominam como #Periodização do #TreinamentoEsportivo). A Periodização do Treinamento Esportivo determinará alterações deliberadas nas cargas externas de treinamento (por exemplo, fase de intensificação vs. fase de polimento) que repercutirão internamente, promovendo alterações metabólicas e fisiológicas. Essas alterações internas, por sua vez, poderão influenciar a necessidade de energia e nutrientes. O #nutricionista, portanto, precisa estar integrado ao processo de preparação do atleta, entendendo as demandas do treinamento físico/esportivo e elaborando #recomendaçõesnutricionais específicas a cada fase. It’s disturbing to watch isn’t it? Well watch it again and again. Watch how hatred made this man bleed from the nose and then urinate himself which trickled down to the curb. Watch how he took his last breath. And then ask yourself...are you a racist? For a minute, I’ll address Australia and the culture we seem to accept. There seems to be this all to familiar pattern that racist remarks are a joke. And if you are on the receiving end and don’t take it well, you’re a “sook”. Well you know what, I’ve noticed that those people who call others sooks for not accepting the “joking” racism that comes their way, are usually people who have never received racism themselves. They are dishing it out, but fortunately for them, they haven’t felt what it’s like to be on the receiving end. They don’t know what it feels like to be segregated because of the colour of their skin or their racial background or their religion. If you are someone who racially “jokes”, your ignorance is what killed this man. Your jokes are what killed this man. Because it’s not a joke... There is an underlying issue to all of it, and it needs to be stopped, now. Racism should never be ok. And if you stand there and watch it, or laugh in the face of it, you are the same as the police officers who watched George Floyd suffocate to death and not do a damn thing to stop it. This goes much deeper and much broader than the act of murder by this man obviously filled with hatred. It’s also highlighted a global issue, and because of it, there must be change. George Floyd will not die in vain. I stand with the African American community in their March (peacefully) toward equality and justice. We must all make change in everyday life. Based on what we do know — which I’ve culled from my own reporting, reporting from the New York Times and the Louisville Courier-Journal, as well as from conversations with the lawyers for Taylor’s family — the decision to charge Detective Brett Hankison with wanton endangerment was probably correct, as was the decision not to charge the other officers involved in the shooting. If ballistics had conclusively shown that one of the bullets from Hankison’s gun killed Taylor, he could be charged with reckless homicide, but according to Cameron, the bullets that struck Taylor could not be matched to Hankison’s gun. There’s the problem that the police who conducted the raid were relying on a warrant procured by another officer, which was then signed by a judge. There were many flaws and abrogations in that process, but it would be unfair and not legal to hold them accountable for any of that. But “not illegal” should not mean “immune from criticism.” Part of the problem was Cameron himself, who was selective in what information he released to the point of misleading the public about key facts in the case. (This raises real questions about whether the grand jury was also misled. That’s why an attorney for Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker, who fired at the police during the raid, is demanding that Cameron release the evidence that was presented to the grand jury.) Furthermore, Taylor’s death was not, as Cameron suggested, simply a tragedy for which no one is to blame. The police work in this case was sloppy, and the warrant service was reckless. Taylor is dead because of a cascade of errors, bad judgment and dereliction of duty. And it’s important that the record on this be clear. The self-employed career concreter by the name of Ernie Margolis cackles to himself with a proper gold tooth glistening in the sun, after insinuating that he has engaged in buried bound and gagged victim of organised crime or personal vendetta. In fact, Ernie follows up his joke by suggesting he’s actually killed more than one person. After an initial smoko conversation about how the severe heat was making his job harder, as the concrete was setting faster than usual, Ernie refers to the concrete slab in front of him as both the livelihood and bane of his existence. “These fucking things cause me so much shit. She complained to police and the Humane Society, but now she has ended up getting arrested and charged with assault! Turns out the neighbour works in the Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion office at the @uofwaterloo. “Erin Farrow came out of the apartment, she was already screaming at her partner. The majority of the Fresno City Council decided Thursday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom to ask for permission to open indoor dining, and effectively killed a proposed approach to allow all businesses to open citywide. The letter’s supporters said it was the best way to work within the system and safely open restaurants and other businesses that are restricted under orders related to the coronavirus. The letter got a 5-2 approval from the council. Many businesses closed in March after local and state orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic. ILLEGAL WEAPONS DISCOVERED AFTER PURSUIT Here is another example of the dangers our officers face each day when protecting our neighborhoods from people who are intent on causing harm. Over the weekend on Sunday, September, 27, 2020 right before 7:30 a.m., a patrol officer attempted to stop a silver Honda Accord for vehicle code violations at California Avenue and Kingsbury Street, but the driver failed to pull over and yield. The driver led the officer on a short pursuit until he collided into a pole at Van Buren Boulevard and Wells Avenue. He then fled on foot through an apartment complex for a couple hundred yards but the officer was able to catch up and safely take the driver into custody. When officers searched the Honda, they located a loaded AR-15 short-barreled rifle, a 20-gauge shotgun, loaded high-capacity magazines and additional ammunition, a flash bang grenade, military-style ballistic vest, and full facemasks. David Castillo Jr., 18-years-old of Riverside, was arrested and taken to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking. He was later booked into jail for felonies that included several weapons violations and evading police, along with resisting arrest. A bail enhancement was obtained and he is currently being held on $200,000 bail. We are still looking into what this 18-year-old was doing with these illegal weapons and equipment. But whatever his criminal intentions were, we are fortunate our patrol officer was at the right place and time to take another dangerous person off the streets. - @riversidepolicedepartment on Instagram

In sum, Page has spent over $200,000 on personal items generated from donations received through BLMGA Facebook page with no identifiable purchase or expenditure for social or racial justice, FBI agent Matthew Desorbo said. Sir Maejor Page, 32, was arrested Friday in Toledo, Ohio, and is facing federal wire fraud and money laundering charges for allegedly spending the money on tailored suits, a home in Ohio, and guns. Page became involved with the Black Lives Matter movement in 2016 when he founded the Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta on Facebook. He used the page to solicit donations through a GoFundMe account, the FBI said. Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta raised nearly $470,000 between June and August, following the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day. “Numerous videos and livestream videos were posted to Page’s personal social media pages showing himself in what appeared to be newly purchased clothing, hotel rooms and office space in Atlanta,” the FBI said in its release. “Several audio statements are made by Page in the videos boasting about the money he has, his tailored suits, his nice cufflinks and ‘$150 dollar ties.’” He was charged with one count of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering. - @ppv_tahoe on Instagram

After attacking the victim, the suspect forcibly removed the victim from the vehicle, entered the driver seat and drove away in an unknown direction. The elderly victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for serious injuries to his head and remained hospitalized for over a week. Since the violent attack, the victim has been released from the hospital. Culver City Detectives conducted follow-up investigations and through forensic evidence and video surveillance identified 20-year old Jonathan Rosas as the suspect. On September 22nd, Detectives located Rosas in the city of Inglewood, where he was arrested for carjacking. The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the following criminal charges were filed on Rosas: PC 215 (Carjacking) and PC 368 (B) (1) (Elder Abuse). - @culvercitypd on Instagram

On September 6, 2020, a fire broke out near the Cogswell Dam and West Fork Day Use area. The “Bobcat Fire” has burned well over 10,000 acres in the Angeles National Forest. The Australian government has failed to meet important commitments to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous peoples, Human Rights Watch said today in a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Mit ca. 4/5 Jahren bin ich das erste mal aktiv mit Rassismus in Kontakt gekommen. Es hat mich damals genauso getroffen wie heute und war genauso unbegreiflich. Doch da ich zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht so viel über diese Welt wusste bin ich davon ausgegangen dass sich dieses Problem irgendwann von alleine löst. Ich hatte/habe so viele Freunde aus allen möglichen Teilen der Welt und konnte mir einfach nicht vorstellen dass wir uns wenn wir mal erwachsen sind Aufgrund unserer Herkunft ernsthaft diskriminieren. Naja, man wird erwachsen... Mittlerweile leben wir in einer Welt in der sowas wie die Geschichte in dem Video gestern, in ein paar Wochen leider schon wieder vergessen wird. Wer denkt das im Jahr 2020 Rassismus kein Thema mehr ist lebt in einer Blase oder ist noch nie ernsthaft damit in Kontakt gekommen. Ich bin grade in einem Alter in dem viele meiner Freunde Kinder haben die bald in das selbe Alter kommen das ich damals hatte und die Vorstellung dass sie in 20/25 Jahren die selbe traurige Erkenntnis haben, weil immer noch Menschen sterben müssen weil Sie anders aussehen, macht mich unfassbar traurig und wütend... A Queensland watch house officer has been suspended following an investigation into the recent death of an Indigenous woman in custody. Aunty Sherry Tilberoo, 49, was found dead in her cell at the Brisbane watch house on September 10. She had been remanded in custody three days earlier and was waiting to be transferred to a correctional facility. Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd said the Ethical Standards Command immediately started an independent investigation. On the basis of interim advice provided by investigators, the QPS has taken decisive action including suspending an assistant watch house officer from duty, pending the outcome of that investigation, he said. This suspension relates to allegations of failure of duty in relation to the performance of regular physical checks on prisoners in the watch house and related record keeping. Assistant Commissioner Codd said advice from the coroner remains that Aunty Sherry Tilberoo died of natural causes. A recent report by Little Sis links fossil fuel corporations and their contribution to police associations. The same companies that drive environmental racism in Black and Brown communities through toxic and climate-changing pollution also fund police power in cities that stretch from Houston and Detroit to New Orleans and Salt Lake City. It was surreal having to watch my little brother graduate from the Northeastern Police Academy via YouTube instead of being able to be there in person, but I felt so proud of @gerard_colpoys today. He has always had an incredibly kind heart, always steps up to help, and is a natural leader because he is a person who does the right thing when no one is looking. A young father who was stabbed to death outside a nightclub was acting as “peacemaker” trying to break up an argument when he was killed , police said today. Zakaria Abukar Sharif-Ali, 26, had stepped in to calm a row outside a nightclub in Shoreditch when he was attacked by two men. The father-of-two collapsed outside the Rolling Stock club in Kingsland Road after the attack shortly before 6.30am on Saturday. He was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery but died two hours after he was admitted. Detectives today issued descriptions of two men they are seeking in connection with the killing as Mr Sharif-Ali’s family described him as a family man who had recently launched a food delivery business.
