⁣A gynecologist performed hysterectomies on detained migrants without their full consent, according to Dawn Wooten, a nurse who filed a whistleblower complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General on Monday.⠀ ⠀ Wooten, who worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, said in her complaint that the number of hysterectomies — invasive operations that remove all or part of the uterus — was a red flag. Almost every woman that went to see the doctor was told they needed to undergo the procedure, she claimed. ⠀ ⠀ Everybodys uterus cannot be that bad, Wooten said in the complaint, calling the doctor the uterus collector.⠀ ⠀ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement does not comment on matters presented to the Office of the Inspector General, according to Lindsay Williams, a spokeswoman.⠀ ⠀ *️⃣⠀ ⠀ The allegations call to mind a history of sterilization laws in the United States dating back to the early 1900s that usually targeted the poor, disabled and women of color.⠀ ⠀ ▪ In 1905, Indiana became the first state to approve a sterilization law making sterilization mandatory for certain individuals in state custody. During the next several decades, more than two-thirds of all states passed similar laws.⠀ ⠀ ▪ In the 1927s Buck v. Bell, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to uphold a states right to forcibly sterilize a person considered feeble-minded.⠀ ⠀ ▪ Between 1920 and 1945, Mexicans and Latinas in prisons, mental institutions and the welfare system in California were disproportionately sterilized. If you live here in the US, you are looking at what happened this week to Jacob Blake and asking yourself - through your outrage, your anger, and your tears -why does this keep happening, and what can I do about it?⁣ I don’t know what your answers are, but I do know that reliable data will help inform your answers.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Here are five data points. Taken together they don’t speak directly to whether the US is racist, or whether the police force in general is racist. All they speak to is a disparity. The US is no different than countries such as Canada, Germany or the UK in terms of its economy, its society, and even its rate of violent crime, and yet its data on deaths - and in particular deaths of Black people - at the hands of the police represent a massive outlier. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Why this disparity? If we can get to the cause we can get to the solution.⁣ On my IGTV, I’ve suggested a solution - namely, do not arm the police. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Only 5% of arrests in the US are for violent crimes. If you arm every single officer, tell them that the streets are dangerous, that the Black community is disproportionately dangerous, and that discharging your firearm carries with it very few administrative or legal burdens for you, then we will get the data in the US that we have.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In contrast, in the UK, where police are not armed - even in large, dangerous cities where many of the criminals are- the number of deaths at the hands of the police average between 1-2 per year. ⁣The US is a land of laws. The power of the law should be enough to ensure that the police can make the 95% of arrests which involve no violence. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If you have a different interpretation of these data, or a different idea of what to do next to prevent 2020 from being yet another police-death-outlier year for the US, then please share it.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What we are doing isn’t working. From Interim Police Chief Glen Webb: The other night, a 10 year old girl had to go to the hospital. She was really afraid of needles and did not want her blood drawn. One of our officers was there and explained that it wouldn’t hurt, employing the tried-and-true method of a pinky promise: if he could prove it didnt hurt, then she would let the nurse draw her blood. Making good on his pinky promise, the officer had the nurse draw a vial of his own blood, putting the child at ease so the nurse could do the necessary medical work. Due to Covid, students’ A-Level and GCSE results this year will be based on their past performance and teachers’ predictions, but also “statistically adjusted” based on their school’s past results. This has resulted in 37% of A-level students having their results downgraded compared to their predicted grades. Unsurprisingly, working-class students were disproportionately impacted. In Scotland public pressure forced the authorities to abandon this model and accept teachers predictions. We need to take action to force them to do the same here! This Hispanic Heritage Month, LMSA is highlighting some of our student members. Meet Olga Chamberlain, a MD/PhD candidate at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and @lmsa_southeast Co-Director. What inspired you to go into medicine? Growing up, I often served as a translator for my family members, which exposed me at a young age to the realities of healthcare. I experienced, through them, how language plays an important role in a patient’s interpretation of medicine and how language barriers may limit people from actively participating in their medical treatment. At 14, I committed myself to what I know now to be the pursuit of a career in medicine in order to provide proactive measures for Spanish speakers to act as their own lifeline to care rather than depending on interpreters. Why did you join LMSA? LMSA initially stood out to me because it seemed like an organization where I could focus on my community and surround myself around future physicians with similar backgrounds. However, I continued my involvement in LMSA because of the large network of mentors and opportunity it offered. How do you hope to influence the health professions for the future? The warmth of a Latinx/Hispanic background quickly reveals itself, allowing it to be a source of comfort for both the care taker and patient. I plan to channel this essential part of my identity to build strong, genuine connections with my patients. Lastly, I hope to always address, acknowledge and educate about the the social and systemic elements that are deeply intertwined with health for all patients. My ultimate hope for my future in medicine is to simply do as much good for as many as I can. What advice do you have for other students looking to pursue careers in the health professions? Get yourself a mentor! Mentorship and networking are just as essential in medicine as they are in any other field. Also, constantly remind yourself that you are capable and deserving. To anyone who does not support these protests around the county and the world, BLACK LIVES MATTER, you can ignore this no longer, and this is what actually happens. These are the brave protestors who were peacefully protesting in the streets of la only to be met with violence by the police. On our knees, hands up, chanting “hands up, don’t shoot”, we were able to drive them away because we were peacefully protesting. But that’s not the case all the time, so many videos of the police brutally attacking, shooting, tear gassing peaceful protestors. It’s absolutely insane, it’s a systemic problem that will never be addressed unless this happens. New data released by the Chicago Police Department from the weekend following the death of George Floyd shows that just 20% of arrests during the first few days of unrest were for looting-related crimes, contradicting earlier claims by CPD that looting made up the majority of arrests that weekend. On September 7th, we met with Suzanne Goldberg, Ixchel Rosal, and Flores Forbes, all 3 involved in the Student Life and Community Affairs divisions. ILLEGAL WEAPONS DISCOVERED AFTER PURSUIT Here is another example of the dangers our officers face each day when protecting our neighborhoods from people who are intent on causing harm. Over the weekend on Sunday, September, 27, 2020 right before 7:30 a.m., a patrol officer attempted to stop a silver Honda Accord for vehicle code violations at California Avenue and Kingsbury Street, but the driver failed to pull over and yield. The driver led the officer on a short pursuit until he collided into a pole at Van Buren Boulevard and Wells Avenue. He then fled on foot through an apartment complex for a couple hundred yards but the officer was able to catch up and safely take the driver into custody. When officers searched the Honda, they located a loaded AR-15 short-barreled rifle, a 20-gauge shotgun, loaded high-capacity magazines and additional ammunition, a flash bang grenade, military-style ballistic vest, and full facemasks. David Castillo Jr., 18-years-old of Riverside, was arrested and taken to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking. He was later booked into jail for felonies that included several weapons violations and evading police, along with resisting arrest. A bail enhancement was obtained and he is currently being held on $200,000 bail. We are still looking into what this 18-year-old was doing with these illegal weapons and equipment. But whatever his criminal intentions were, we are fortunate our patrol officer was at the right place and time to take another dangerous person off the streets. - @riversidepolicedepartment on Instagram

While anti-Asian bias had been in steady decline for over a decade, the trend reversed in days after a significant uptick in discriminatory coronavirus speech. Tonight, we honor the service of Officer Lauren Fulmer. Officer Fulmer served the Oklahoma State Police Department for three years and had left the department to finish her final year of nursing school, she died by suicide on July 1, 2020. Lauren was born June 2, 1993 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas and was a 2011 graduate of South Barber High School. She enjoyed the company of her family, friends and connecting with children; she enjoyed hiking and running, oftentimes with her much loved dog Kingsley, she was passionate about physical fitness and inspired others on their fitness journeys with personal training. Lauren was a graduate of Cleet academy and was also about to enter her last year of college to acquire her nursing degree. Lauren is survived by her parents, Cara and Mark Smith; siblings, Ashley Lee, Clinton (Angi) Brogan, Ky Smith, Kenneth (Sheila) Brogan, Morgan (Aaron) McDonald, Samantha (Justin) Siler, Nicole (Cody) Briggs; grandparents, Robert Brogan, Beth and Wes Smith; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; special friends, Heather and Shawn Millermon and their two children, as well as so many other friends. Lynchburg PD Weekend surprise! Earlier this summer, Officer Mike Johnson and Officer Austin Rowland were handling a late night call for service when a resident started choking and turning blue. Officer Rowland jumped into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver and saving her life. She recently reached back out to Officer Johnson because she and her daughters wanted to do something special and thank the officer who saved her life. Based on what we do know — which I’ve culled from my own reporting, reporting from the New York Times and the Louisville Courier-Journal, as well as from conversations with the lawyers for Taylor’s family — the decision to charge Detective Brett Hankison with wanton endangerment was probably correct, as was the decision not to charge the other officers involved in the shooting. If ballistics had conclusively shown that one of the bullets from Hankison’s gun killed Taylor, he could be charged with reckless homicide, but according to Cameron, the bullets that struck Taylor could not be matched to Hankison’s gun. There’s the problem that the police who conducted the raid were relying on a warrant procured by another officer, which was then signed by a judge. There were many flaws and abrogations in that process, but it would be unfair and not legal to hold them accountable for any of that. But “not illegal” should not mean “immune from criticism.” Part of the problem was Cameron himself, who was selective in what information he released to the point of misleading the public about key facts in the case. (This raises real questions about whether the grand jury was also misled. That’s why an attorney for Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker, who fired at the police during the raid, is demanding that Cameron release the evidence that was presented to the grand jury.) Furthermore, Taylor’s death was not, as Cameron suggested, simply a tragedy for which no one is to blame. The police work in this case was sloppy, and the warrant service was reckless. Taylor is dead because of a cascade of errors, bad judgment and dereliction of duty. And it’s important that the record on this be clear. The man on the right is Sergeant Nathan from Sunshine Police Station in Victoria. Sergeant Nathan has been trying to help Michael to get housing through various organisations, however it has proven to be a long & hard process due to Michael having 3 dogs. While Sergeant Nathan is still trying to assist Michael, he thought it would be a great idea to give him a Good Box! He chose a Winter Box due to the cold winter in Victoria ❄️ We will be supplying more boxes to Sunshine Police Station to give to those experiencing homelessness in the area. Official CSUF ALUMNA! I was going to wait until I took actual graduation pictures but that may not be until next year lol so until then I will post my degree. I did it! I have to give credit to my great grandma who stuck by my side through thick and thin and made it possible to balance raising a child as a single mother while finishing school. It saddens me that she is not here today to physically see the degree, but I feel better knowing that her protection and guidance is still there as she is now my guardian angel. I entered in 2016 as a young and naive 18 year old with a undeclared major, I exited in 2020 as a 22 year old single mother with a story to tell of the good and bad and how I overcame so much. I am definitely still learning and growing in this crazy thing we call life, but now it’s with my 2 year old sidekick on my hip and I wouldn’t change a thing. It definitely feels odd to not have to stress over assignments being due on top of work the next morning and running behind a toddler. I heard that it’s a normal feeling you get after graduating so apparently it’s supposed to go away at some point 😂. I often feel like I’m not doing enough and I have to remind myself of what I have accomplished in the span of 4 years. On top of that I was blessed with a way better job months prior to graduating. In conclusion, 2020 has definitely been bittersweet, and the success doesn’t stop here✨❤️. Burnet County Precinct 4 Constable Missy Bindseil is an elected law enforcement officer for south and southeast Burnet County, covering parts of Marble Falls and Spicewood. She also works for the Justice of the Peace Court in her precinct, acting as bailiff and serving warrants, restraining orders, and other papers.As a constable, she has the same duties as a city officer or county deputy; however, she answers to the voters, making community connections a central aspect of the job. Bindseil began her career in the justice system in 1992 in Temple TX working as a parole officer and later became a police officer. She moved to Burnet County in 2008, where she began work in the sheriff’s office as a deputy and dispatcher. She was appointed constable in December 2016 and elected to the position in 2018. She is unopposed in the November 3 general election for her first full four-year term. Heres a some things she wants people to know.. WE ARE LAW ENFORCEMENT, not lawmaker. Today I traded my handcuffs in for a stethoscope. After 12 and a half years of working for the Wichita County Sheriffs Office I am finally saying good bye. I have been an Officer,Corporal and a Sergeant. I have laughed and I have cried. I have worked with some amazing people and dealt with some difficult individuals. I have experienced life in ways others may never see. I have been injured, worked during protests, riots and Covid-19. I can honestly say I have learned so much throughout the years but most importantly I have learned so much more about myself. I have grown and become a woman I never thought Id see. A year ago I never thought Id be where Im at today but I am proud of just how far Ive come. The Raleigh Police Department is aware of the video circulating on social media involving a traffic stop during the January 14 arrest of Braily Andres Batista-Concepcion. On January 14, 2020 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Raleigh Police Department officers responded to a report of a hit and run in the 3500 block of Wake Forest Road. Before officers arrived on the scene the suspect vehicle fled the area and was involved in a second hit and run in a parking lot at St. Albans Drive and Wake Forest Road. While fleeing the scene of the second collision the vehicle struck a pole at 4320 Wingate Drive. A short time later, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description from the three earlier hit and run incidents driving erratically on Navaho Drive. The officer initiated a traffic stop and observed that the driver appeared to be impaired while transporting three passengers. When Mr. Batista-Concepcion ignored repeated commands to place his hands on the wheel, the officer ordered him to get out of the vehicle. Mr. Batista-Concepcion failed to follow the officer’s commands and officers used force to remove him from the vehicle. Braily Andres Batista-Concepcion was subsequently charged with DWI, three counts of Hit and Run, two counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, Simple Possession of Marijuana, and Resist, Delay and Obstruct. As is the case with all uses of force, the Raleigh Police Department is reviewing this matter. If anyone has additional information about this incident or witnessed any other hit and runs involving this vehicle, they are encouraged to call 911. The officers involved were equipped with body worn cameras and their patrol vehicles captured dash camera video of the arrest, which can be viewed on the Raleigh Police Department’s YouTube channel. - @raleighpolicedept on Instagram

The sweep is part of a strategic plan launched by the MSP Second District to prioritize locating at-risk youth and missing children, MSP wrote in a Twitter post Wednesday. Troops tracked down background names, photos and last known locations to locate the youth. The recover cases included a 9-year-old runaway from foster care, as well as two teen girls who may have been victims of sex trafficking. CARJACKING SUSPECT ARRESTED On 08/31/20, at approximately 4:30 PM, a carjacking occurred in the 7-11 parking lot, located at 5495 Sepulveda Blvd. The 82 year old victim was seated in his vehicle when the suspect approached him on foot and began to physically assault him. After attacking the victim, the suspect forcibly removed the victim from the vehicle, entered the driver seat and drove away in an unknown direction. The elderly victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for serious injuries to his head and remained hospitalized for over a week. Since the violent attack, the victim has been released from the hospital. Culver City Detectives conducted follow-up investigations and through forensic evidence and video surveillance identified 20-year old Jonathan Rosas as the suspect. On September 22nd, Detectives located Rosas in the city of Inglewood, where he was arrested for carjacking. The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the following criminal charges were filed on Rosas: PC 215 (Carjacking) and PC 368 (B) (1) (Elder Abuse). - @culvercitypd on Instagram

The same companies that drive environmental racism in Black and Brown communities through toxic and climate-changing pollution also fund police power in cities that stretch from Houston and Detroit to New Orleans and Salt Lake City.
