Taking this morning to acknowledge @washingtonpost journalist Jaclyn Peiser and the editorial team who published this headline—and story— about the police officers who shot Jacob Blake in the back 7 times using active voice. If you’ve been following my posts, watched my lectures about language on IG Live, or attended a Language Barrier Lecture, listened to the “We’re Having A Moment” podcast with @baratunde, or attended @jetsetterproblems’ @hommetheseries event, you know how much I emphasize the language of accountability through writers and journalists’ use of active voice in their writing. By active voice I mean the grammatical arrangement of subject (who does the)—verb—(to the) object. This arrangement acknowledges that the subject of the sentence, the one doing the verb to the object, is held accountable for their power, agency and—in the context of sentence structure—actions. While many media platforms use the passive voice in their headlines (ex. A video shows a Black man is shot multiple times as he enters his car by Wisconsin police officers.)—making the object (Blake) the subject of the sentence, and the police officers who shot him the object, Peiser (and the editorial team) used the active voice to hold the proper subject accountable. As of my writing this, I don’t have the name of the particular officer who shot Blake, nor does Peiser name him so I can’t go the full length of accountability where I can make the officers’ name the hashtag—and his photo pervades the internet as much as Jacob Blake’s name and photos will—but Peiser’s use of active voice is a necessary shift in the power structure to specify and, literally, hold the subject of action accountable. I’ve also included the statement and tweets from Wisconsin governor, Tony Evers, to further illustrate the stark difference between Peiser’s use of active voice and his use of passive. Notice that in both his tweets and statement Evers places law enforcement in the object’s place. The irony of this juxtaposition is a journalist, who has no legal power to hold the subject accountable, does while Evers, who has the legal power to do something doesn’t. The man was already in cuffs so that means he is no longer a threat. But 3 officer decided to put all their weight on a handcuffed man for more than 10min. I can’t breathe he complained several times, everything hurts he complained several times but they ignored him and told the crowd that were pleading to them to stop to get back. The officer standing even said don’t do drug at some point. The deed is done and now the police department have distanced themselves from this officers, which means they will have to get an expensive lawyer to represent them and pay out of pocket. Which means all their savings/401k/house re-mortgage will all go to the Lawsuit trying to stay out of jail or get lesser time. At the end, they will lose everything trying to prove something to people that don’t matter. This is my dad. 🤗 My dad worked for the Orange County Sheriff’s department for 32 years. He poured his heart and soul into that job and had to put a lot of birthday parties and Christmas celebrations on hold because of he had to work. Growing up, my mom, brother, and myself never got hurt or offended that we had to wait to celebrate because we knew that daddy was working to keep the world safe. The message included a picture of Raleigh police in riot gear boarding a GoRaleigh bus bound for Downtown. Throughout the next couple days, during the height of the Downtown protests following the killing of George Flloyd by a Minneapolis police officer, reporters and friends shared similar photos on social media. Nathan, Vice-Chair of the Raleigh Transit Authority (RTA), brought the matter to the attention of the RTA Chair Tolulope Omokaiye and fellow RTA member Brian L Burnett. Together, they drafted a letter seeking answers to why GoRaleigh buses were used to transport police into a potentially dangerous situation and whether drivers — a workforce that is overwhelmingly African-American — were being protected to the same degree as officers in riot gear. If you say to me, well, I dont see colour it doesnt affect me or my family I dont want to get involved I can see it is wrong but Im not outraged like you I dont want to rock the boat because that is not culturally how we do things not that interested in how the history of the country I live in is related to racism and racial violence today Heres the thing, these comments and/or your silence are creating distance with your friends and family. Leaders, these thoughts and your silence are creating distance with the people you lead. We, who have experienced injustice for something we cant change (the colour of our skin) are wondering if that was me under that cops knee, would you be that person staying silent and doing nothing to help me do you see me, do you actually care about me as a person? We just want you to say sorry its taken us so long to wake up and see this is real, I will stop being offended and defensive about this and making it political and start to learn, unlearn and hold the space of the uncomfortable until I work this through. This is wrong and Im with you, I will find a way to play my part to dismantle it in my world, in my every day life & speak up. Again its not enough to be non-racist. Be anti-racist. No one is attacking your moral code! If you are a leader and someone has come to you with cases of racism in your organisation and you have done nothing to stand up for them, you are also complicit. Your inaction is producing racist outcomes. It hurts. Count the cost of change for a better tomorrow. You can make a difference by speaking truth in love even if your voice quivers. This is FOR unity. We have to be in this together. Discrimination of any kind is wrong. Hope we can all agree on that. So sad that people cannot speak their truth because of fear of retaliation from their leaders. This is a real problem I see. Lack of trust, lack of processes/policies and protection for vulnerable people, unconscious biases, paired with lack of accountability and abuse of power = systemic Give yourselves the permission to change your mind. Mit ca. 4/5 Jahren bin ich das erste mal aktiv mit Rassismus in Kontakt gekommen. Es hat mich damals genauso getroffen wie heute und war genauso unbegreiflich. Doch da ich zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht so viel über diese Welt wusste bin ich davon ausgegangen dass sich dieses Problem irgendwann von alleine löst. Ich hatte/habe so viele Freunde aus allen möglichen Teilen der Welt und konnte mir einfach nicht vorstellen dass wir uns wenn wir mal erwachsen sind Aufgrund unserer Herkunft ernsthaft diskriminieren. Naja, man wird erwachsen... Mittlerweile leben wir in einer Welt in der sowas wie die Geschichte in dem Video gestern, in ein paar Wochen leider schon wieder vergessen wird. Wer denkt das im Jahr 2020 Rassismus kein Thema mehr ist lebt in einer Blase oder ist noch nie ernsthaft damit in Kontakt gekommen. Ich bin grade in einem Alter in dem viele meiner Freunde Kinder haben die bald in das selbe Alter kommen das ich damals hatte und die Vorstellung dass sie in 20/25 Jahren die selbe traurige Erkenntnis haben, weil immer noch Menschen sterben müssen weil Sie anders aussehen, macht mich unfassbar traurig und wütend... Lasst uns weiter dagegen ankämpfen dass diese Vorstellung nicht zur Realität wird. Egal wie lang es dauert und wie schmerzhaft es wird. Wir sind alle gleich. - @stzy24 on Instagram
