📍National park Dwingelderveld Today I felt like posting a sheep, because we are all sheep’s right? 😝 I found this beauty in national park Dwingelderveld in the Dutch province Drenthe. 𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝟷𝟶𝟶 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴? This national park is quite special, because its the largest continuous wet heathland area in Western Europe. To keep this heather in top condition there are two sheep flocks with their own shepherd. And of course they have a sheepfold. What a lamb season!!! If you combine my years of showing lambs with my older boys and now my 3 younger kiddos, we have 20ish years of lamb shows. This year will certainly be remembered!!!! Cloe received our family’s 1st Star Choice!!!!! And Ryder and Gerrett both placed 3rd in their classes. Both 1 spot away from Star Choice. This is one PROUD Mom. These kiddos have been walking their lambs in the early mornings since June. They weigh their feed, scrub their water buckets and clean the lambs pens and never complain. The most horrible time of the year is upon us, once again. While my feed is mostly cute lambs and my pet sheep, there is another side of farming, something I talk less about (mostly because I find it difficult). The slaughter season has begun. Meat is the only real source of income for sheep farmers here, so this morning we sent lambs away. It never gets easy. I know they’ve had a good life, roaming free in the highlands with their mothers, but I still feel like we betray them. We work so hard during lambing to make sure they’re okay, try to give them the best life we can, then we send them to be slaughtered. I love working with sheep and being on the farm the rest of the year, but this is why I can’t see myself becoming a sheep farmer when I grow up. If you eat meat, this is something that concerns you. If you eat meat, you need to be aware of that it used to be a living, feeling animal that was slaughtered so you could eat it. None of that “it gave it’s life so you could eat” bullshit, it was killed, they don’t want to die, they don’t get to choose. If you eat meat, at least make sure to eat animals that had a good life while they were alive. Before you ask, Lilli isn’t going anywhere. He’s our friend and gets the same royal treatment as any other pet sheep ❤️ But the sad reality is, his mother being a bitch to him saved his life as it made us take him in, so he became a pet. - @farmlifeiceland on Instagram

Bought some lovely beastie boys yesterday 😍😍🐏🐏🐏🐏 Three breeds for three purposes. The Texel far right white head is to go with the main flock. He is a terminal sire for producing shapey fat lambs for the market. The two centre black heads are Suffolk’s, one of my favourite breeds. Needed three of these really but the price was too stee in the others, so will have to get another this next week. They will be crossed with the broken mouth flock of which we have 50 to keep, those will produce fat lambs and lovely Suffolk/mule ewe lambs which can be sold in for breeding. The rest will go in lamb or as couples, very grass dependent! Finally Mr Monsterous Blue-faced Leicester will be bred to our other purchase swipe left ⬅️⬅️ the Beulah speckle ewes you make the Welsh Mule. The last picture this year of the girls with their wool on.......shearing is done and they are free of their winter coats..... 🐑 We have just returned from a quick trip across the Central West of NSW........ and what struck me most was the massive change in this landscape since the drought and subsequent bush fires of 2019. Our climate, vegetation and ecology across this vast land, Australia is fragile, but........ in the same breath this ancient land never fails to astonish me with its capacity for rebirth and renewal. 🐑 Stunning bright yellow Canola fields in full flower give way to emerald green pastures with bouncing lambs. NSW is alive in all its abundant fertile spring glory. 🐑 It reminds us that on our farm we need to keep trees, remain understocked and under grazed. Cella⠀ This is a dog who loved her job. She didnt quite imprint on our sheep the way we hoped, rather she imprinted on kids and the people of @LiveEarthFarm. She always turned up when anyone came to visit, with her tail helicoptering. She liked to take kids for walks by gently grabbing their hands with her mouth and marching off. She liked to roll in burr clover, foxtails and poison oak, so you never knew quite what that amazing white coat might hold. She protected us, circling our campouts, barking off any critter who dared come near. She was a good dog.⠀ ⠀ We love you Cella. Okey doke, that was pretty challenging.....300ml in 2 days.....we havent had a lambing like this in many years. 🐑 As of tonight, though I think we are through the worst of it. In fact later this week, it looks like some sun.....bring on Spring!! 🐑 Tomorrow, we will start milking. A new season! I always love this time, watching to see how each ewe begins her season. Its a reflection of how she will continue. 🐑 We are in the process of making some big changes to our blue maturation room which will significantly improve the rinds of our cheese. Our Jamberoo Mountain Blue was the first of our cheeses to win a gold medal, in our very first year of production. We feel very fondly towards this beautiful cheese and love making it. Kevin is absolutely delighted to announce the birth of her twins!.......The baby girls came into the world safely and are of good, healthy size. Wir dürfen euch den nächsten, entzückenden Passagier der Arche vorstellen: Das Waldschaf wurde 2009 als alte Rasse in die Arche aufgenommen - seither wächst und gedeiht es wieder. Meist in kleinen Beständen gehalten, diente der Nachfahre des Torfschafes einst vor allem der Selbstversorgung mit Wolle, Fellen und Fleisch. Mit der rasanten Entwicklung der Textilindustrie zahlte sich die Haltung von Waldschafen jedoch nicht mehr aus. Die Folge: Der Bestand ging drastisch zurück – Mitte der 1980er Jahre konnten nur noch wenige Restbestände verzeichnet werden. Dies hatte massive Auswirkungen auf die genetische Vielfalt der Waldschafpopulation, sodass der Rasse das Aussterben drohte. Mittlerweile ist das Waldschaf allerdings wieder in ganz Österreich verbreitet. Die Hauptzuchtgebiete liegen im ursprünglichen Verbreitungsgebiet, dem Mühl- und Waldviertel. Sogar ein eigenes Gen-Erhaltungsprojekt wurde ins Leben gerufen. Diese Entwicklungen sind nicht zuletzt Hans Kjäer zu verdanken, der sich dem Erhalt der alten, vom Aussterben bedrohten Rasse verschrieben hat: „Ein wichtiger Meilenstein war dabei der Aufbau eines internationalen Abstammungsbuches in Österreich, in dem die österreichischen Herdentiere mittlerweile zur Gänze registriert sind.“ Was den Charakter des Waldschafes auszeichnet? Es ist äußerst robust, genügsam und wetterhart. Animal rights activists have successful caused the cancellation of an Easter sheep racing “Grand National” after receiving almost 50,000 signatures on an online petition. . The race, which has been an annual event for over 30 years, had a flock of sheep with dummy jockeys tied to their backs run a course, jumping over obstacles, to reach treats at the end. . Farm owner Will Dorrell, 27, claimed there had been threats of violence without providing any evidence: “It’s a real shame but I’ve got to think about our safety. . “We’ve been branded ‘scum’, ‘vile’, ‘evil’ and ‘butchers’ and had threats of physical violence. . “Some have suggested coming down with bolt cutters and setting the sheep free and some have threatened violence towards the animals, which is ironic considering they promote animal welfare.” . There are not any whips or abuse used upon the sheep during the race, only treats and the end of the course, but a spokesman for The Vegan Society stated that the sheep at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, near Telford, Shropshire in the UK, were being exploited. Breed of the Week Oxford Down The Oxford Down has been successfully used throughout Northern Europe and is a generally hardy breed capable of surviving in most conditions. The breed is easily bucket trained and won’t jump fences. The development of the Oxford Down began in the 1830s from crossbreeding Southdown and Hampshire Down ewes with Cotswold rams. Many of the early flocks were based around Witney hence the name Oxford Down and in 1889 the Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association and the first flock book published. The breed became immensely popular and was widely exported throughout Europe and North America. In the latter half of the 20th century the breed’s popularity declined as farmers focused on producing smaller joints. The Oxford Down is a breed capable of producing fast growing, well conformed lambs from most ewe breeds. Ever wondered what our angora goats get up to? Our goats live a happy, carefree life on our farm, which is situated just outside of Greyton. The kids stay with their moms for several months and are naturally weaned off their moms when they’re able to forage on their own. We breed angora goats for their hair and not for their meat, so their health and wellbeing is of utmost importance. Our goats are only shorn twice a year, and the whole process lasts around 15 minutes. Does shearing hurt the goats? No, it’s actually just like having a haircut or taking your dog to the doggy parlour. Shearing is a necessary farming husbandry, because without a good haircut their hair would become extremely matted and uncomfortable.
