- I made some curious friends today when out walking...
Breed of the Week Oxford Down The Oxford Down has been successfully used throughout Northern Europe and is a generally hardy breed capable of surviving in most conditions. The breed is easily bucket trained and won’t jump fences. The development of the Oxford Down began in the 1830s from crossbreeding Southdown and Hampshire Down ewes with Cotswold rams. Many of the early flocks were based around Witney hence the name Oxford Down and in 1889 the Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association and the first flock book published. The breed became immensely popular and was widely exported throughout Europe and North America. In the latter half of the 20th century the breed’s popularity declined as farmers focused on producing smaller joints. The Oxford Down is a breed capable of producing fast growing, well conformed lambs from most ewe breeds. I cant tell you how many times I found her peacefully munching on hay with the cows and horses who were easily 4 times her size. She lived a life most sheep only dream of—a warm barn, a family that loved her, and special care that helped her thrive in her golden years. One of the greatest inequities of loving other species with your whole heart is that you will inevitably have to say goodbye long before you are ready. We are comforted by the thought that sanctuary provided her with a long, beautiful life—but it doesnt make goodbye any easier. We will miss her terribly, her beautiful hellos that made you feel like the most loved person in the world, her kindness, and most of all her friendship. Ever wondered what our angora goats get up to? Our goats live a happy, carefree life on our farm, which is situated just outside of Greyton. The kids stay with their moms for several months and are naturally weaned off their moms when they’re able to forage on their own. We breed angora goats for their hair and not for their meat, so their health and wellbeing is of utmost importance. Our goats are only shorn twice a year, and the whole process lasts around 15 minutes. Does shearing hurt the goats? No, it’s actually just like having a haircut or taking your dog to the doggy parlour. Shearing is a necessary farming husbandry, because without a good haircut their hair would become extremely matted and uncomfortable. Réttir ís the annual sheep roundup in Iceland, when the sheep are brought down from the Highlands, and sorted to go back into each individual family farm. It’s a lot of work and these folks (and dogs) are pros!! @evamariaglimmer’s lovely family is letting a bunch of city slickers “help” them this weekend.
