This month in Sennheiser history – September 1968: We revolutionized the audio world with the first-ever open-backed headphones, the #HD414. For the first time ever, ears could hear in a way that they are accustomed to: open and free in space. The sound can travel to the ear drum more naturally and clearly than in closed models. Not only was the HD 414 exciting for its advances in sound technology, but was the first headphone to feature bright colored foam ear pads (blue, red, green, orange and yellow). The first 10 years of production, the headphones had a grey headband with colored ear pads but a few years later, we changed the design for a black headband and the famous yellow ear pads. Its no surprise the HD 414 triggered an absolute boom in headphones sales. Even today, the HD 414, which has long since gained cult status, is still the bestselling headphones in the world, selling more than 10 million units to date. The open-back principle has also become a staple in the development of high-end headphones. Fun fact: prior to launch, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser asked our sales team for a forecast. They were not totally convinced of the headphone, so they calculated 500 pieces per year. That didnt dissuade Professor Sennheiser who decided to produce 5,000 pieces as he truly believed in the HD 414. He was right. In the end we sold 50,000 units in one year. Stalker (1979) Andrie Tarkovskys fifth feature and the last one he made in Soviet Union. “Stalker” is about its characters (and its viewers) succumbing to the ambiguity and abstruseness of its drawn out moments, to accept that ambiguity, and to construct their own meaningful relationships with the world. (“Ambiguity is richness,” Borges wrote.) Indeed, it is a film where human consciousness and attitudes shape physical reality — or at least the shifting landscapes and expanding, contracting accordion temporality of The Zone — itself. In an interview on the MK2 DVD, the production designer, Rashit Safiullin, recalled that Tarkovsky spent a year shooting a version of the outdoor scenes of Stalker. However, when the crew returned to Moscow, they found that all of the film had been improperly developed and their footage was unusable. Relations between Tarkovsky and Stalkers first cinematographer, Georgy Rerberg, had deteriorated. After seeing the poorly developed material, Tarkovsky fired Rerberg. After the loss of the film stock, the Soviet film boards wanted to shut the film down, but Tarkovsky came up with a solution: he asked to be allowed to make a two-part film, which meant additional deadlines and more funds. Tarkovsky ended up reshooting almost all of the film with a new cinematographer, Alexander Knyazhinsky. Vangelis’ score for Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 sci-fi film Blade Runner is considered an influential work in the history of electronic music. It was nominated in 1983 for a BAFTA and Golden Globe as best original score. Vangelis recorded, mixed and produced the score for Blade Runner in his London recording space Nemo Studios in 1982 (above, a photo of Vangelis at a venue in 1976). Here’s an excerpt from Nemo Studios on the recording process: [The long notes in the films opening credits were created on Vangelis Yamaha CS-80 synthesiser, an instrument that featured many performance controls, including a ribbon controller that gave Vangelis the flexibility apply a pitch bend to his notes. It also had polyphonic aftertouch, which gave Vangelis control over each notes inflection and modulation by varying the amount of pressure on each key pressed on the instrument. Besides the Yamaha CS-80, two other prominent instruments heard throughout Blade Runner are a Roland VP-330 VocoderPlus synthesiser, for the string section, and a Fender Rhodes, for the nostalgic-sounding electric piano. Other instruments included a Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 synthesiser, used for producing low drones and effects, E-Mus Emulator keyboard, put to use as a percussive sampler and a sound library, and Yamaha GS-1 for occasional percussion effects. Vangelis created the enormous spatial distance of the score by running his instruments through a Lexicon 224 digital reverberation sound processor. He used it by applying depths and spaces to his synthesisers and percussion, creating lush spaces to complement the films vast landscapes. For compositions that incorporated the occasional use of pulsating sequencer work, Vangelis had a set-up consisting of several Roland synthesisers and sequencers. This allowed him, during his performance, to adjust, transpose and edit the sequence as he played along.
