The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (@UAMShealth) hosts a free Move for PD class for people with #Parkinsons. The one-hour classes are held twice a week and incorporate 30 minutes of PWR!Moves® movements to aide in mobility, along with 30 minutes of high-intensity interval training. ⠀ ⠀ Susan, 72, has been living with Parkinson’s for almost seven years. She is a #hospice physician who continues to work part time, so she knows the benefit of regular exercise for everyone. She was already exercising by playing #pickleball several times a week when she started attending the Parkinson’s Wellness Recover (PWR!) Moves® classes at the UAMS Donald W. Reynold’s Institute on Aging Ottenheimer Therapy and Fitness Center in summer 2019. “The exercises in the Parkinsons program were different,” Susan said. “They were things that really were specific to #ParkinsonsDisease. For me, that was mostly balance. #Balance has been something really important for me to work on.”⠀ ⠀ Susan enjoys the social aspect of the classes, which are her main source of interaction with other people with Parkinson’s. She also likes that the instructor and #physicaltherapist provide the rationale behind what the #exercises target and why they work. “I think exercising, now with the help of the PWR! Moves classes, has really helped slow the progression of my disease.”⠀ ⠀ UAMS hopes stories like Susan’s #motivate others with Parkinson’s to join the program. Plans are underway to study the impacts of this #exercise program on individuals with Parkinson’s disease, specifically, how exercise affects physical and cognitive performance. 𝗘𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗦: Most exercises include two phases, yet most of us only focus on one of them. The 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 of an exercise is defined as the portion where your muscle is shortening. This is usually the phase where youre working 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 gravity or some pulley system. Most people work hard through this motion, then relax and whip back to the starting position. The 𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 of an exercise is defined as the portion where your muscle is lengthening. This is usually the phase where youre working to 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 gravity or a pulley system in a 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 fashion. Most people breeze through this phase, when a lot of stress from your exercise is concentrated into this phase - more stress translates to more adaptation via increased strength, endurance, or hypertrophy. You can modify your workouts very easily by focusing on the eccentric portion of your exercise. An easy and time-tested method is 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 during your eccentric phase - this may seem easy at first, but youll quickly notice that you need to reduce your resistance to maintain the same repetition range. Since this method increases the frequency of micro muscle tears, you might notice more delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after your workout, so maybe just 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 and branch out from there. @czechmantriatlon: 8th place, 4:33. Final race of Czech Cup brought extreme combination of cold temperatures, heavy rain and strong wind. Stats: 760 registered (sold out), 480 started, 351 finished. I still felt a bit weak after Ultra Czech 515 and decided to dress up for a bike. I rode the whole 90k in my @blueseventy Helix wetsuit, put thermal socks into my bike shoes and cover it with @raceviz_czsk overshoes. Under my helmet I had thermal cap and covered my @brynjeofnorway gloves with another pair of latex gloves. What a great decision! I came to T2 virtually steaming, while everyone else was freezing:-).
