That morning we got to swim/surf with these two ancient time capsules They deserve all the respect we humans can offer them! We can all show our respect for these creatures by simply taking responsibility for our own actions and decisions! Everyday things like... * Not drinking out of plastic water bottles * Reading the labels on nasty cleaning products that all end up in the ocean * Using reusable bags for fresh fruit and veg * Changing from plastic to glass for food storage * Picking up rubbish on the beach instead of walking past it! * Educating ourselves on animal agriculture so we can make a informed decision on what to support based on the waste that ends up in the oceans! * Try and shop at bulk food stores to avoid all the single use plastic All these things don’t take any extra time but make a massive difference for the only home these whales have! It’s up to us to tip the scales ⚖️ 🐋 - @jayden.stibbard on Instagram

This shot of a dolphin and her newborn calf racing towards Small Skellig was taken 4 years ago by my then 13 year old niece, Riona. And today is Riona’s 17th birthday. Ive taken thousands of pictures and Im still dreaming of capturing a moment this good. This is the photo thats on my phones lock screen. Riona took it on a little Samung camera phone and I dont know what divinely-inspired timing was at play but I didnt even have to straighten the horizon line of the original photo. Anyone who’s ever taken a picture from a moving boat knows that it’s virtually impossible to get a level shot. Can we give her a like to encourage her to keep taking awesome photos? I am celebrating the conservation victory in Russia with this Russian killer whale that checked our boat out in the waters off Kamchatka Peninsula. The marine mammal eating killer whales has been added to the Red List which means that it will now be illegal to capture them for aquaria and zoos. Hopefully this is a road to protection of all types of killer whales in Russian waters also the fish eating types as well as a step towards a global ban of killer whales in aquaria.#kamchatka #conservation #wilderness #orca #killerwhale #powerful #whalejail #oceans @bbcearth - @hannestrager on Instagram

We just posted Encounter #2 on our website. Encounter #2 • 24-Jan • L Pod - Haro Strait This was CWR’s first encounter with the L12s in inshore waters in over a year. Last year’s calf, L124, looked good and has a rather unique looking left saddle. It is open but the lower back part of it is missing. In addition, an L84 right side looking right side saddle and L108 like abrasions on L124’s dorsal will make it one of the easier whales to identify. Unfortunately, L41 was not present for the entire encounter. Given his age and that he looked a little thin in our January 2019 encounter, we fear he may be gone and will consider him missing unless he shows up unexpectedly in an upcoming encounter. hi there hey hello merhaba %CE%B3%CE%B5%CE%B9%CE%B1

. Whale season is in full swing in Costa Rica, and the Humpbacks that visit us from the Antarctic are there. But did you know you can tell the difference between the Southern Hemisphere whales and the Northern hemisphere whales? The southern whales have white undersides and the northern whales have black undersides! Pretty cool right? You are probably familiar with this image of a whale spray on the surface. It’s a common myth that the whale is spraying water from its blowhole. Actually, blowholes are like nostrils. They’re used for expelling air, not water. Then what makes the spray? Some of it can be water resting on the top of the whale’s head when it surfaces. Some is mucus, just like when you blow your nose. But the rest is actually water vapor. The air inside a whale’s lungs is so warm that when it hits the cold air outside, it immediately condenses. - @noaaocean on Instagram

J35 “Tahlequah” gave birth to her baby! This beautiful strong mother captured the world’s attention when she carried her dead baby for 17 days and over 1,000 miles in 2018, so you can imagine how special this birth feels to all of us. Tahlequah is an important part of this story, and we feel we owe it to her to create change for her family. Now we owe it to her baby too! There is a 50/50 chance that orcas survive the first year of their life, so we know this precious life has a lot working against them. But it also has thousands of people around the world fighting to make sure they have a beautiful long healthy life. So let’s keep working together and giving everything we have to make sure that’s the case. And remember, the calls you make and the letters/emails you send make a difference. The actions you take make a difference. A fun trip in a warm summer rain today with 2 white sided dolphins, bald eagles, puffins, gannets, guillemots and murres. We are in a change over right now where the slower capelin feeders are moving out and the faster squid feeders are moving in. Squid feeding is very fast and exciting to watch! It was too rainy for pictures today so here is a shot of white sided dolphins from another of our trips. ‪#whales #whalewatching #trinitynl #bonavista #bonavistapeninsula #ExploreCanada #ExploreNL #fall #dolphins #bestkind #staycation #StayHomeYear2020 @newfoundlandlabrador @discoverygeonl @NLtweets - @seaofwhalesnl on Instagram

I’m going on one month of being without my camera, and it’s starting to get to me... This photo is one of the last I was able to take before sending it off to @nikoncanada. We had two humpbacks going off in the Juan de Fuca Strait while in 5-10ft swells. The swell was so big at some points that we could see the humpbacks rising through them before actually breaching the waters surface. Hopefully something happens with my camera soon, I’ve been missing some incredible opportunities out there. - @karaclindsay on Instagram

For this weeks #WildlifeWednesday we are exploring the frigid waters around Antarctica! Killer whales (Orcinus orca) come in many forms (also called ecotypes) and can be found across the globe. In the North Pacific ocean there are three known ecotypes: Residents, Biggs (formally Transients), and Offshores. Each ecotype has their own unique prey preferences, foraging techniques, dialects, behaviors and social groups. In the waters around Antarctica there are at least five distinct ecotypes: Antarctic Type A, Pack ice Type B (large form), Gerlache Type B (small form), Ross Sea Type C, and Sub-Antarctic Type D. Today we will be investigating the largest of the Antarctic killer whales, Type A. . Type A killer whales can grow to an impressive size with males reaching up to 9 meters and 7.7 meters for females. In the waters around Clayoquot Sound, Biggs killer whales are typically the largest and can reach 8 meters in length. Type A killer whales are found around the entire Antarctic continent, in open water, often in family groups of 10-15 individuals. There is evidence to suggest that they migrate from lower latitudes to Antarctic waters during the austral summer months in pursuit of their preferred prey: Antarctic mike whales. Type A killer whales use sophisticated teamwork between family members to pursue minke whales, often over long distances. Like other ecotypes, they work together in a coordinated effort to bring down their prey and share food amongst members. In addition to preying on minke whales, Type As have been recorded hunting southern elephant seals. A bull elephant seal can weigh up to 4,000kg making them the largest extant marine mammal that is not a cetacean. Analysis of stomach contents of Type A killer whales indicates that 89.7% of their diet is composed of marine mammals, 7.1% squid and 3.2% fish. . Have you ever been to Antarctica? Which ecotype would you like to learn more about? . Big thank you to photographer and polar expedition guide @thelifeof.forman for assistance with this weeks #WildlifeWednesday post! 📸 by @thelifeof.forman . #killerwhales #killerwhale #orca #cetacean #marinemammal #marinebiology #research #education - @simrs_tofino on Instagram

- @faunaendemica on Instagram

There is another birth in J pod! Welcome to the world J58! Among all the heaviness of everything we must stand for for the planet and the people, the southern resident killer whales are showing us all the hope that lies ahead & the beautiful resiliency they have. Photo & words by @talia.goodyear: “Welcome to the world little J58 ❤️ This moment was magical and emotional, to say the least! Congratulations to J41 “Eclipse” on her second calf. Never did I think I would witness the birth of any cetacean, let alone a Southern Resident Killer Whale! This now marks two births in the SRKW population in 20 days. While incredibly exciting, it is important to remember that this does not mean this population is thriving. They continue to be critically endangered and face many challenges, with starvation due to the lack of chinook salmon at the forefront. We must continue to fight for these incredible animals!” #getfishfarmsout #breachthesnakeriverdams #noconsentnopipeline - @coextinctionfilm on Instagram

On Friday night, unbeknownst to us at the time, Rach and I witnessed a once in a lifetime bucket list event - the birth of an Orca. ⁣ ⁣ After getting wind that there were a couple of them in Breaker Bay, we drove down to find 7 of them just 10m from shore. I originally thought we were watching them flush out stingrays and feeding, but later learned what we actually saw unfold.⁣ ⁣ The pregnant mum-to-be rolled on to her side, birthing the calf whilst three others dove down and pushed it up to the surface for it’s first breath. They spent about 20 minutes in the shallows, helping the newborn figure out how to swim and breathe on it’s own. Meanwhile, a massive bull was sweeping back and forth about 60m offshore, guarding the mum, midwives and babies during the whole event before eventually leading them out to sea to swim off into the very typical Wellington sunset. - @geekazoid_nz on Instagram

Orcas and rainbows 🌈💕 . . . Today we were treated to around 16 orca visiting our backyard!!!!💥🤩🍀 (yep! you read that right! 👀 The Crew estimated around 16! 😮 #squadgoals❤️ ) . . . They were spread out over a large area cruising solo, in pairs or small groups. Mostly unknown to us, we did recognise six orca that last visited us back in June this year, and again before that in 2016. . . . Look how big Shadow has grown! What a privilege it is to be able to monitor the growth of individuals in the population of orca in the Bremer Sub-Basin. Our research intern Corinna is currently processing our data collected in our 2020 field season. Here is Bindi’s calf, Shadow, first sighted when she was born in 2017. And here she is again in 2020. We were lucky enough to observe Bindi many times this year, with Shadow following closely behind. Long-term population monitoring through photo-ID is an essential tool for understanding killer whale populations and is vital for the establishment of management policies. I was raised on the east coast and def not on the sea (sup suburbia). For many reasons, I now call the Pacific home. It’s a mix of luck, drive, & privilege that got me here. Some days we spend hours at sea, searching or chumming, and see nothing. Other days, albeit rare, look like this. I’ll be taking a bit of time off from tourism this year but it only makes me more thankful for the experiences I’ve had and that much more stoked for things to come 💦 - @fakewhiteshark on Instagram

Got an up close look at some orca and gray whales with our neighbor friends this weekend! These majestic animals always leave me breathless. The orca pods are critically endangered in Washington State due to lack of salmon, noise pollution, and chemical pollution. Researchers have found orca pods are matriarchal, with some grandmothers living well past 90 years old. Why do orca grandmothers live so long? Young orcas with grandmothers are more likely to stay alive than those without. A calf’s risk of death rises dramatically for two years following the death of its grandmother, who carries knowledge about food resources and navigation paths. These sentient beings deserve to be protected and out of aquariums! 🐋 #blackfish #orca #killerwhale - @jamroub on Instagram

Photo by @mitty // Today, Lofoten in Norway is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. Frigid waters well up from the continental shelf here, carrying nutrients that support the planet’s largest cold water reef, along with massive populations of foundation fish. These attract some of the biggest concentrations of cetaceans in the world (humpbacks, sperm whales, and orcas) which put on incredible feeding displays as they drive herring into bait balls and gorge on the much-needed protein. In the spring of 2019, @sealegacy worked with partners in Norway—including @folkeaksjonen, @friends_earth Norway, Young Friends of the Earth Norway, and Workers Youth League—to support, amplify, and galvanize a movement to permanently protect Lofoten in Vesterålen and Senja in northern Norway from oil development. More than 53,000 SeaLegacy supporters joined together and signed the petition to tell the Norwegian parliament that the world was watching, that they stood with Norwegians in protecting this region for generations to come. On April 6, 2019, after the petition signatures were shared, a solid majority of Norway’s Labour Party voted to protect the Lofoten region from oil development, marking a critical turning point in this movement. Visit the link in our bio to read Cristina’s article and learn more about the astonishing wildlife in Lofoten. #OnlyOneOcean #nature #whales - @onlyone on Instagram

Probably my favourite sight, the moment the surface tension breaks over an orcas head. Each water molecule desperately trying to cling on, finally giving way to up to 6 tonnes of blubbery mass forcing its way through. The precision with which the orcas manipulate this is astounding. In Antarctica, they use this phenomenon to create a pressure wave to dislodge would-be dinner from ice floes. In Argentina, they use it as cover as they sneak up on unsuspecting sea lion pups on the beach. Out here in BC, Ive never seen it used as a means of catching prey (anyone know otherwise?) but Ive seen orcas playing in their own wake from these pressure waves. Sure must be fun. 🌊🌊 • Morning light, silky water. Cant ask for better conditions😊 • Taken at @orcalabbc from land with a 300mm telephoto lens. - @awildsuze on Instagram

In honor of shark week, here’s a rare shot taken on the set of one of the greatest films ever made, a cinematic game changer, Steven Spielberg’s “JAWS”. This rare image, published in Life Magazine back in 1976, was taken during the final day of shooting. As it was originally storyboarded (and shot), the shark would appear in full view attacking the unsuspecting young Alex Kintner while swimming on his raft. The footage of this absolutely nightmarish visual ended up on the cutting room floor. I would love to see the raw 35mm takes shot for this scene surface someday… #JAWS #thesharkisstillworking #bruce #alexkintner #greatwhiteshark #sharkweek #lifemagazine #stevenspeilberg - @johncafiero on Instagram

Because of lockdown, I’m doing a photo project with @capenature over the next few weeks, travelling to several nature reserves in the Western Cape of South Africa. I’ve just returned from three reserves about 500kms east of Cape Town. This region at the bottom of Africa is unlike anything else on the continent. Where’s the savannah? The baobabs? The elephants? That’s what you saw in the Africa brochure, right? Instead there are ancient mountain ranges, huge lakes, estuaries and sandy beaches that seem to go on forever. Tidal pools filled with shellfish. Deep river gorges, lined with 1 000-year-old yellow wood trees. Forests near Knysna are still home to the last surviving elephant (or more, depending on who you talk to - almost all the large terrestrial wild animals were shot out by colonial hunters 250 years ago - the southern Cape was once known as “Serengeti of the south”.) Yet the Indian ocean here is probably richer in wildlife than any savannah. The cliffs along the coast – especially at Robberg Nature Reserve - make it easy to spot whales, dolphins, seals and sharks. Archaeological research by Chris Henshilwood suggests that the southern Cape – not East Africa - was where the first few modern humans thrived about 150 000 years ago. When you travel here, you soon understand why. It’s perfect for humans now, and was probably more so back then. The gentle climate is just right: not too hot, not too cold, an even spread of light rain through the year (all these pics were taken in “winter”!) The easy living, plentiful food and absence of diseases like malaria meant that early modern humans had more free time for socializing, for language and contemplation. The natural beauty of this region maybe even sparked the first poetic and artistic thought in our ancient ancestors (the world’s oldest piece of art – an engraving 70 000 years old - was found at nearby Blombos Cave). The southern Cape was the original landscape of modern humanity, and exploring these nature reserves feels like a pilgrimage back in time. It’s a very different kind of Africa, but as impressive. After going to Robberg, Keurbooms and Goukamma Nature Reserves, I am now an aspiring caveman! - @scottramsay.africa on Instagram

- @paklyanovvictor on Instagram

I shot this at ISO 6400, not an ideal ISO for blowing up prints to fill an entire wall perhaps, but pushing my ISO is what enabled me to capture this image (and I’m still able to print it the size of a standard gallery print). Today’s tip: Don’t be afraid to push your ISO when photographing wildlife. Coming from more of a landscape and portrait background, you learn very early on to never compromise your photo by increasing the ISO over a certain point, really if at all. It is always ideal to have the lowest ISO possible and to keep it at 100. To preserve the photo and keep the ISO low, landscape and portrait photographs will make use of a tripod in order to allow them to slow down their shutter speed to let in more light while maintaining a sharp image. In the case of wildlife photography, it is essential to be flexible with your ISO and push it to maintain a fast enough shutter speed to enable your camera to capture a moving subject in low light like an orca in dark water under minimal daylight. Would you ever swim with orcas and humpbacks?! Just so you know we do this every year ;) Gear: Canon 5D Mark IV Canon 16-35mm Aquatica Housing Settings: 1/125 f/3.2 ISO 6400 Shot at 18mm Location: Norway Arctic Ocean Photo by instructor for the Wildlife Photo Course @jenninaturally #UltimatePhotoCourse - @ultimatephotocourse on Instagram

Have you ever heard of right whale dolphins? There are two species of right whale dolphins and this is a southern right whale dolphin. Both southern and northern right whale dolphins lack a dorsal fin - like beluga whales - but they are actually dolphins. Southern right whale dolphins are one of the least well-known species of dolphins, in part due to its preference for deep, oceanic waters and its distribution throughout the cool temperate sub-Antarctic waters of the southern hemisphere. In addition, they are only one of two species of right whale dolphins, but we think theyre pretty cool! 😎 📷: Pablo Caceres Contreras . . . #rightwhaledolphin #rightwhaledolphins #dolphin #species #dolphins #dolphinwatching #dolphinlove #dolphinsofinstagram #dolphins🐬 #dolphinsallday #dolphinsareawesome #southern #northern #hemisphere #antarctic #antarctica #saveourocean #saveouroceanlife - @whalesorg on Instagram

In 2018 the world watched with heavy hearts as J-35 (Tahlequah) carried her dead calf for 17 days, over 1,600 kilometers, throughout the Salish Sea. On September 4, 2020 Tahlequah became a mother again, giving birth to a healthy and precocious calf according to researchers at the Center of Whale Research. This calf brings the critically endangered population of Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) up to 73 individuals. At least two other females in the population are known to be pregnant as well. . Tahlequahs new calf is the first successful birth since J-56 (Tofino) was first spotted in Clayoquot Sound in the spring of 2019. This new calf, and the hope for two more in the near future, brings us a cautious new optimism for the SRKWs. Nutritional stress, resulting from the decline in chinook salmon availability, is one of the many factors that pose threat to the SRKWs. Because of this, a large percentage of pregnancies end in failure and calves face a 40% mortality rate. For Tahlequah, and the rest of the SRKWs, we hope this new calf is able to thrive. . The conservation and restoration of chinook salmon runs is one of the best ways we can help safe guard the future of the SRKWs. This September, Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society will be joining Tofino Resort and Marina for Fish for the Future, a conservation initiative aimed at raising money to protect wild salmon and the ecosystems they rely on. 100% of the proceeds raised by Fish for the Future will be dedicated to various Clayoquot Sound watershed projects in order to safeguard salmon populations for the future. It is our goal to promote conservation through educational outreach and inspire people to make everyday choices that can help to protect the future of salmon and all those who rely on them. . 📸 of J35 and new calf, J57 by Katie Jones, Center for Whale Research . #killerwhales #orca #southernresidentkillerwhales #srkws #marinebiology #marineresearch #conservation #education #tofino - @simrs_tofino on Instagram

⠀ #S7Airlines #S7_Blog - @s7airlines on Instagram

W O W. What a day!! First up we travelled a long way north before finding a very active calf off Newport Beach and then had an incredible dolphin interaction on our way home. 2nd trip was treated to some sensational tail slaps and tails throws by a huge female humpback cruising with her calf. Then in the afternoon we headed south for one of the best shows of the year. Two mothers and two calves non stop breaching for over an hour. Doesn’t get much better than that! Still buzzing. . . . . . #humpbackwhale #travel #boat #instagood #closencounter #sydneylife #sydneyphotographer . . . . #whalesnsw #mugging #ocean #nature #createcommune #artofvisuals #natgeo #marinelife #ourplanet #seashepherd #lonelyplanet #ourplanetdaily #australia #ilovesydney #lovemanly #seeaustralia #whalewatching #whales #whale #breach #sydney #northernbeaches #bondibeach - @oceanextreme on Instagram

Photo by @BrianSkerry An Orca mother carries her dead calf as she swims in the waters of the Norwegian Arctic. Orca calf mortality is high, often due to toxic contaminants in the mother’s milk (pollutants in the ocean). I witnessed this mourning procession on a dark, cold and snowy day and was touched deeply by the empathy exhibited by this mom and her family. Dolphins and whales are highly cognitive animals and have complex cultures that we are only beginning to appreciate. Heres a shot from a murky evening with T010C (b.1999) and his mother last week. We saw them twice in just over a week, once heading up the coast and once heading down. Did you know that the CA51’s starred in the pilot episode of The Blue Planet (original) that aired on September 12th 2001? — 12 million UK viewers watch the episode that had a segment focused on gray whale predations by killer whales based in Monterey Bay. It shows matriarch Star, as a young mom, including CA51A Aurora (who was still a young whale traveling with her mothers pod). I think CA51B Orion can also be seen as a small calf (someone correct me on that if I’m wrong). Bumper was not yet born. Exciting news- we have the first match ever made of killer whales sighted off Rottnest Island! Meet George. 🐋 Thanks to citizen science, we were able to identify one male killer whale, George, seen off Rottnest Island in 2016, 2019 and now in 2020- last week. Named by one of our citizen scientists who helped with this match and contributed imagery. This data is invaluable as we continue to build the bigger picture of killer whales seen off Western Australia. 🐋 Thank you to our citizen scientists and contributors: Plaxy, Dan, Ry, Ben and Patrick. Images here credited to: Ry Beaver and Patrick Lane. 🐋 They have all donated imagery that allowed this match of an individual to occur. Without your help and donation of data, we would never have made this discovery. Just an example of the power of citizen science. #citizenscience #projectorca #killerwhaleresearchaustralia - @orcaprojectoz on Instagram

27•07•2020 Yesterday I received an amazing gift, I finally saw an Adult male Orca. They are impressive and majestic animals. Look at their size compared to the boat, they are beautiful and enormous. Did you know that males are larger than females, and adult males are distinguishable (sexually dimorphic) by the increased size of their dorsal fin at sexual maturity (about 25 years). Male orcas usually grow to an average of 20-26 feet (6-8 m) and weigh 12,000 lb or more (5,400 kg). Male orcas become fully sexually mature at age 25. Between ages 12 and 15, their dorsal fin begins to grow taller and straighter, indicating the onset of sexual maturity. Male orcas typically don’t mate until after the age of 20. Males in the wild live 29 years on average, to a maximum of 50–60 years. A captive orcas lifespan is typically much shorter, often by 25 years or more. Don’t attend or support shows that keep animals in captivity. It is horrible to be locked up. #orca #wildlife #wanderlust #animals #saltlife #epic #explore #magic #nature #scuba #ocean #marinelife #dolphins #underwater #padi #adventure #sealife #oceanlife #sea #wildlifephotograph #afeland - @afelandrina on Instagram

A New Calf for the Southern Resident Orcas! It has been just two years since Tahlequah (J-35), a member of the endangered Southern Resident orca population, gave birth to a calf, who lived only half an hour. Last week, Tahlequah gave birth once again. And according to the Center for Whale Research on September 6th, her new baby, J-57, appears to be doing well: “Her new calf appeared healthy and precocious, swimming vigorously alongside its mother in its second day of free-swimming life. We know that it was not born today because its dorsal fin was upright, and we know that it takes a day or two to straighten after being bent over in the womb, so we assign its birthday as September 4, 2020. (Ergo gestation commenced in February 2019). . The good news and excitement over the new birth is tempered by the fact that the southern residents are officially designated an endangered population and that the mortality rate for young calves is 40 percent. Their troubles are largely due to three factors: the continuing decline of their preferred food chinook salmon; boat noise and traffic; and the pollution of the waters of the Salish Sea. However, the new baby is the third to be born to the southern residents since 2019, and the other two continue to survive. We wish them all well in the days ahead! Head to our website to read our full blog post about this wonderful news! Humpback whales: Of all the large whale species, humpbacks are the most animated and acrobatic. They can leap clear of the water, executing spectacular breaches. Another feature of these amazing whales is their long pectoral flippers which are almost one third of their body length, the longest of any whale. And they sing songs heard on recordings and in movies. https://savethewhales.org/humpback-whale/ #savethewhales #humpbackwhale #funfact - @savethewhalesca on Instagram

The Matriarch: A11 was an incredible mother. Not only to her own daughter, A35, who now continues to grow her own family, but A11 took on the role of adopted mother to Springer, A73. After Springer was re introduced into the Northern resident orca community in 2002 she spent many years in the company of A11 and her family until sadly in 2013, A11 passed away. Her legacy lives on in every recording we make. The beautiful delivery of the N4 passed down from generations before her now transfers to the newest member of the family, A52’s baby, born this year! Продолжение в карусели 👉🏻 - @wild_dolphin_girl on Instagram

- F A T F I N - C A 1 7 1 B - is an orphaned adult male killer whale. Born around the turn of the century he has become a favorite of California whale watchers. Orphaned at a very young age when his mother died in the early 2000’s his survival is actually very uncommon for a whale orphaned so young. He is frequently seen traveling alone but is also sighted with other orphaned males, or sometimes with other CA Biggs matrilines. — Fatfin is easily identifiable by his thicc dorito shaped dorsal fin and his unusually slim eye patch. He is most frequently spotted in Monterey Bay, but has been seen as far north as British Colombia. Last seen on Saturday, we are excited to see where this badass whale will pop up next! Not all catches come at the end of a hook, or by a gun… as I’m more than happy with my camera catch while out fishing yesterday, while trying to see through the smoke settling all through the #PNW and inundating Vancouver right now.

Out on the water, in the quiet of the early morning trying to see through the mists, when all of a sudden I heard the telltale “poofffssshhhh”… seeming to come from a few directions all at once. We were now sharing the moment with a trio of #Orcas, all working their predatory charms on the elusive chinook we were both chasing! *
Not so good for fishing, but when armed with my camera, the moment was about as perfect as it gets :)

The newest Southern Resident orca, just a few weeks old, has been confirmed to be a BOY. According to reports, baby (J57) and his mom Tahlequah (J35) are both doing well. . It has been two years since Tahlequah lost her young calf who lived for only half an hour, whom she carried for 17 days in a Tour of Grief that garnered worldwide attention. . The endangered Southern Resident population of the Salish Sea continue to face the challenges of their declining food source of chinook salmon, boat noise and traffic, and pollution. The birth of J57 is very good news, bringing the population of these whales to 73. It was a great day for whales! 🐳💙🌊 _____________________________________________ #whales #whale #killerwhales #orca #campbellriver #explorebc #destinationbc #wildlife #wildlifephotography #canada #nature #naturephotography #natgeoyourshot #ocean #oceanlife #imagesofcanada #britishcolumbia #vancouverisland #ourdailyplanet #earth_shotz #earthpix #earthoutdoors #explorecanada #island #islandlife - @jennifer.lynn007 on Instagram

Sometimes I hear people on whale watches express disappointment when humpback whales don’t breach, like it’s a given. Personally, I’m still shocked that breaches happen at all. On earth, in real life, today, there are 40 ton animals that can shoot 90% of their body out of the water. It sounds unlikely and I still barely believe my eyes when I see it in person. And no, it doesn’t happen on every single whale watch. But that’s why, even with so many days on the water and a pretty terrible memory, I can clearly recall every single breach I’ve seen. Breaches are special, whales are beautiful, and nature is best enjoyed when you don’t take any of it for granted. • • • • • • • • • • • • #oceanlife #waterlust #lovetheocean #bluesea #marinemammals #whalewatching #whales #humpbackwhale #yourshotphotographer #teamcanon #wildplanet #wildlifephotographer #discoverocean - @chelseamayerphotography on Instagram

Sept. 9, afternoon tour, 4 Ever Wild: We were very spoiled on this afternoon. As we returned from Race Rocks toward Victoria we took a slight detour to spend some quiet time with the T49A family of Bigg’s killer whales in magical late afternoon light and glassy seas. This is matriarch T49A with her nine-year-old son T49A3 just about to surface beside her. Its been a killer ( 😉 ) month for #killerwhales along the trail, with our resident #orca spotted from many sites - including Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and Glengorm just last night! Pictured are our local legends John Coe and Aquarius, two male killer whales from the West Coast Community. The Scottish gaelic for orca is madah-cuain which translates as ocean-wolf - an apt name for these intelligent creatures as they live and hunt in pods, and have even been known to prey on minke whales! Check out the sightings on our Whale Track app! #whaletrack . . . . . . . . #hebrideanwhaletrail #hwdt_org #hebrides #orca #whalewatching #lighthouse #ardnamurchan #lighthousesofinstagram #dolphin #dolphins #whale #whales #immerseyoursenses #scotlandisnow #scotland #scotlandtravel #scottishwildlife #wildlifephotography #sea #hiddenscotland #seapanda - @hebrideanwhaletrail on Instagram
