After an exhausting month for our team in Pakistan, 3 wolves and 2 monkeys are now in their new home with spacious enclosures. Today, together with the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), Dr Amir Khalil and his team have managed to safely transport the animals to the Ayub Park an hour away from the capital. Alice, a mother of three, was violently attacked by her partner of 10 years after she asked him for money to buy food for their children. This was not the first time he had been violent towards her, but this time she reported him. IJM supported her through the prosecution, and the man who abused her pleaded guilty. Now, Alice is able to take care of her children on her own, and her focus is on building a good future. IJM helped her get a job at a local dairy, and she’s teaching her children what she believes a relationship between a man and woman should look like. In Northern Uganda, where Alice grew up, nearly 95.9% of women surveyed reported that violence against women and girls is happening in their communities (according to an IJM- UNDP report in 2019) “There will be a time when men will stop beating up their wives,” she said. “I see a future where men come to learn that even women have rights.” - @ijm on Instagram

That is a scary amount of #pollution if one thinks about the damage that this can do to the land and marine animals that call this area home. This massive cleanup initiative was coordinated by Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve in partnership with @dolphinencountoursmozambique in celebration of International #coastalcleanupday on 19 September. Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid guest posting here for @everydayextinction showing some new work from Kenya looking at community based conservation and our relationship with the wildlife, and ecosystem that supports it. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do. I cant believe that in a couple of months this moment would have been captured a year ago. I was only a couple of months pregnant with Grace at the time, blissfully unaware of the looming Coronavirus. We had huge plans for 2020. So much so that my main fear was that @jamessuter would be traveling for most of the year. This would mean that we would have to take Grace on some jobs while she was still incredibly young in order to spend time with her dad. My fear was that I would be doing a lot of the early months with Grace and Tom alone, without James, because he would be on the road. And then coronavirus hit. The events of the year have completely changed since then. We anticipated that this was the year that we would reach many of our goals. Whether it be in terms of @blackbeanproductions as a company, personal goals as a family, or for James with his brand as a private guide in Africa. 2020 was going to be the year so many of our dreams would materialize into a reality. Instead, this year has centered around gratitude, reflection, and slowing down. More than anything, we had to stop and be grateful for what we had rather than focusing on everything that was lost. We are so excited that we can travel again- something we completely took for granted in the past! Its such an exciting feeling that our borders are finally opening up and that our team will be traveling on shoots again. So many of our projects that were postponed can finally go ahead now, whilst making sure we are taking the necessary safety precautions. It is easy to get ahead of ourselves by allowing work and stress to dominate our lives. This year has shown us the beauty of a slower life. This does not mean working less or having our dreams change necessarily, but it has allowed us and our team to prioritize rest and quality time a bit more. We are so grateful that we can do the work that we love doing. Hopefully, we can continue to make a difference to peoples lives through our films and help the organizations and people on the ground that we are working for.
