On Friday, the team rescued a male adult giraffe that had a metal rod in the left hind leg. The AKTF team joined by other organisations including, KWS Vet Dr Limo and his team,David Sheldrick Trust Team, Mara Conservancy Rangers (Oloololo rangers & Angama station rangers) worked as one team and managed to rescue the giraffe. The Rangers will be meeting the community elders briefly for the purpose of enhancing and strengthening community engagement in protecting the wildlife within the community areas. There are several resident giraffe families in the community areas that need to be protected as the problem has been reoccurring. By selling the feathers to us these farmers keep their guinea fowls for much longer preferring to make money from their feathers which is more lucrative. The money they make is generally put towards feeding their families and kids school fees too. Ending this week with amazing news out of Nigeria. ECF partner, @thewcs announced zero elephants have been poached in the last four years!!! The ECF supports their anti poaching operations and specialist training for rangers in the Yankari Game Reserve since 2015. #repost @thewcs ・・・ Excellent news out of Nigeria. There have been no elephants poached in four years in Yankari Game Reserve, which contains the country’s largest elephant population, now slowly recovering after an onslaught of killing ended in 2015. . WCS, which helps manage the protected area, attributes the success to well-managed, well-equipped and highly trained rangers who patrol the 866-square-mile reserve, which also supports important populations of lion, buffalo, hippo, roan and hartebeest. . Yankari’s elephant population remains stable at 100-150 individuals, and is expected to grow in the coming years, provided that conservationists remain steadfast in keeping poachers out of the reserve. . The announcement was made just days before officials gather for the meeting of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Meet farmers in the community of NonSuch in East Portland engaged in The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica(EFJ) Funded Drivers River Watershed Project. The project aims to, through demonstration plots,training seminars and workshops educate and empower farners on how farming practices impact the ocean . The farmers are taught alternate methods of cultivation that are not only more sustainable but also offer higher yield. They are also given fruit and timber trees to replant deforested areas with plants that they are more likely to maintain and that can contribute to income generation. UPDATE: This past week Rescate Playas Borinquen nonprofit invested $3,500 in maintenance and cleaning of the areas around the old Naval Buildings/ Ruins. We subcontracted the work, and the Department of Natural Resources was consulted before hand. Every year in February around “la candelaria” these areas are illegally lit on fire and all vegetation burns, hence there are no trees. For decades these areas were abandoned and used for illicit & illegal activities. Thanks to all of the improvements and maintenance we have done, things are much safer and accessible for the general public. If the areas are not maintained then they could loose the protection that cover them. Since 2013 we have singlehandedly been responsible for hundred of trees being planted and tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance. Thanks for all the amazing feedback about my @nytimestravel Malawi photo essay. Lots of questions about how I behave around kids when I’m working - I suppose these will give you a bit of an idea of that. (Thankfully I have reason to stick to Malawi, which means you don’t need to watch my street dance-off with a group of kids aged 3-8 in Karamoja from a few years ago.) 🤣 Also, a lot of questions about things like consent. This is a tricky subject, not least because our understanding of what that means doesn’t necessarily translate that well. The sheer number of people we come across (especially kids, whom I often photograph for their pleasure more than my own), sometimes not knowing until years later if a photograph will be used for anything, makes having any kind of written consent from everyone who appears in any single picture impossible in practical terms, as does things like writing down names (although I do this whenever it is feasible, and certainly if I engage in a one-on-one conversation and then take portrait photographs of that person). Having said that, I - and most other photographers I know - don’t tend to photograph people (and kids in particular) without first having asked for permission, and I generally don’t enter a school or a village without a chaperone of sorts - a teacher, chief, parent, or project employee. I always want my visits to be appreciated, so the thought of causing discomfort or making anyone upset by my actions would certainly be more important than taking a particular photo, no matter how good I think it might be. We have to be human first, photographers second, and as always: be respectful. And if everyone assumes that the intentions of others are good - and let’s face it, they usually are - then most situations end up being very pleasant. (Also, vast majority of people I’ve come across on my travels absolutely love being photographed, so it really is a win-win if done in the right way.) Alice, a mother of three, was violently attacked by her partner of 10 years after she asked him for money to buy food for their children. This was not the first time he had been violent towards her, but this time she reported him.⁣⁣ ⁣ IJM supported her through the prosecution, and the man who abused her pleaded guilty.⁣⁣ ⁣ Now, Alice is able to take care of her children on her own, and her focus is on building a good future. A rescue in progress... Yesterday, AKTF and MC Rangers (Ololoolo gate) went out for a patrol at Nyakweri forest. Along the way, they saw a stranded and exhausted baby Eland- about 2 days old. She was searching for her mother, unfortunately the mother was far away since Elands has a tendency of hiding their calves in a safe place, and only returns in the evening for feeding (nursing) until the calf is able to run on its own. The Team managed to get hold of the calf and tried to locate the mother, to no luck. Fortunately, one of the community members; Mrs Lankas was of great help. She warmly accepted to take care of the baby Eland for a night in her boma, while the team continues the search of the mother. Currently the main hindrance to a beautiful co-existence between Human and wildlife is compounded by electric fences erected which are blocking many wildlife corridors. We are looking forward to a successful complete rescue and happy reunion! I am a wife and a mother of 8 children. My mother, who is in her 80’s also lives with us and she is sickly. I also take care of Karanja, James and Alex who I have raised since they were very young boys. We all live here on this small piece of land that we were given by the government. Three of my children managed to finish high school and have moved out, two were not able to finish primary school because of limited finances, while the others are still ongoing with school. I live with most of my children here at home, and we have been trying to get them jobs so they can be independent. . The greatest kindness I have received has been from Flying Kites. They have educated Karanja, James and Alex, and my son, Maara, who was in Flying Kites Academy. For this I am truly grateful. . The biggest challenge I have felt is that I am not able to raise these children as I would have wished to, especially with the limitation of resources. I also cannot quite say I have yet experienced a day where I was truly happy. It is also really difficult for me to see that I am not in a position to help myself, let alone the children. Oftentimes, I receive help from my neighbors, they give me food, lately they have also supported me financially by paying for my medical bills as I have been sickly. My joints are in pain, I also get dizzy. The doctors are yet to find out what is happening to me. . It is really tough for me because I know I am financially unstable. A community on the front lines of conservation Mola community members are picking up the mantle of wildlife defenders as Lion Guardians. Not only does this increase employment in the area and individuals’ ability to support their families, but by having the knowledge to protect livestock, the community is joining the fight for conservation. Monitoring predator movement and building mobile lion-proof bomas is effective in reducing attacks on the people’s cattle as well as making fertile grounds for increased crop yields and thus food security. This last week has been an experience I will never forget 😍 I now know why Malawi is called the heart of Africa ❤️ . I’ve never smiled so much but at the same time been at a loss for parents & children who have so little (despite their generosity & big smiles). These feeding programmes make such a huge difference in these children’s lives, for most of the children it can be their only meal of the day. Through @onefeedstwo and @mindfulchefuk the meals we donate really do help these families every single day. . From being a human climbing frame to sharing porridge with Stellia (who’s the same age as Sienna) I have memories that will last a lifetime. We may be on the other side of the 🌍but we’ve seen in person the positive impact we can have. . After an exhausting month for our team in Pakistan, 3 wolves and 2 monkeys are now in their new home with spacious enclosures. Today, together with the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), Dr Amir Khalil and his team have managed to safely transport the animals to the Ayub Park an hour away from the capital. Back in April, we launched the Angaza Project, Kakenyas Dreams emergency response to the COVID-19 crisis. Through the Angaza Project, we deliver care packages containing vital supplies including food, feminine hygiene products, study materials, and solar lights and radios for distance learning to each of our students households. In May, we distributed the first round of care packages to our girls and their families. Another round of care packages was distributed in July, and our third round of distributions is happening now! In 2019 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bugimotwa Growers Cooperative Society to manage their coffee washing station. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Our goal is to run the washing station, while training the community in its operation and management. We hope that at the end of our lease we can step back and become nothing more than a customer of a thriving community run washing station. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The washing station has been idle since the 1990s and is in considerable disrepair. None of the fermentation or drying infrastructure was functional. It is no surprise that this year’s World Environmental Health day, marked every 26th of September, is about public health. Certainly, the current global pandemic has brought forth the extent to which we are all connected, existing in an intricate ecosystem, where the health of one component - from climate, to habitat, to plant and wildlife - impacts the other. More than ever, this year has zeroed in on the significant role that conserving biodiversity plays in human health. ... Beyond the obvious benefits (food security, safe water, clean air, ecotourism etc) scientists are now finding that a healthy environment may be a key factor in avoiding future pandemics! How? For starters, the less the encroachment into natural habitats, the less the risk of transmitting disease between species. (PS. the transmission mechanisms of the corona-virus is not yet certain, but research indicates that it is a zoonotic disease.) The bottom line is that ecological instability impacts the resilience of every species. …… Yet, nature is declining and species facing extinction. For example, the size of wildlife population has decreased by two-thirds since 1970. Intact forest land decreased by 7 percent from the year 2000 to 2013. That’s the equivalent of 36,000 football fields every day for 13 years! How does such erosion impact human wellbeing? The answer is immensely. ... Communities and their sustainability is a catalyst to conservation. And vice versa. This is the Lewa model. 17 community water projects, giving over 2000 people access to clean water. 400 small scale farmers trained on sustainable agriculture in the past 6 years. Tree nurseries that produce 6000 tree seedlings per year, regenerating forest cover for both human and wildlife habitats. Over 4000 students visiting the Lewa conservation education center every year for environmental awareness. And in keeping with the theme of the day, health clinics that attend to over 50,000 people in a year! There’s more, but you get the idea, right? I cant believe that in a couple of months this moment would have been captured a year ago. I was only a couple of months pregnant with Grace at the time, blissfully unaware of the looming Coronavirus. We had huge plans for 2020. So much so that my main fear was that @jamessuter would be traveling for most of the year. This would mean that we would have to take Grace on some jobs while she was still incredibly young in order to spend time with her dad. My fear was that I would be doing a lot of the early months with Grace and Tom alone, without James, because he would be on the road. And then coronavirus hit. The events of the year have completely changed since then. We anticipated that this was the year that we would reach many of our goals. Whether it be in terms of @blackbeanproductions as a company, personal goals as a family, or for James with his brand as a private guide in Africa. 2020 was going to be the year so many of our dreams would materialize into a reality. Instead, this year has centered around gratitude, reflection, and slowing down. More than anything, we had to stop and be grateful for what we had rather than focusing on everything that was lost. We are so excited that we can travel again- something we completely took for granted in the past! Its such an exciting feeling that our borders are finally opening up and that our team will be traveling on shoots again. So many of our projects that were postponed can finally go ahead now, whilst making sure we are taking the necessary safety precautions. It is easy to get ahead of ourselves by allowing work and stress to dominate our lives. This year has shown us the beauty of a slower life. This does not mean working less or having our dreams change necessarily, but it has allowed us and our team to prioritize rest and quality time a bit more. The Stabbath before Sabbath is when we do a big hunt for the family. Us fishermen go out and spear fish while the women and kids get the veggies, coconut cream and stone oven ready for the slow overnight cook. The next morning we all rest no cooking or duties. The religious go to church and sing in the beautiful Marvo language and the rest of us are called Back sliders the term speaks for its self. Its a great day as you are required to do nothing, in the past this day Frustrated me, I think because its religious and being a westerner I battle being present and feel its a wasted day. Yesterday Morayo-Hope hugged me and said You really are the best mummy ever! (side-note: this was after I said yes to buying @kneaddoughnuts!). ⁠ ⁠ She then burst into tears and said Thats why I worry about you dying, I dont want you to die. (We get a lot of these sudden emotional outbursts these days). I didnt say I wouldn’t die. I just said “we’re alive today, lets make the most of that.” Because today is really all we’re certain we have! ⁠ So we chilled in the hammock together as I completed some work and she caught up on her summer reading from school. The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻! 🌊 Over the past weekend, we removed almost 1 and a half tons of garbage 🧴 🗑️ from the beaches along the coastline that stretches a distance of over 37 km from Ponta do Ouro to Ponta Dobela in Mozambique. That is a scary amount of #pollution if one thinks about the damage that this can do to the land and marine animals that call this area home. This massive cleanup initiative was coordinated by Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve in partnership with @dolphinencountoursmozambique in celebration of International #coastalcleanupday on 19 September. He came to #Uganda with 11 family members including his wife, Ayen, and is four children – Mach, Chol, Mangol and Abuk. They left Jonglei because there was violence. Soldiers were shooting people and their neighbours were fleeing and running away. They took a decision to move in just a day and then departed in the night. One of his children, 1 ½ year-old Alier, was killed as they left Bor town, and his uncle was killed in the same attack. They were living in fear, had no water and no food. They arrived in Uganda a month after departing Bor town.
