Nous t’attendions puisque tu revenais de Dakar! Je me rappelle que tu voulais qu’on arrête ce jeu pour faire des choses plus productives et moins bruyant aussi 😅. Mais en vrai gamines on écoutait pas. J’étais loin de me douter que ce serait la dernière soirée que l’on passerait ensemble. 25 août 2014; on s’est réveillé en apprenant la nouvelle de la mort du papa de khady qui était ton ami, tu était celui qui l’a consolé avant qu’elle ne parte pour les funérailles ce jour là. Quelques heures après tu es sorti faire des courses et je me souviens de la dernière phrase que tu m’as dites en partant “Au revoir ma chérie” ! Et ce fut la dernière fois que l’on s’est vu. Je me rappelle encore du bruit de la voiture lorsque l’accident tragique est survenu; de mon choc en apprenant que c’était ta voiture; et de la détresse et mon impuissance en apprenant ton décès!🥺 Je ne verrais plus ce sourire magnifique, je ne pourrais plus profiter de ta gentillesse ta compréhension; tu nous gâtait mais tu nous éduquais aussi. Je ne pourrais jamais te remercier comme je le voudrais vraiment mais je tâcherai de ne jamais faire quoi que ce soit qui pourrait te couvrir de honte ou qui t’aurait mis en colère si tu étais encore parmi nous! A community on the front lines of conservation Mola community members are picking up the mantle of wildlife defenders as Lion Guardians. Not only does this increase employment in the area and individuals’ ability to support their families, but by having the knowledge to protect livestock, the community is joining the fight for conservation. Monitoring predator movement and building mobile lion-proof bomas is effective in reducing attacks on the people’s cattle as well as making fertile grounds for increased crop yields and thus food security. Community members are proud to be making progress and protecting wildlife. In 2019 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bugimotwa Growers Cooperative Society to manage their coffee washing station. ⠀ ⠀ Our goal is to run the washing station, while training the community in its operation and management. We hope that at the end of our lease we can step back and become nothing more than a customer of a thriving community run washing station. ⠀ ⠀ The washing station has been idle since the 1990s and is in considerable disrepair. None of the fermentation or drying infrastructure was functional. Although the camp is away from the main Luangwa River, there are two permanent lagoons here, each with an impressive population of hippo and crocodile. This camp houses only 5 chalets which means that individual attention is tailored for each guests’ experience. Each chalet is en-suite. The main area of the camp is comprised of a thatched roof and sandy floor, housing the bar and library. Other communal areas can be found dotted around under trees in the shade. For our clients and followers in the UK (or with access to the BBC IPlayer streaming service), this weekend brings Sir David Attenborough back to our screens in Extinction: The Facts which will be broadcast on Sunday (13 Sep) at 8pm BST. The eminent natural history expert highlights the plight of various endangered species, many of which he has introduced us to during his film-making career which spans six decades. We are facing a crisis, he begins, and one that has consequences for us all. The programme features the worlds last two northern white rhinos - Najin and Fatu - who are protected at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the setting of our Porini Rhino Camp. One of the main reasons for this wildlife emergency is the devastating loss of habitat for animals. The programme concludes that positive action must be taken now to protect habitat, and it is projects like our wildlife conservancies in Kenya that are vital to the future of many species. Our wildlife conservancies are vast areas of land that are set aside as natural habitat for wild animals. Many of the iconic animals of Africa - including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards and cheetahs - are attracted to the conservancies where they are safe and protected. Sir David admired our conservancy concept after a visit to our Porini Amboseli Camp a few years ago, saying, What a marvellous example of how people and wildlife can live alongside one another. It is the income of low-impact eco-tourism from our small Porini Safari Camps and donations to our Adopt An Acre plan that pays for the land.
