Beauty is not rooted in the texture of your hair Or the shade of your skin, for beauty can not be found in the physicality of beings because it’s seed blooms in the content of ones heart And though the thorns that pierce your skin Seem painful For such a rare beauty angers most They are simply illusions to distract you from your essence For your aura exudes love even to the broken-hearted Your spirit is like blood, for it is the pipeline to the heart And your soul, your soul so bright for it even shines in a dwindling world You are beauty in its rarest form A Black Woman🖤 - @okkkennnn on Instagram

Thank you @pkay_images for this picture. Princess decorated with her favorite Adinkra Symbols. The traditional costumes of Ghana are not just beautiful. The culture of this country and its ancient heritage influence the folk clothing much. That’s why the designs, fabrics, and patterns aren’t random. They are used by Ghanaians for a long period of time, and therefore, they carry the old knowledge and tradition. At the same time, the national outfit of Ghana looks so bright and festive that it brightens the mood of everyone around. One of the main clothing crafts in Ghana is the weaving. Locals had wooden looms and produced handmade fabric long before the colonization of this land. They wove cloth from cotton and raffia fibers (widespread African palm tree). This craft isn’t forgotten even today. Ghanaians still use their traditional looms to make Gonja cloth and kente cloth – national clothing of Ghana is usually made from these fabrics. - @adinkrarepublic on Instagram

Its a lot easier to digest an old Grandmother with tired feet, who doesnt stand up because she wants to fight for inequality, but because her feet and her back are tired, and shes worked all day. See Grandmothers, old Grandmothers, are not scary, but young radical Black women, who dont take any stuff from anybody are very scary. Those who stand up to power and are willing to die for that, those are not the kind of people that make us comfortable. The Maasai have been creating beaded jewelry for a very long time. It all started long before the first European contact had occurred. Before, the tribe used natural resources to create their jewelry. Clay, wood, bone, copper and brass are just few of the materials that were used. When trade with Europeans started in the late 19th century, glass beads were suddenly available, and it is with those that the Maasai decided to continue their tradition of beaded jewels. Maasai women are the ones in charge of the beading. It’s their duty to be able to craft such unique jewelry that is later worn by both men and women. The beaded jewels accompany the tribe through all stages of life. Indeed, the colors and the structure of the beaded necklaces can indicate someone’s age, social status, marital status, and even whether a woman has given birth to a boy or a girl. • • • • #Maasai #TembeaKenya #Africa #Afrika #AfrikaInPictures #Nature #Africans #African #GainWithXtianDela #BeautifulAfrica #Safari #AfricanSafari #morocco #Nigeria #Tanzania #Kenya #zanzibar #Ghana #southafrica - @afrikainpictures on Instagram

Blackness isnt a barrier. The establishment of non-white, Greek letter organizations was created to challenge inequities, as well as promote community and racial uplift in higher education and beyond. With the increase of senseless violence in America and the continued strength of the #BlackLivesMatter (#LasVidasNegrasImportan) movement, what role does the Latinx community play when some are still trying to connect their own racial-ethnic identity to the world? How are Latinx organizations that promote inclusion tackling anti-Blackness, and what does it expose about the work to be done? Join Erica Nichole (Sigma Lambda Upsilon Sorority, Inc.) and our own Janel Martinez (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.), alongside Ysanet Batista, member of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. and founder of WokeFoods; Dr. Ariana Curtis, member of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. We’re so happy to be able to share the news that this print by designer @annkelle will soon be available on fabric! Kelle shared her original artwork in a post a couple weeks ago. Kelle explains “I drew this as I was processing raw hurt and pain towards racism and the racial injustices in our country. The simple caption “See Us. Hear Us. Love Us.” is both my heart’s cry and hope.” Robert Kaufman will be dedicating all of its profits from this print to a scholarship fund for Black aspiring textile students, which we are in the process of setting up. We will share more details about the fund as it is developed. This print will be up on our website early next week, so stay tuned! - @robertkaufman on Instagram

DTMR presents Music Educator Perspectives on Decolonization: Positionality, Terminology, Approaches Thursday, August 13th at 6 PM Central Standard Time The term decolonization is making its way into wider usage in music education, often without a connection to real life experiences or an understanding of the ideas it encompasses. DTMR Founder and Executive Director Brandi Waller-Pace will be joined by Kristi McEwen, Nate Holder, Michelle McCauley, Diljeet Kaur Bhachu, and Jon Silpayamanant to discuss concepts of decolonization from different racially minoritized positionalities, the handling of terminology among music educators and culture bearers, and implications for our work moving forward. Join us for a live screening of our conversation on our fb page and YouTube channel! - @decolonizingthemusicroom on Instagram

The New Gibney Company 2020/2021 💛 “... this diverse collective is unified by a shared focus on generosity, both in and out of the studio. The new Gibney Company desires to generate, respond to, and navigate the now, while co-creating the future.” I am honored and thrilled to share the news of the new expanded @gibneycompany . I’m truly in awe of every single one of these remarkable Artist Citizens and humbly looking forward to begin the work of rebuilding and regenerating together... On a personal note, as a Black man who has spent most of my career as “the only” or “one of the only” in the spaces I’ve occupied, it has and continues to be a personal mission of mine to model through action that diversity does not = a sacrifice of quality... the idea that there aren’t enough talented dancers of color to create diverse companies is a myth that must be dismantled. Equity takes effort... but it’s experiencing our differences that teaches us about one another. That opportunity for learning creates new pathways toward personal and artistic evolution. So, I believe that effort is imperative. Growing up, I didn’t believe the career I desired was available to me, because researching companies and going to live performances I rarely saw myself. I thought “they don’t want me.” It excites me to imagine what the future of our field could look like when more young dancers of color are able to see themselves represented in meaningful ways in every facet of the field. Thankful to be on this journey with the visionary @ginagibney , the inspiring @amymiller11111 , @alexandrawells.dance , @zanderander , @renabutler , @iam.zui , @jesse_obremski , @kevinmpaja , @marlaphelan , @jayhernshiau , @jacob.thoman , @jaketribusdance , @lealzie , @trinamannino , and @wyckoffcollective 💫💛 #LetsGO *Gibney Centers remain closed, and Gibney Company has canceled all performances through December 2020. On est 47. On a décidé de faire front commun. De faire s’imbriquer nos combats. Que l’intersection soit. Pas de justice sociale sans justice écologique. Pas de lutte féministe sans lutte antiraciste. Pas d’égalité sans inclusivité. Bref. First and foremost, Thank you. Thank you to each and every individual who has prayed for me, thought of me, sent me their love and has showered me with their support. In this present moment, it is my only responsibility to be real with myself and to be real with the ones who truly love me and care for my healing. I have without fail, shared with you my brightest days, and I know that sharing with you what has been my darkest will be the light for any man or woman who is feeling the same defeat I felt just only a week ago.    Every one of us has a desire, whether small or big, to make it out of where we come from to an ideal future place that includes, freedom to be who we choose, security for our children and families, and fortune to share with the ones we love. We believe these things can co-exist with just being happy. I believed that, that as a black woman, as an artist, an influence, a personality I could shape my world, and with whom I believed to be my partners, they could help me share my world.   Over the past 11 years there were promises made to protect and portray my story, with the authenticity and honesty I gave. I was betrayed, taken advantage of, overworked, and underpaid. I wrote a letter over 2 months ago asking to be freed from what I believed was excessive and unfair. I explained in personal detail the demise I was experiencing. My cry for help went totally ignored. However the demands persisted. It was my spirit, and my soul that was tainted the most. There are a few things I count on most to be, a good mother, a good daughter, a good partner, a good sister, and a good person. Who I was, begun to mean little to nothing, because it would only be how I was portrayed on television that would matter. It was witnessing the slow death of the woman I became, that discouraged my will to fight. I felt like I was no longer living, I was existing for the purpose of a corporations gain and ratings, and that killed me. Mental illness is real. We have to normalize acknowledging it and stop associating it with shame and humiliation. The pain that I have experienced over the past 11 years has slowly ate away at my spirit and my mental. Inspiration can come from a variety of sources. I was inspired a while back to do these two photos from images I had seen of children in other countries photographed for National Geographic Magazine. Each episode brings new experiences and journeys but you know this was a special one for me: @sungkangsta joins us this week on @AsianEnoughPod. We got into the FAST movies and #justiceforhan, and so much more. Thank you Sung for diving in with us. This is the story of a Georgia kid who followed his Hollywood dream to LA, linked up with future collaborator @justinlin, and found the spark that made Han a fan favorite from TOKYO DRIFT on. (Technically speaking, from BTL on... 😊) It’s about #family IRL, like the stepdad who taught Sung valuable life lessons, and the Asian Am film community that built the groundwork for the mainstream visibility we’re now starting to see. #F9 now opens in 2021 so why not take this time to get to know Sung Kang even better? And check out the great convos he’s having at @SungsGarage, where he flipped the script and had me on in his first episode and managed to not be totally weirded out by the Han memorial @uhnet and I made for the F&F BBQ @bdgrabinski and I threw in the beforetimes. Please give it a listen, share your thoughts in the comments and stay safe, fam.🎙🎧🙏 (📷: @dania_maxwell for @latimes) - @jenyamato on Instagram

This farm is doing good work! #Repost @soulfirefarm with @get_repost ・・・ We believe that healing is possible and justice is necessary. We are appalled by the recent police killings of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Sean Reed and Breonna Taylor, and the tragic murder of Ahmaud Arbery by a vigilante and former police officer. And we applaud the innumerable ways that people are coming together to push for systemic change and offer support, protection, and mutual aid with one another in their wake. We extend deep condolences to the families for their profound irreparable loss; and expand empathy for the outrage of millions who witnessed sacred precious Black life extinguished before our eyes, and the way it rhymes with countless acts of brutal racist violence throughout our nation’s history. We know that racial terror is seeped into the very fabric and foundation of this country by design. We know that our collective outrage and fatigue is not in response to isolated incidences of police brutality, but rather a system of white supremacy that is evident in our food system, housing system, education system, health care system, criminal justice system and fundamental human right to safety and dignity. Against the backdrop of COVID 19 in which Black people are dying at nearly three times the rate of white people, in which communities of color are contributing the majority of “essential work” yet experiencing the most acute economic devastation, in which “reopening the economy” is more important than the Black and Brown and poor people whose lives it will cost, is a country that must radically transform – not return to normal. This is a time that calls all of us to come together to decompose structural racism and white supremacy to fertilize our soils conducive to life, that we may cultivate a world where all of us can breathe. This requires engagement on multiple levels through a myriad of valid and vital avenues for change. We commit to working alongside you to do everything within our power to dismantle structural anti-Black racism, and are hopeful that WE WILL WIN. Let us channel our grief, rage, hope and magic into meaningful action. Check out the compilation of - @kindcertified on Instagram

Pride is different this year for so many reasons. This is the fifth year that DECA Pride has tried to bring Pride fun to this neighbourhood. While were not gathering to hear queer writers, or to celebrate Pride at the market, folks are working on an amazing virtual event, hopefully coming in the next few weeks but stay tuned for details. A few things to let you know about for THIS weekend: SELFIE SPOTS! We cant have our selfie booth at the market this year (launched by our friends at Silly Goose Kids in 2017!), but a few local queer-owned businesses have created their own where we are invited to show our Pride with an awesome backdrop. Please visit: Silly Goose Kids Olds Cool General Store The Pink Studio Toronto The Workaround Take a pic in these spots and if you want to, tag it with #eastendproud or #decapride so we can see the love! FLAGS! Thanks to the generous help from Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s office and to Shamie at Silly Goose for taking care of the order, DECA Pride purchased several hundred rainbow flags that we are distributing with the help of local businesses to show our Pride in Danforth East. You can grab your flag from the following places (first come, first served): Silly Goose Kids Olds Cool General Store PRESS books. coffee. vinyl East Toronto Coffee Co RED ROCKET COFFEE Last but not least, hopefully youve see our East End Proud posters around. Many thanks to Angela Wagner from Umlaut Design for the design and to the Amanda at The Workaround for printing so many copies and to everyone who put them up! Thanks to everyone for being part of our efforts to build community within our community. Black Lives Matter. Happy Pride. This one hurts. It hurt to tell my son that the man who portrayed his favorite superhero has gone to heaven. I pray Chadwick Boseman knows the impact that his craft has had on an entire generation of Black children and families. He literally was the focal point of a movement that has awakened a spirit, creative genius, and self love within so many of us that centers African pride, culture and images. He helped bring stories to life that teach us to be proud of OUR history. Black children like mine don’t fully understand the lack of representation in media and images the way we do, and it’s because of the craftsmanship of people like Chadwick Boseman and Ryan Coogler who flawlessly brought our beauty, brilliance, and strength to the forefront of our imagination. If you can see it, you can believe it, and if you believe it, you can be it. Thank you King Chadwick for sharing your gifts with us and for positively influencing an entire generation of Black children to be proud of their brown skin and their African heritage. You are forever our hero. Praying for his wife and family. Hello world! As you can see, my posts are even more rare during these crazy times. After I was on such a high from surviving the marathon, quarantine happened and well, here we are...still quarantining but with racial turmoil and literal ash falling from the skies. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. But I still thank God for every day that I wake up and feel the love from my family and friends. I am choosing to take it one day at a time. When people ask me how we are doing? I tell everyone the truth - we are doing our best. To get Sky through remote learning. To give Ash the attention he needs. To support each other and provide ourselves time to reset and think. It’s a lot, but I know that others are going through more. Sky turned 7 in July and Ash will be 4 soon enough. They are so sad about not being able to trick-or-treat this year but we remind them that this is temporary. We will be able to see and hug our friends one day and it will be the best feeling in the world, but during this time, Sky and Ash are bonding and learning from one another. When they say they’re bored, I tell them “I gave you each other. Go have a staring contest!” 😝 Anyways, I just wanted to say hi to everyone again. I’m here and I am blessed. Enjoy these pics that Ja took of the kids over the summer. When I’m overwhelmed, I look at pictures and videos of the kids and I cry happy tears. #skytecson #ashtecson #whenaminotcrying #mamaiscryingagain #jaisstillthefunone - @bevtecson on Instagram

Received these today from Shanghai, 2017. I scrolled through the photos while listening to a news conference where our president defended repeatedly referring to the ‘Chinese Virus’ despite its undeniable problems and despite countless hate crimes against Asian people in the US in recent weeks. 1) FDT and 2) We’re all in this shit together, if this virus can’t help spread that idea I’m not sure what can. 🙏🏾@tiantian880, @asaaddo and @rockbundartmuseum 🦾 - @androszb on Instagram

QUT - On 23 September 2020, @prideinlaw was invited to return to @qutlawsociety for its annual @ashurst_official LGBTIQA+ and the Law Forum. This year the founder of Pride in Law and current President of its Queensland Chapter, Dean Clifford-Jones, shared the stage with lawyer Maddison H. and employment law solicitor Crispin Scott. Our special thanks to Peter Black for moderating the night and the inaugural ‘Gender and Sexuality Officer’, Rebecca Cohen, for her warm welcome. These forums create an avenue to shed a light on professional inequalities, such as those that continue in the transgender community around gender reassignment surgery and access to medical care. While the path to inclusion is long, step by step it is getting better. #law #diversity #inclusion #diversityandinclusion #equality #lgbt - @prideinlaw on Instagram

Did you know in Canada, 17% of adults between 16 to 65 years of age struggle with low levels of literacy? This impacts the development of crucial skills needed for employment, safety, health, confidence, and community connection. Early literacy development is crucial and builds a strong foundation for a lifetime of accomplishments. Getting children excited about reading at a young age only reinforces this strong foundation. Literacy charities provide crucial funding and support for literacy programs across Canada, instilling a love of reading in children and assisting adult-learners and newcomers to Canada with literacy skills. You can help provide access to books, education, and much more by visiting the link in our profile.
