Gabriel Kuri 1970, Mexico City Focusing on the objects and space that mediate human relationships, Gabriel Kuri explores the potential for transformation latent in familiar situations when observed from an unconventional angle. Playing with the principles of minimalism and the history of consumption, he integrates elements of everyday life into sculptures and collages. Residues of human interactions —plastic bags, advertising flyers, receipts, and tickets— are brought together with stones, coins, and cigarette butts, as well as industrial materials, such as cement, brushed steel, and insulation rolls. Kuri draws the viewer’s attention to the dynamic and unstable space at the intersection of two opposite concepts: in the precarious and yet precise meeting of the unexpected. The creation of systems is at the base of his artistic practice, ordering different elements until certain patterns begin to emerge and new semantic connections are generated between existing forms and their uses. Often accompanied by idioms and vernacular phrases, his pieces invite a multilayered dialogue between the verbal and the visual. Le Muse Inquiete, Giardini della Biennale Room 4 - The 70’s: Interdisciplinary and political work In the early 1970s La Biennale’s biggest problem was still its statute. Debates at the governmental level on the issue began in early 1973, and on 26 July the Italian Parliament finally approved new regulations to modernise the former Fascist statute, in force since 1938. The new statute, in addition to adding Architecture and Television as new departments, highlighted the need for “ongoing activities” and “local activities”. La Biennale thus emerged from the Giardini and theatres and moved out into uncharted terrain. Performances were presented at the Porto Marghera petrochemical plant, with an Othello remembered for its quality but also the uniqueness of the experience. Fabio Mauri directed the Ca’ Foscari company in the provocatively titled What is Fascism?, which moved from a marquee in Campo San Polo to the rooms of a technical institute in Mestre and the Jesolo public library. The Living Theatre occupied town squares and unusual spaces, as did Jerzy Grotowski, with his workshop and performances on the island of San Giacomo in Paludo. - To add more diversity to the otherwise uniform dimensions of the documents on display, the black and white blown up pictures and documents also work as architectural elements subdividing the space and providing a more intuitive understanding of the curatorial themes. The opening intervention on the facade well exemplifies this attitude. Formafantasma selected six different historical photos staring form 1897, documenting how the pavilion hosting the show, has been modified over the years to adapt to the styles and politics of the different eras. . Ateliê em Perdizes. Projeto novo no site! . A proposta é a transformação de um galpão localizado no bairro de Perdizes, São Paulo, em um ateliê para uma artista plástica. Propõe-se uma estrutura independente que, implantada no interior da construção existente, abriga os programas de apoio às atividades de produção artística que se dão no vazio resultante deste procedimento. Essa nova estrutura, que mede 12x3m, é posicionada junto a uma das paredes laterais do galpão que a envolve e é construída com CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). Ela dispõe de uma estante ao longo de toda sua extensão e abriga depósito, banheiro e copa, além de um escritório no mezanino. Propõe-se, também, uma nova cobertura composta por tesouras em aço que configuram um lanternim longitudinal. . Le Muse Inquiete, Giardini della Biennale Room 2 - La Biennale during Fascism (1928-1945). The Cold War and the new world order (1947-1964) On 1 March 1927 La Biennale di Venezia appointed a new secretary general, the Florentine sculptor and art critic Antonio Maraini. In 1928 Maraini inaugurated the Biennale’s archives at the Palazzo Ducale, transforming La Biennale di Venezia from a straightforward exhibition organiser to a cultural institution with many functions. This was part of a wider Fascist government plan for creating major cultural institutions showed the Fascist propensity to view the arts as a political propaganda tool. Maraini’s ambition was to make Venice an international art centre, a “Geneva of the arts”. To this end he invited new nations to build national pavilions in the Giardini, as the United States did in 1930. - The International Art Exhibition reopened in 1948 with an edition focusing on reconstruction; this was Europe’s first major international exhibition after World War Two and came seven years before Documenta, the famous German contemporary art exhibition in Kassel. 1948 was the year of the first solo exhibition by then 67-year-old Pablo Picasso, an artist who had never previously exhibited at the Biennale. Peggy Guggenheim came to Venice and brought her collection to the Greek pavilion, showing not only exceptional modern art from Europe but also new American abstract artists. - The displays are designed based on a few materials and elements: unpainted frames and tables in plywood composed together with colored textile and out of scale black and white prints of photos and documents sourced from the archives of La Biennale. Aprendí siendo estudiante y luego me enseñó a ser profesor — roles que se fueron diluyendo y solapando con mi práctica dentro y fuera del aula. Hoy en día pienso que no existe diferencia entre ambos espacios, y que la obra de arte puede existir como un proyecto formativo. Viendo hacia atrás, al @taller.x lo celebro como un espacio experimental que me dio la Libertad para llevar a cabo una investigación alejada de los protocolos académicos, más cercana al hacer creativo. Today, Kunsthalle Lingen is opening the exhibition “Grundrisse” with our artist Susa Templin. The complex work “Liquid Crystal Labyrinth” is a photo installation, whose transparent image carriers hang from the ceiling, creating a luminous atmosphere of light and colour. The artist, working with analogue photography, seemingly deconstructs and distorts photographed space with a multiple exposure technique and thereby creates new abstract spaces, reminiscent of memories. The exhibition brings together both Donald Judd’s furniture and drawings along with a selection of pieces he collected and lived with in his homes and studios. In his essay from 1993, “It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp,” Judd stated, “The configuration and the scale of art cannot be transposed into furniture and architecture. The intent of art is different from that of the latter, which must be functional. If a chair or a building is not functional, if it appears to be only art, it is ridiculous. The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness, and scale as a chair. Clock (left) is part of Philippe Parreno’s new body of work begun in 2019. It consists of a transparent Plexiglas Clock with three hands animated by a complex mechanism of gears and belts controlled by a DMX recorder. The work highlights the importance of time in the artist’s oeuvre. In recent years, Parreno has introduced the motif of a clock in several of his works and exhibitions: from the projection of a clock on a screen that gave time in-between films (Synchronicity, Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, 2017) to an installation of screen prints with phosphorescent ink titled Fade to Black (The Clock). Iceman in Reality Park (1995-2019) (right), is a manifestation originally created for the 1995 group show Ripple Across the Water in Tokyo. The work reappears twenty-five years later. The ice sculpture of a snowman is displayed on a plinth and melts over the course of a few days. It leaves behind the stones that were once embedded in the ice. The amplified sound of dripping water echoes throughout the exhibition space. Gabriel Kuri 1970, Mexico City Focusing on the objects and space that mediate human relationships, Gabriel Kuri explores the potential for transformation latent in familiar situations when observed from an unconventional angle. Playing with the principles of minimalism and the history of consumption, he integrates elements of everyday life into sculptures and collages. Residues of human interactions —plastic bags, advertising flyers, receipts, and tickets— are brought together with stones, coins, and cigarette butts, as well as industrial materials, such as cement, brushed steel, and insulation rolls. Kuri draws the viewer’s attention to the dynamic and unstable space at the intersection of two opposite concepts: in the precarious and yet precise meeting of the unexpected. The creation of systems is at the base of his artistic practice, ordering different elements until certain patterns begin to emerge and new semantic connections are generated between existing forms and their uses. Often accompanied by idioms and vernacular phrases, his pieces invite a multilayered dialogue between the verbal and the visual. He questions the given tenets of contemporary culture, through poetic juxtapositions and hybrid objects that rethink the mundane and find the eloquent and the extraordinary in daily life. - @alice_heart_uniforms on Instagram

After months in and of suspense, the exhibition that the CCA in Montreal has set up is finally up and running. They have confronted our work with the work of Rural Urban Framework, and it is the most rewarding encounter. Combining contexts as diverse as China, Mongolia, Albania and Belgium, suddenly a whole set of similarities and common approaches arise: an agenda of adaptation, working with people and strategic interventions, across scales, integrating social and ecological aspects, connecting university and practice. It is surprising to see how the architectural adaptation of a Ger (a Mongolian hut) can have so much in common with the adaptive reuse of the office towers of the World Trade Center in Brussels.
