As we make a push for equality, we must remember areas where we also have privilege. According to our most recent census, the transgender population in our country is over 10,000 people strong, and that’s just the people with ID cards. The real number is likely to be much higher. A 2016 report found that a majority of this population earns less than PKR10,000 a month. Transgenders in Pakistan are denied healthcare, equal access to education and jobs, are actively persecuted and are rendered invisible in our social structure. They are sidelined, ridiculed, harassed, sexually abused and completely unprotected and unseen by our law enforcement. It is vital that we stand shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan’s transgender community as we push for equality, safety, a decrease in sexual harassment and access to jobs and healthcare. We know that there is no gain from national development if it leaves a segment of the population behind. We must now make sure that as we take back some of the power that has been snatched from us, that we are leaving no one behind. Foodservice and hospitality industry advocacy group Restaurants Canada commended the Federal Government for committing to continue to provide relief to people and businesses as long as the pandemic lasts in its Throne Speech this past week. One of those relief measures was acting upon Restaurants Canada’s recommendation to extend the Canada Emergency Wage subsidy to help ensure hardworking restaurant owners will be able to keep their operations going and workers employed. In a press release, Restaurants Canada credited measures that the Feds have introduced since the start of the COVID-19 crisis for helping to keep the vast majority of restaurants operational and contributing to their communities during the COVID-19 crisis. However, it also cautioned that without continued and additional support, another 40 per cent of independent restaurants might not survive until March 2021. “While we recognize the significant support that the federal government has provided during the early days of this pandemic, the reality is that any subsequent waves during the colder months will have a devastating impact on the foodservice industry and could wipe out the tenuous path to recovery our sector has worked so hard to build,” the press release read. This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. On the night of August 25th, someone purposely set the University of Delaware Chabad ablaze. Chabad is pillar of Jewish life on campuses and for one to be burnt down is just unthinkable. ⁣A gynecologist performed hysterectomies on detained migrants without their full consent, according to Dawn Wooten, a nurse who filed a whistleblower complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General on Monday.⠀ ⠀ Wooten, who worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, said in her complaint that the number of hysterectomies — invasive operations that remove all or part of the uterus — was a red flag. Today, August 9, is World Indigenous Day. These defenders of the planet and wildlife should be cherished and thanked for everything because they make our lives much easier. However, they are often put at risk by the fault of the big polluters, who not only put in a big danger the plant and animal life in the area, but also human life. Many heavy metal or even radioactive mines can affect the surrounding ecosystem extremely strongly, and people in the area can be made to exploit these depleting resources, also being paid extremely little. One such case is in Jaduguda, India, where a large amount of uranium is being mined. Another case is in Nigeria, where a community of indigenous people has protested against the company @chevron . This company has violated many of the human rights, endangering the lives of the inhabitants of the area. How do indigenous people help us? They are protectors of over 80% of life on the planet, protectors of most oxygen producers on Earth and generally present in wild, relatively hostile environments. Without them, we would most likely not have the same standard of living that we have at the moment, so lets cherish what we have because of these people and thank them at least once a year for their uninterrupted work. The attack took place on 14th of September, following which there were series of procedural lapses, including delay in FIR being delayed. The victim was not provided with adequate medical attention, that her serious injuries needed. The victim succumbed to her injuries, but before succumbing she identified the accused and the nature of assault. If We Do Not Rise strongly condemns the UP police inhumanely going against the parents wishes to take their daughters mortal remains back to their home one last time. In the early hours of September 27, 2020, Azerbaijani forces launched an arial attack on civilian villages in Artsakh, province of Armenia, causing several civilian and military casualties. They say kindness is magic and can change the world. Parul Dua (@_raysofhappiness_) decided to sprinkle some of this magic around. Earlier this year, Parul began serving sherbat to construction workers, maids and her watchman, to help them combat the heat. She soon met their children and decided to help them with their education. Parul started by teaching them basics and giving them stationery. Over time, she noticed that these kids were fast learners and extremely enthusiastic. She began to push them; they learnt about the importance of Independence Day and she gave them different kinds of books to study and read. From helping each of them with the English language to sponsoring the complete education of two children in her class, Parul has showcased how one person can make a change. Besides teaching, Parul gave her students soaps and masks during the lockdown because safety first. Her next goal is to set up a parent-teacher meeting so that she can communicate the importance of regular attendance and education. An Extinction Rebellion protester proved a catwalk surprise at Paris Fashion Week when they gatecrashed the Christian Dior show and unfurled a sign that read We Are All Fashion Victims”. Reuters reports that a spokesman for the movement in France said the protest was designed to highlight “the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and society. Ma è qui che arriva la cosa interessante e potete vederla scorrendo le immagini: lufficio comunicazione della rivista si è procurata il mio indirizzo e mi ha scritto per dirmi tre cose semplici: che il commento è stato cancellato, che lautore è stato segnalato e che tutti loro erano molto dispiaciuti che io lo avessi dovuto leggere. Immaginate il mio stupore. In questi anni di hatespeech, bodyshaming e minacce non è mai accaduto che un recensore, un editore, un festival o una direzione di giornale abbiano fatto questo semplice gesto di pulizia e distanziamento davanti a qualcuno che metteva in atto lhatespeech. Quello che succede in Italia è invece il contrario: ogni settimana un hater scrive su di me e altre autrici post, tweet e articoli dello stesso tenore di quel messaggio, ma poiché ha nome e cognome e recensisce libri su un quotidiano, non solo non viene allontanato, ma conta tra i suoi followers su FB e TW molte persone che conosco e stimo. Editori (pure miei), editor (pure miei), giornalisti culturali, scrittori (pure amici miei), librai e direzioni di premi. Gente che vede quei commenti e tace. Gente che non crede che lodio e la misoginia siano un problema culturale di cui un sistema culturale dovrebbe farsi carico. When we sold Good Fortune this summer we took with us some of the very special treasures including this shrimp sign. We look forward to this finding a new home in our next build. So many of furnishing and decorations in our homes have a story. This shrimp sign originally hung outside a fishery on the way to Apalachicola. Will and I had passed it on several occasions and just loved it. During one trip to eat lunch at Up the Creek Raw Bar, we decided to stop, track down the owners and ask them if we could give this special piece of their family business a new home. Dale and Marty agreed and even kindly helped us load it onto the roof of our car. She said:⁣ ⁣ “I am a member of the Adolescent Girls Group known as Girl Power which is formed and supported by ActionAid. The facilitator of our group sent me a message to think of some creative ideas to raise awareness among the children of our community about the coronavirus.⁣ ⁣ “As I loved drawing and know that children really connect through images, I decided to make a story book for children. Initially I started to gather basic information about the ways of being safe from the coronavirus which small children could easily understand and then I started to convert them into images. It took me three days to complete the story book.⁣ ⁣ “This has really inspired me to make more story books for children. There may not have been the thousands of demonstrators seen at protests in Sweden, India, Germany and other countries around the world, but the group that gathered in Chapel Hill on a rainy Friday morning shared the same message: it’s time to act against climate change. Organized by Chapel Hill high schoolers to be part of the Global Day of Climate Action, the demonstration urged for institutions and the governments to prioritize changing climate injustice. Held for a second straight year, the group aimed to both raise awareness and call out inaction. Margot Francini helped lead the event and is involved with Earth Uprising, a youth-led organization advocating for action to stop rising temperatures across the globe. She said holding the protest on Friday, rain or shine, was important to show solidarity with others speaking out against climate change. “We want to make sure the voices of the Chapel Hill youth are heard,” said Francini, “and that we’re in coalition with the other sister strikes across the world. Those farmworkers include children toiling for 12 hours a day at 85 percent the amount of money that adults get paid. Many farmworkers do not get lunch and rest breaks and are subjected to terrible housing conditions. Hoping to rectify these issues, farmworkers in the United States and in Mexico have been on a three-year-long fight to get Driscolls — the world’s largest berry distributor — to recognize their unions so that they could have better working and living conditions. Ramon Torres, a 31-year-old Mexican immigrant, is one of the people leading the fight to unionize. As the president of the independent farmworker union Families United for Justice (FUJ), he has been picking berries since he was 18 years old. His most recent employer was the Washington state-based Sakuma Bros. Farms, which supplies its products through the Driscoll’s label. Through the years, Torres has seen and experienced many hardships, like wage theft, lack of rest breaks, and cramped housing conditions. By law, his employer has to provide housing for migrant farmworkers like Torres. But the cabins often hold three times as many people as they should. About 1,500 miles away at another Driscolls-operated farm in San Quintin, Mexico that’s packaged through the BerryMex label, Gloria Gracida Martinez, a former farmworker and the spokesperson for their farmworker-led union La Alianza, has seen similar instances of poor working conditions crop up. Driscoll’s partnership with BerryMex and MoraMex yielded 25 million flats of strawberries to the U.S. in 2014, The Nation reported. But for all that the companies have monetized in Mexico’s $550 million annual berry harvest revenue, Mexican farmworkers aren’t seeing a comparable increase in their working and living conditions.
