La explosión en Beirut incendia Líbano. La explosión del puerto de Beirut, que todos hemos visto en vídeos en las redes sociales, ha destruido gran parte de la ciudad, hay miles de heridos y cientos de muertos y desaparecidos. Miles de toneladas de nitrato de amonio, acumuladas sin tener en cuenta la seguridad del pueblo, han traído uno de los mayores desastres del capitalismo reciente. Tras la explosión, se ha reavivado toda la movilización y lucha social del año pasado, paralizada parcialmente por la pandemia. Miles toman las calles, cientos son detenidos, el Gobierno incluso ha enviado al ejército. La clase obrera libanesa ha tomado numerosos edificios del Gobierno, entre ellos el de exteriores, donde ha establecido el Cuartel de la Revolución. Otra arma del régimen es el sectarismo religioso, el cuál es uno de los pilares de su estabilidad. Sabemos que hay problemas, incluso en estas movilizaciones con respecto a este sectarismo, pero un gran sector de los movilizados está superando esas barreras, defendiendo la unidad por encima de toda religión. Cócteles molotovs, barricadas, sogas en las calles, toda una rebelión popular, el estado ya no es el único que ejerce el monopolio sobre la violencia. No solo se trata de la explosión, sino del régimen podrido y sectario, del desempleo, de la inflación, de la inestabilidad en la región, del imperialismo acechante. Las masas ya han conseguido su primera victoria, echar al Gobierno. Aún así no es más que una maniobra desesperada del régimen, cambiar un gobierno por otro afín. Pero las masas los quieren a todos fuera. Las movilizaciones y la lucha se extenderán por todos los países árabes, empezando por Iraq que ya ha retomado las calles. Una victoria revolucionaria en Líbano, ahora mismo, supondría un faro de esperanza no solo para la clase trabajadora árabe, sino para la de todo el mundo. A duotone pattern of black & green sticking up like a church spire. Only a sleek outline of a home here. Greenery does wonders for the LA skyline, both artificial & organic. I like fumigation tents because for at least a few days, the home of one’s own is both there & not — Schrodinger’s houses. Whisked away to an AirBnB or relative’s, your house feels a sense of freedom, power, self-appreciation. I’ve read that a home is what YOU make of it. But what does the home make of itself? Begs the question: where do our homes go when we’re away? And, moreover, what parts of them leave? Is there a community of floorboards & glasspanes & rooftiles sitting, cross-legged, swilling Trader Joe’s Colombian dark roast from the well-worn mugs & chipped glassware that you delight in every morning? And how do they travel? By sawhorse? Does the plumbing come out of the woodwork & take turns burrowing toward the earth’s center, into the soil, like nightcrawlers, creating vast tunnel-networks for the toilets & crown-molding & smoke alarms? Do garden hoses spill their water into these passages, creating waterslides for the bits of home that decide to split? What does a ceiling fan’s giggle sound like? & does it laugh from the fan blades or the light kit? Or, do our homes even leave at all? Do they wait patiently for their people instead, a sense of loneliness looming in their doorjambs, awaiting the smell of grilled onions & roast yams & an uncorked cab? Are they comforted by the sounds of evening vacuuming? Do the pilot-lights glint just a little when two people come together to laugh? If there’s one thing that relationships & vacation have taught us, it’s that leaving is never easy. But given the right conditions, a strange twist of fate, and maybe a few loose 2x4s — perhaps we too can draw security from within ourselves while we’re under our covers, dreaming of playful worlds of color, our bones and skin and internal organs are hard at work, each passing moment of sweetening sleep a subconscious testament to one’s own strength to move on — a power drawn from deep appreciation for stepping boldly into one’s Converse, and making our bodies, those god-given houses, a home. - @fumigationcircus on Instagram

Over 300k lebanese are left homeless. Hospitals cant help everyone and the city doesnt have 24 hours of electricity to keep hospitals going! People were already beginning to starve prior to this incident, and now they are in a much worse position. 100% of donations will be used to feed families DIRECTLY AFFECTED by the explosions in Beirut to help keep them going, as well as buying basic clothing for those who lost theirs with their homes. We have relatives that will be buying the food and driving through Beirut looking for families in dire need of instant help. We feel like this is the best way we can use the donations in order to avoid ANYONE profiting a single cent  and having the donations go directly, swiftly and COMPLETELY to those in need. And even still, with everything that is currently happening it is clear that the “freedom” we have experienced has been mostly symbolic. there is still much work to be done on the path to realizing our true freedom and liberation from the tyranny of global racism and white supremacy. They say kindness is magic and can change the world. Parul Dua (@_raysofhappiness_) decided to sprinkle some of this magic around. Earlier this year, Parul began serving sherbat to construction workers, maids and her watchman, to help them combat the heat. She soon met their children and decided to help them with their education. Parul started by teaching them basics and giving them stationery. Over time, she noticed that these kids were fast learners and extremely enthusiastic. She began to push them; they learnt about the importance of Independence Day and she gave them different kinds of books to study and read. From helping each of them with the English language to sponsoring the complete education of two children in her class, Parul has showcased how one person can make a change. Besides teaching, Parul gave her students soaps and masks during the lockdown because safety first. Her next goal is to set up a parent-teacher meeting so that she can communicate the importance of regular attendance and education. Durante lo que va de este año, en Argentina hemos sido testigos del atropellamiento social que es capaz de ejercer el sector de producción extractivista. Por supuesto que cuando se presentan hechos como este, tanto el gobierno municipal, provincial y nacional, como así también los responsables de ejercer el poder judicial, no deben mirar para otro lado, ya que son quienes tienen el deber de cuidar a la población. Contrariamente, este año, confirmamos rotundamente que estas personas son tan responsables como el empresariado ejecutor: no les importa el bienestar popular y arrasan con naturaleza, salud, y vida, sin remordimientos. Es por esto que no nos sorprendimos en estos días cuando nos enteramos que el gobierno nacional planea modificar la Ley de Bosques, para que la misma sea menos restrictiva y así poder continuar arrasando con la mayor cantidad de hectáreas de vida posible. Hace tiempo que, excusándose con la reactivación de la economía, desde estos sectores de poder no dan lugar a discusiones que tienen como objetivo el verdadero cuidado del pueblo, a partir de actividades de generación de dinero federales e integrales, que verdaderamente podrían generar un cambio en el porcentaje de pobreza nacional y en la preservación de la salud pública. The facilitator of our group sent me a message to think of some creative ideas to raise awareness among the children of our community about the coronavirus.⁣ ⁣ “As I loved drawing and know that children really connect through images, I decided to make a story book for children. Initially I started to gather basic information about the ways of being safe from the coronavirus which small children could easily understand and then I started to convert them into images. Hassan Jangju, meaning Hassan the Warrior in Persian language, was an Iranian member of Basij, a volunteer paramilitary organization during the Iran–Iraq War, who became subject to an iconic photograph taken by Alfred Yaghobzadeh in 1981. The photo of Hassan Jangju childish face has been a symbol on the back cover of school books and his paintings on school walls for years. The same photo was used as propaganda for recruiting volunteers by the Iranian authorities during the Iran–Iraq war and afterwards. He was missed in action and his body was returned to Iran in 2017. the coffin of Hassan Jangju, which was draped in the Iranian flag, was borne through the streets by a huge crowd and laid to rest with full military honours. This morning I did my part by contacting my states representatives regarding evidence based policy and the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act that was introduced to congress last year. The coming months and years will be crucial in ensuring a safe pathway below 1.5°C increase in global mean temperature. If we are to minimize the risks of triggering irreversible chain reactions, we need to act now. It is therefore vital that the climate crisis doesn’t get forgotten in the shadow of the coronavirus. As society is starting to open up in many places in the world, global emissions and resource use is rapidly increasing and we are running out of time. Today I stand united with activists all over the globe for the first day of global climate action of 2020. The dust never really settles in Lebanon, at least not in the 33 years that I’ve been around. Civil war, a Syrian occupation, an Israeli occupation, assassination after assassination, the July war, Nahr El Bared, 7 Ayar, Assir, the garbage crisis, the electricity and water crisis, the credit crisis and finally the largest peacetime explosion in human history and these are just the highlights. But, this last explosion and its aftermath have laid bare for all to see what was previously only an academic conversation; that the Lebanese state is an illusion. We’ve been selling ourselves a lie just because our passport gets stamped at the airport that we’ve somehow entered a country. But, our borders are not demarcated, our laws are not universally applied, our army is a hodgepodge of confessional interests whose different components are beholden to sectarian warlords, our law enforcement officers are nothing more than drivers and coffee runners for their equally incompetent government officials. Our courts don’t meet the most basic standards of procedural propriety. In fact, every element that makes up a state has been systematically and intentionally dismantled to the point where citizens alone found themselves, until this very moment, responding to the single most catastrophic event in the nation’s history without hearing so much as a mournful word from a government official, or to see so much as an emergency tent erected by our so-called armed forces. The only state response to this cataclysm has been to add 700 more civilian injuries by employing criminal brutality against peaceful demonstrators in the defense of an empty parliament building. But now every single Lebanese has seen it for what it is. We, the people, have achieved more in the last 13 days than every single Lebanese politician has in the last 30 years and that’s how we’re going to build a nation that is much more than passport control at the airport. This was part of a coordinated attack which included @michaelrapaport who was harassing me in my comments and my DM’s and posting about me to his 2 million Instagram followers vowing that he would get me expelled. Rapaport was sentenced for harassing women before and attacked Ilhan Omar’s anti-Zionism as “smiley bullshit.” He fed this narrative, and then deleted everything. The Act:il email uses the presence of jewish students on campus, (who released their own statement in support of me) to make false claims that they felt unsafe. At the same time, the app was also directing people to try to shut down the @amedstudies event with Leila Khaled, and had zoom cancel the event. This manufactured outrage is used as a tool to try to fool people into thinking these false narratives are a reality. 💔 The struggle in Lebanon for designers and the design sector as a whole has been long and arduous already. The recent and massive devaluation of the Lebanese pound has made it impossible for designers to be able to afford the inflated costs demanded for materials, and the state of the economy has further driven down the existing business for local design, forcing galleries to close. Designers have few places to exhibit, and little to show in any case. Combined, the effect has been to generate significant hardships for everyone within the sector. On August 4th in Beirut, Lebanese creatives lost their studios and saw their homes devastated. We need to start by helping them return to basics – by reequipping them and providing them with the means to work. Myself and together with you must continue to provide support by identifying global opportunities through which their work and their message will find greater exposure around the world. For sure, there is no better – nor more urgent – a time for patrons and the design community to come together to breathe life into the sector in order to keep it alive and to release Lebanese talent and creativity. El Acuerdo de Escazú – nombre proveniente de la ciudad donde fue adoptado – cumple la función de vincular a los países en su rol de garantes de Derechos Humanos. Este acuerdo entiende que la vida se desarrolla sobre la tierra y que para que cualquier forma de vida prospere, necesita de un medioambiente sano sobre el cual cultivarla. Experts have highlighted three main reasons for Italy’s resilience.⁠ ⁠ 👉 First-mover advantage⁠ As one of the first countries to face a high number of cases and deaths, Italy’s government and health system have had more time to plan a post-lockdown response and the lifting of restrictions has been more gradual ⁠ ⁠ 👉 High public compliance and stricter enforcement⁠ Compared with places such as the UK, Italy has a higher public acceptance of restrictions such as compulsory mask wearing in shops. Visitors to bars and restaurants also leave their names and numbers, making tracking cases easier.⁠ ⁠ 👉 Effective testing and monitoring⁠ ‘Once there is a positive we test all those who may have come into contact with them. One week ago I wrapped my last day at @we.are.alight - and it’s taken several days (and I’m sure many more) to wrap my mind around the bigness of this moment. The past almost 6 years have been one wild, wondrous, action-packed, joy-filled, and sometimes incredibly challenging adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working on issues close to my heart and sharing the stories of so many different wonderful people I’ve met along the way, who have made navigating those challenges worth it and then some.
