Breaking: John Lewis, lion of civil rights and Congress, dies at 80. John Lewis, a champion of the civil rights movement whose bloody beating by Alabama state troopers in 1965 helped galvanize opposition to racial segregation, and who went on to a long and celebrated career in Congress, died. He was 80. Lewis was the last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was best known for leading 600 protesters in the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Lewis was knocked to the ground and beaten by state troopers. Televised images forced the countrys attention on racial oppression. Systemic Racism, also known as Structural Racism, has made it so that black children and other children in low-income and minority groups have less of an opportunity to succeed from the moment they begin schooling. One of the most important steps in eradicating Systemic Racism will be providing these children with better education, which leads to better opportunity in life and decreases the chances that they will become imprisoned later in life. To achieve this, our beliefs and morals must align with our ultimate goal. I will be starting a book club by months end that covers both morality and equality. The man you see in this photo with the bloodstains on his sport coat at this time, was still, even then, more popular than someone such as @postmalone is today. At this point in his career, Miles Davis had released a few dozen more albums than our boy Posty has to date. Anyway, Miles is doing a 2 week residence at a legendary jazz club called Birdland in Manhattan. His biggest, and thee most popular jazz album of ALL time was just released the previous week, so they were playing some new material, and for the first time, he was gigging with the first white musician to be his band. Good vibes. On the last 3 photos, Miles tells the story of this incident in his own words 30 years later. Marines are no effing joke so I like to think Reggie lost his life in Vietnam fighting for love of his country even though his country wasn’t loving him. But he was 21 which seems so young. We believe in heroes. We believe in mentors. Mike Tysons mentor was an old Italian iconoclast and genius, Cus DAmato. Mentors give advice for life. But, every great life starts by mastering the day. Under Cus tutelage, a typical training camp day for Tyson was as follows. CALISTHENIC ROUTINE 200 sit-ups, 50 dips, 50 push-ups & 50 shrugs with weight – 10 times throughout a day, six days a week. DAILY SCHEDULE AT TRAININIG CAMP(FOUR TO FIVE WEEKS BEFORE A FIGHT) 4:00 a.m.: get up and go for a three to five mile jog. 6:00 a.m.: come back home, shower, and go back to bed. 10:00 a.m.: wake up and eat breakfast (Oatmeal with fruit, OJ, and vitamins, washed down with a protein shake.) 12pm: ten rounds of sparring and three sets of Calisthenics. 2pm: lunch (carbs, protein, veggies, and water.) 3pm: another four to six rounds of sparring, bag work, slip bag, jump rope, Willie bag, focus mits, and speed bag (Cus was never fond of the speed bag) and 60 minutes on the stationary bike. Three more sets of Calisthenics. 5pm: Four more sets of the same calisthenic routine and then slow shadow boxing or focusing on ONE technique, in order to master the mechanics. 7pm: another balanced meal, usually prepared by Steve Lott. 8pm: a light 30 minutes on the exercise bike for recovery purposes only. NO RESISTANCE. 9pm: watch TV or study fight films and then go to bed. Cumulative reps for the day = 2000 decline sit-ups, 500 bench dips, 500 push-ups, 500 shrugs with a 30 kg barbell, and ten minutes of neck exercises in the ring. As the purpose for the blackout is to center Black voices, we carry on with this event to especially center one of our Emerging Documentary Artists, Anthony Patterson (@signedbyap).⠀ ⠀ Anthony’s final project with experimental filmmaker @vonnie_quest, “Here for a Reason,” will be a portrait of the Crest Street Community, a “small, yet powerful, historically Black neighborhood on the west side of Durham, North Carolina.” With a combination of interviews, artwork, and archival media, “Here for a Reason” captures the stories of growing up in the Crest Street Community, and also reveals how Crest Street maintained community cohesion in the face of displacement from Urban Renewal.⠀ ⠀ If you are able, please join us tomorrow evening, June 3 at 7 p.m. to celebrate Anthony and his work. I’m heartbroken to learn of the passing of Congressman John Lewis. He was a civil rights giant, who literally shed his blood in the fight for justice in America. I am honored to have served with Mr. Lewis in Congress and as a fellow member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and to have traveled to Selma, Alabama this past March to walk arm and arm with him over the Edmond Pettus Bridge. I will be, and every American should be, forever inspired and influenced to finish the work that he began. Last night America lost a true giant. John Lewis was not only a hero in the civil rights movement, he was also one of the kindest, most noble souls I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. He was a pillar of humility and moral courage throughout his long life of service. History will never forget how he stood against the forces of racism and bigotry and how he countered those forces with love, hope, and an affection for his fellow man. Remember this day, always Monday April 14, 2014 and Tuesday September 11, 2001 are days of shock. Humanity stood still as the gates of death opened. Evil unleashed its horror, incomprehensible to the sane mind. What is this? Muslims asked. From Jeddah to Cairo and elsewhere. What is this?Americans asked. What is this? Christians asked. That world we knew had changed. We thought we knew the world, but that one - the world - that we knew was within the space of imagination. It died already. A new era rose on its carcass. It caught humanity unawares. It hit humanity. The pain lives still. A war began. Revenge, retaliation. I tell you what September 11 should represent. It should be a rallying spot in history for Muslims, Christians and others to fight Islamic fundamentalism and indeed fundamentalism of any kind. Man was not made for religion, religion is made for man. It must not hurt relationships neither must it replace reasoning. The first men were godly without a religion. In the end, God might be forced to utter not in my name. Humanity must trump religion now, and always. No death should happen for faith reasons. Man must live in freedom always; without the fear of death. Humanity must breath. The future awaits our victory. The future, therefore, must not belong to those who would kill a fellow human merely for the utterances he has made. Whoever murdered another man, only him should be killed by the hands of the law and not the mob. Only the law is authorised to kill the murderer, not the mob. Only the rule of law-unshackled by religious dogma and untainted by inordinate legal manipulations. Never the prejudice of the powerful, or the blind sentiments of the fanatic. Humanity must be free to choose, like God has implanted in us the ability of choice. Take away that fundamental freedom, and watch as you strip away the very essence of what makes us humans.
