Last night America lost a true giant. John Lewis was not only a hero in the civil rights movement, he was also one of the kindest, most noble souls I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. He was a pillar of humility and moral courage throughout his long life of service. History will never forget how he stood against the forces of racism and bigotry and how he countered those forces with love, hope, and an affection for his fellow man. May God bless the life of John Lewis and continue to bless his family during this difficult time. - @reptedyoho on Instagram

I’m absolutely disgusted. Disgusted at the racist white police using their power over these innocent people and take their lives and get away with it. Shit needs to be sorted. Black people in America shouldn’t be living in fear that they’re life could end just for walking to the shop, going for a jog, being on their phone, just breathing... just living their life. I can’t comprehend why people believe they’re better than others because of the difference in skin. It’s fucking disgusting and absolute stupidity. These past couple days I have been reading the stories of people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Abbery and many others and it’s just heartbreaking. It happens EVERYDAY and these murderers get away with it unless someone’s catching it on camera. RIP George Floyd. collage art created by me @marthacamilleart - @marthacamillee on Instagram

We’re reminded of the late @repjohnlewis every day, but especially today as his quote, “The vote is precious” is of paramount importance now more than ever. With just 37 days until the #PresidentialElection, this Tuesday is Georgias 5th Congressional District Special Election to fill Rep. John Lewis’ seat. The elected official will serve the remainder of Lewis’ term through January 3, 2021. The legendary civil rights leader dedicated his life to advancing human rights. In the last few years of his life, he worked tirelessly to get the Voting Rights Advancement Act enacted into law as a way to guarantee every American’s right to vote. 🎨 @rickfrausto #TheRoadToNovember3 #CountdownToVote #WeUseOurVoices, Use Yours - @rractioncommittee on Instagram

Troy Davis was executed in Georgia nine years ago. There was so much evidence pointing to Troy’s innocence. The courts and other decision-makers disregarded all of it. On the morning of his scheduled execution, Troy shared this message with the world: “The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davis’s who came before me and all the ones who will come after me.” We remember you, Troy, and we continue the fight to end the death penalty. #troydavis #iamtroydavis #racialinjustice #deathpenalty #deathrow #endthedeathpenalty #georgia #innocenceproject #innocence - @lapubdefunion on Instagram

Documentary film is a critical art form to help us make sense of our shared history, especially when our current political climate threatens to roll back hard won civil rights. SFFILM is a gathering place to watch these films, and hear from the filmmakers and subjects firsthand. Last week, we hosted an event for our members to discuss the new documentary JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE from director and longtime SFFILM mentor Dawn Porter. Together with our partners at Covington, Dawn and former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder discussed the work and legacy of Representative John Lewis whose message of getting in good trouble could not be more urgent. Minneapolis is in a moment of imagination! This is one way we’re engaging community! We have the opportunity to create the communities we want! Ask your city officials to make divestment commitments to their budgets! We already have organizations who do the work the police say they do but fail at - which is to serve and protect our communities! Support @blackvisionscollective and @reclaimtheblock for leadership in this work! : : 2) Arrest, charge and convict all four officers involved in the murder of George Floyd! Will Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital Divorce? By Peter White NASHVILLE, TN — There is plenty of blame to go around. Mayor Megan Barry’s budget and the city council that approved it, only gave General Hospital $35 million of the $55 million it needed. That was last May. Since then, the marriage between Meharry and Nashville General Hospital went South. The medical school’s residents have trained at General for twenty-three years and the hospital has provided the patients to treat them. Shortly after attempts to increase General’s subsidy failed, Dr. Jan Brandes, Hospital Authority chair, met with Meharry’s CEO, James E.K. Hildreth, to discuss the imminent cutbacks at General. The meeting didn’t go well.Read more at tntribune.com - @thetennesseetribune on Instagram

The March on Washington was a peaceful protest. It got the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, and led to the Selma Voting Rights Movement and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Let us *please* seek REAL justice for Floyd, and any other person who has been a victim of abuses of power. The only way to do this is by changing laws, raising money, winning the culture war and coming together as a COMMUNITY, not 🔥burning communities and inciting more hatred and violence. Violence, no matter how you attempt to justify it, only begets more violence. . This is not what “justice” looks like. Yet white kids on social media keep cheering on riots like a fashion trend for peer-group cool points, completely out of touch with real life consequences for people like this black man. Who will clean up the flaming rubble of people’s houses and POC businesses across our already divided country? We just leave the mess for our brothers and sisters to deal with, and leave many of them hospitalized? How does hurting your own team “teach the cops a lesson?” What does real change look like? Well, consider raising money for this guy (second photo) Korboi Balla on GoFundMe to pay back the damages, and volunteer to go clean all those cities. It’s the right thing to do- rather than the “trendy” thing. - @lancecourtney on Instagram

🔥You don’t always have to talk about what you’re up to. Let your results speak for you. Let your actions speak for you. Social media doesn’t always need to know about your grinding and hustle. People WILL KNOW about it when they see your RESULTS. It’s the one thing you can’t fake. There’s a lot of fake people out there… Talking a lot of crap about who they are and what they’ve accomplished… but one thing you can never fake… is RESULTS. Be that person. The one who delivers. Not the talker. Not the statement maker. The RESULT MAKER. Confuse them with your silence and shock them with your RESULTS! Under talk. Over deliver. There’s a saying: When you build in silence… they don’t know what to attack. Don’t let the haters get a chance to attack you before you’ve done anything. Build in silence and shock them with your end result. You must know the RESULTS will come if you get your head down and work. You do not need to tell everyone what you’re up to or who you think you’re going to be. Just show them. THE RESULTS WILL COME IF YOU GET YOUR HEAD DOWN AND WORK. Your work ethic will show in your RESULTS. Your hustle will show in your RESULTS. Your ability will show in your RESULTS. Your GREATNESS will show in your RESULTS. Ive always had a disdain for instagram. It is a necessity in my line of work, almost like your own mini PR company if utilised properly. But the past few years Instagram has been attracting more and more tone deafness. It has felt acutely more arrogant. Hence why Ive shied away from it. How can you project your picture perfect life when you know how many are suffering and striving to live equally across the planet? But over the last few days my opinion has changed. Ive seen how powerful a tool it can be when used as a tool of protest. The outpouring from everyone has been so moving, this time something does feel different. I hope that is true. If this is the modern way to protest and in these challenging COVID times; we can all protest safely, away from police presence and law breaking. Most importantly we can protest in a way that can stay online forever, for those in power to see over and over again. That is immensely powerful. I’m heartbroken to learn of the passing of Congressman John Lewis. He was a civil rights giant, who literally shed his blood in the fight for justice in America. I am honored to have served with Mr. Lewis in Congress and as a fellow member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and to have traveled to Selma, Alabama this past March to walk arm and arm with him over the Edmond Pettus Bridge. I will be, and every American should be, forever inspired and influenced to finish the work that he began. “We have cultivated something unique, beyond calculation. The city couldn’t predict what would blossom inside the womb of a district it planned on pushing black and brown people away from. Who could predict that the birth pangs of the coming economic boom would actually be in part due to black culture? Who could predict that the very same people who weren’t allowed to live and buy property on this land in the past could now actually generate revenue from their LLCs and entrepreneurship due to that very same migration of implants? At first glance, much may appear grim but these are growing pains so let’s not convolute this message: The city needs us more than we need the city.” ⠀ __⠀ Written in 2016 by hip-hop artist, writer and activist @glennwaco. Fisk University joins the world in mourning the loss of Congressman Lewis, as well as honoring his legacy and commitment to justice and nonviolence. John Robert Lewis, beloved Civil Rights Leader, Congressman, and Fisk Graduate, Class of 1967, will forever be a part of the Fisk University Fabric. As a Fisk University student, Congressman John Lewis served as President of the Nashville Student Non-Violent Movement and stood at the forefront of sit-in protests in Nashville. Congressmen Lewis never allowed his focus on Social Justice, Equality, and Civil Rights to be stunted by the racism and discrimination that he and others experienced. Instead, he reached high as a leader, leaving a most impressive, barrier-breaking, and inspiring legacy in America. Systemic Racism, also known as Structural Racism, has made it so that black children and other children in low-income and minority groups have less of an opportunity to succeed from the moment they begin schooling. One of the most important steps in eradicating Systemic Racism will be providing these children with better education, which leads to better opportunity in life and decreases the chances that they will become imprisoned later in life. To achieve this, our beliefs and morals must align with our ultimate goal. I will be starting a book club by months end that covers both morality and equality. As different institutions and folx participate in #blackouttuesday today and onward, #CDSCourses and the CDS communications team have made the decision to move forward with an event scheduled for tomorrow night, a virtual celebration of our CDS Courses Certificate in Documentary Arts Graduate Presentation. As the purpose for the blackout is to center Black voices, we carry on with this event to especially center one of our Emerging Documentary Artists, Anthony Patterson (@signedbyap).⠀ ⠀ Anthony’s final project with experimental filmmaker @vonnie_quest, “Here for a Reason,” will be a portrait of the Crest Street Community, a “small, yet powerful, historically Black neighborhood on the west side of Durham, North Carolina.” With a combination of interviews, artwork, and archival media, “Here for a Reason” captures the stories of growing up in the Crest Street Community, and also reveals how Crest Street maintained community cohesion in the face of displacement from Urban Renewal.⠀ ⠀ If you are able, please join us tomorrow evening, June 3 at 7 p.m. to celebrate Anthony and his work. This photograph was taken roughly a year from today and ever since it was exposed and printed in the darkroom, I often found myself revisiting it time and time again for reasons unknown. ⁣ ⁣ This photograph is what sparked a turning point in my documentary photography and opened up a plethora of new subject matters for me to take on and also inspired the creation of my final years thesis project. ⁣ ⁣ It’s amazing how much can be stirred up from one photograph. ⁣ ⁣ #STUDYYOUROWNWORK - @bidemioloyede on Instagram

This newspaper cartoon was trying to humorously depict what I needed to do to be safe leaving my home after a friend and I were taken down at gunpoint by police. The shock of seeing that many guns trained on us, caused me to turn to my friend who had recently graduated from the same university to ask, are you wanted?. Incredulous, he looked wide eyed back at me and said ``No, are you?. We couldnt fathom what would warrant this many police cars and every officer on scene with gun drawn At one point handcuffed lying face down with my nose on streetcar tracks I turned my head to ask my friend if he was okay and the angry officer told us to shut the F.... up. I could hear the disappointment in their voices when all they could find in my car was my friends takeout chicken and fries. We were scared and confused and one wrong move on our part could have led to us being shot. Ive been thinking about the takedown this week and I am grateful we both escaped with our lives. We know so many others didn’t. You dont need to live in black skin to understand how horrific it is to watch the life forced out of another human being by the person society has appointed to protect them. I told my 13 year old I thought we were bringing her into a better world than my generation grew up in but I fear that is not the case. My 18 year old has inherited the activist streak and it will serve her well if she realizes her goal of becoming a lawyer. Its been a tough week. - @dwight_drummond on Instagram

2/1/20- DAY 1 BLACK HISTORY MONTH. As I reflect on the last decade, I’m reminded that as much as things have changed, things have remained the same. Black people are still being oppressed. Black men and women are being murdered and violated at an alarming rate by police. The police are suppose to protect and serve but operate more like “slave patrols”. I challenge White people to use their white privilege to dismantle the system of oppression that their ancestors built. I challenge Black people to support each other, to buy Black, run for office, become lawyers, police, judges, politicians, sheriffs to fight this system from within by having a seat at the table. We must make sure our faces are seen and voices heard!! Representation matters!! ⠀ ⠀ I made this silkscreen print in 2013 @tanawoodland to support the Trayvon 2, two men deeply committed to the lifelong struggle for Black liberation, and one who was an immensely important professor of mine at the time. They were targeted and faced with felony charges during protests that flourished in Oakland following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who murdered young Trayvon Martin and walked away with absolutely no charge or consequence. ⠀ ⠀ This took place 7 years ago, and we see the same distracting discussions debating the relative value of property or human life today... the same struggles seeking justice for those murdered at the hands of white supremacists who find safety and impunity in the systems and institutions that this country depends on to continue its foundational abuse of human life and spirit...⠀ ⠀ Considering the continued relevancy of their words and actions in support of Trayvon in 2013, Im making a limited number of 12 x 18 digital prints available for purchase for those looking for very direct and effective ways to financially support the ongoing and immensely important work of revolutionaries and scholars who truly operate at the grassroots level without institutional financial support. ⠀ ⠀ Shipping costs will be covered, so every dollar you donate will go directly to this fund to support @milestonesjournal, an important and independent media platform for which the Trayvon 2 are regular contributors and organizers.⠀ ⠀ **** To purchase, please indicate that you would like one in the comments below and choose an amount to send (suggested $30 and upwards) via venmo to @kara_luna or cashapp at $karaluna3. Be sure to include your full name and address in the private comments along with your purchase. If you do not use either of these apps, contact me directly and we will figure out a different way. ****⠀ ⠀ Prints will be shipped next week.⠀ ⠀ For those looking to learn more and donate but are not interested in a print, please see their recent fundraiser:⠀ ⠀ https://tinyurl.com/milestonescommentary - @karaluna_designs on Instagram

The Georgia Conservancy, along with millions this morning, mourns the loss of Representative John Lewis - Civil Rights hero, community leader, and U.S. Congressman from Georgias 5th District. His legacy of doing what is right will continue to have a lasting impact - not only on Georgia but on our nation. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, staff, and colleagues. - Representative Lewis, a recipient of the Georgia Conservancys Distinguished Conservationist Award, was a champion of our nations natural resources and one the strongest defenders of the environment to ever hold seat in Congress. - “When we take our air, waters and land for granted; when we show a simple lack of respect for nature and our environment, we unmake God’s good creation. Humanity is the most important endangered species under threat from climate change and yet we flood our ecology with poisons and pollution. It is my belief that our country needs better environmental protections and that real protections do not have to come at the expense of jobs or our economy. Whatever we do to the earth, we do to each other. - Rest in Power John Lewis - #johnlewis #hero - @gaconservancy on Instagram

Each year on Sept 21 — the date that Marcos declared Martial Law in the Philippines in the 70s — we honor the lives of the people taken so unjustly by the Marcos regime during this time. We honor their resistance. We listen and we cry with our comrades and elders who endured this time, who lost someone, who survived past that terror. Each year we remember that the fight is not over— that de facto martial law persists and ravages the Philippines now under Duterte, whose shoot to kill policy is a mainstay in his approach to drugs, to COVID, and more. And every year, we grow stronger in strength and number as we call out, “Never Again to Martial Law!” Together with our comrades, we will bring down this regime and this system!
