However, this can sometimes look like: 🗣Instructing partners on how to do things with the kids. 🙋🏻♀️Taking over a baby/child task. 👎🏼 Lingering around 👀 when your partner has it! We do this because we are protective, & because we may think we are more in tune with our children than our partners. Keep in mind: your partner likely already does or knows to do these things above. Maternal gatekeeping is still telling them despite this. One reason that some partners are hesitant to jump in & take action is because they may be told how to do it, a better way, or spoken to in a way that suggests they don’t have any parental sense of awareness (e.g., don’t drive fast with the kids in the car). This is what we call maternal gatekeeping. It is where a mother’s protective beliefs lead to statements and behaviors that interfere with others’ involvement in the children’s lives. Studies have shown that early critical remarks, or gatekeeping, directly impacts a partner’s parenting quality and initiative later on. So mamas, you really can’t have it both ways. Frequently telling (or criticizing) your partner how to do things, and especially taking over when you see something happening differently from how you do it, undermines their confidence & reduces initiative. The better approach is: ✅Encouragement of your partner taking responsibility for activities, such as bathtime, diaper changes, meal time, etc. ✅When you see your partner doing something, or specifically the way you like, use ➕ reinforcement! This means saying something such as, “I really liked the way you played with Avery before. It made me so happy to see you both having such fun.” ✅ Give your partner space (literally) to parent. Don’t linger. This is also a great opportunity to take a break. ✅Practice self control. Do not jump in when your partner is in parent mode. They’ve got this. And if they don’t, they WILL figure it out. ✅👆🏼It may not be your way of doing things, and that is OKAY (actually really good for your kids!) - @postpartum on Instagram

Hurricane Teddy was definitely the sudsiest one weve seen. Billowy foam peaks, deposited from crashing waves, churned from six inches to a foot in height before cartwheeling on the backs of warm squalls high into the dunes. A blob-like cityscape clung to blades of sea oats all the way down the beach. Soft soundless explosions were lost in the wind, entire blocks instantaneously demolished then rebuilt in a single gust. And the white fluffy stuff on the beach made proper ammunition for waging a foam battle! Do you wanna build a foam-man? Yep! Despite our foam-man quickly morphing into a glob, sea foam contains some quintessential life building proteins, nutrients and other types of dissolved organic matter. It is also what creates sea foam. Dissolved organic matter acts like a detergent, trapping air in tiny bubbles when waves crash down. I was just talking to a friend of mine who shared some chaos at her work. She’s sober too, going on a few years. Her story about her work situation stressed me out just listening to it. A big contract lost, an unhappy corporate VP boss, her phone ringing off the hook all day. And she was calm. She was handling her business. She took all the calls. She sat through a horrible budget meeting. She said, “What’s the worst thing that could happen? I could get fired. At least I can hold a good job, get to the bathroom without stumbling, not be in a contact state of panic and hungover.” She’s so right. And she got me reflecting about all my life challenges. I have more than one. And a few of them are significant, like the kinds of stressors that used to send me into my bottomless wine glass. Because who needed a drink more than I did? No one, I thought. I realized, listening to my friend, that I don’t invite chaos anymore. I don’t have the pride I used to, like I thought I was a superhero swooping from disaster to disaster, trying to fix it and clean it up. I like remembering what I did last night. It’s not as exciting, my life, and it turns out it’s exactly the life I wanted and didn’t even know it.
