Today’s #SundaySands location: Ottawa Beach (1987 v. 2019) ——🏗️ In 1987, grass was planted at this dune to create a stable space for housing development. Since then, the grass has expanded, causing the dunes to move upward and outward, closer and closer to Lake Michigan. Grasses trap air particles and move physical particles, causing the shift. Do you still remember you first legit wave ride? 🏄🌊 This is JMs first wave ride. JM is from a Tagbanua tribe who lives in Napsan (more than an hour away south west of Puerto Princesa). He is one of the 4 kids I taught surfing while traveling with our camper van. 🚚. . The night before this, 3 Tagbanua kids followed our weird looking van when we turned left and camped out by the beach. After some talks, I told them I can teach them surfing if they go back the next day.. . They were back with JM. 🙌 So I told them, I would only teach them if they help me do a quick beach clean-up. Without a choice (haha 😋) they pick up some plastics at the beach and I taught them basic surfing. Perfect tiny waves for kids who saw surfboards for the first time. . Surfing Napsan is like surfing Nagtabon 10years ago. 🙈🙉🙊 Okay. Ill stop my story right here. Just super excited for new developments and projects happening this year. Hurricane Teddy was definitely the sudsiest one weve seen. Billowy foam peaks, deposited from crashing waves, churned from six inches to a foot in height before cartwheeling on the backs of warm squalls high into the dunes. A blob-like cityscape clung to blades of sea oats all the way down the beach. Soft soundless explosions were lost in the wind, entire blocks instantaneously demolished then rebuilt in a single gust. And the white fluffy stuff on the beach made proper ammunition for waging a foam battle! Do you wanna build a foam-man? Yep! Despite our foam-man quickly morphing into a glob, sea foam contains some quintessential life building proteins, nutrients and other types of dissolved organic matter. It is also what creates sea foam. Dissolved organic matter acts like a detergent, trapping air in tiny bubbles when waves crash down.
