The Uptown Records roster included Guy, Heavy D & The Boyz, Father MC, Notorious B.I.G., Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Al B. Sure!, and Soul for Real. Because of his vision and roster, general marketers began to take notice. Cue sponsorships, advertising, events, brand integrations, etc., etc. As a result hip hop culture is mainstream culture to this day. the late great and house music pioneer, dj frankie knuckles, once said that house was disco’s revenge. and he wasn’t lying. but in the years between the racists- and homophobic-driven disco backlash in 1979 and the rise of house music in the late 1980’s, black, latinx and lgbtq club goers were building the queendom for the eventual reign of house music. and those building blocks included the sound of electro and freestyle music. . when most people think of freestyle music - that is those who actually know or who are willing admit that they know what it is - they associate the complex genre of hard electro beats, loud bass drunks, orchestra hits and latin percussions exclusively with latinx or italian communities. but like disco, freestyle music has its roots in black music. . at the start of the 1980’s, the state of dance music was wobbly at best. while the genre still thrived underground, it was seen as poison at the mainstream level. that was until the introduction of the roland tr-808 drum machine. one of the breakout songs to utilize this magic of of the 808 was afrika bambaataa’s 1982 hit “planet rock.” the song not only forged a new direction for hip-hop but it forever changed the sound of music. . electro music, which was widely referred to as “breakdance music” in the early 1980’s, exploded on r&b radio with “one more shot” and “play at your risk” and eventually in pop radio after the monstrous success of “let the music play” in 1983. and black artists were at the forefront of the movement. . by the mid 1980’s, latinx artists like lisa lisa, the cover girls, safire, tka and nayobe had merged the electro sound with latin music sensibilities making way for the latin hip-hop sound that would later be identified as freestyle music. house music and new jack swing replaced the electro sound in black radio by 1988. . out of all the dance genres of the 1980s, house music would be the only one to significantly prevail. but in honor of the electro/breakdance/freestyle music genre, here are 15 songs that played a critical role in the history of freestyle music and kept dance floors packed until house music showed up to the party. - @granvarones on Instagram

Looking back at it now is full of bitter sweet memories. Sharing my life with my 4 older brothers and cousin (Carnell) music was my pride, joy and passion.🕺🏽 Only short lived though, after being exposed to the deep levels of politics and agendas quickly helped me realized that the music business is less about music and more about the “business”. Which was fine to overlook (at the age of 12) and stay focused on my craft, trying to protecting my innocence for the love of music. 💚 BUT This is usually the beginning of exploits for snakes 🐍 to come into the picture cleverly hiding behind contracts only in favor of the one(s) creating it. We made about 99.9% of all our income 💸 from live performances & merchandise and till this day I’ve never seen a PENNY from any of our B5 commercial albums. 🤷🏽♂️ For years! We reach out to lawyers, advisors and even TV networks for a chance to help us or tell our story and no one ever touched it with a 10 foot pole. 💔 So here I AM! telling my story, my truth and not from a “woe is me” perspective but as an example for the next generation of young artists to WRITE and OWN your content!
