As of yesterday Florida became the 15th state in America to ban the import and export of Shark fins!! The new law prohibits the import, export and sale of shark fins in Florida. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor, and face a fine of up to $9,500 for repeat violations and license suspension or revocation. Shark fins are used to make soup which is popular in China. The shark fin prohibition in Florida takes effect on October 1. We’d like to take this opportunity to call out Australia on its outdated shark net laws. Happy Sharkweek! 🦈 Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Adult males arrive during the month of July (beginning of the tourist season); adult females arrive in late September; and juveniles remain in the area throughout the year. RIP MICHAEL CHAPMAN (1935-2020). Sad News, Steven Spielberg’s camera operator on JAWS passed away today. Chapman wasnt just a camera operator on Jaws, he was a renowned cinematographer - perhaps best known for majestic beauty of his black and white photography in Raging Bull - but also was on the same duties on Scorceses Taxi Driver, the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Lost Boys, Scrooged and The Fugitive to name but a few. Chapman would team up with Martin Scorcese for one last cinematory job, this time on Michael Jacksons Bad video. 🦈DEBATE TIME🦈 Cool or negative? Join the debate. Our observations... We always criticize how our society has contributed to the negative portrayal of sharks. Starting with the obvious Jaws movie, continuing with shark encounters, with surfers and finishing with the classic biting shark image we all have in mind from cage diving (we dont really know how to categorize this experience BTW). On the other hand, there is a whole diving community, that admires these creatures and tries to educate students and fellow divers about not only their importance to the ecosystem but the mistaken image they have so unwillingly earned. 🦈 BUT... Here we go... 🦈 What about those funny shark costumes and accessories that feed off that exact negative shark image? You know what we mean, right? The shark sleeping bag, shark slippers, the jaws costume (the one that looks like you are being eaten by Jaws himself), or those funky wine glasses with the shark fins rising from the inside (of course the redder the wine, the better)... We might find these personally cute or funny, however, isnt it a bit contradictory we find these products cute or funny, even though we, as dive professionals, understand they represent and foment an exaggerated or even an unreal image of sharks? We would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and please dont get us wrong, we are not trying to offend anybody here.
