The last couple months have been...intense. Putting out a book is to open yourself to public exposure in a way thats hard, no matter what, but I feel fairly confident in saying that my trajectory has been an unusually bizarre one. And while there were certainly many thoughtful and enthusiastic reviews of my book, there were others that were not only harsh, but treated the book with open contempt - making it (and me) the target of anger and disgust in a way that I was wholly unprepared for. I had no idea how hard this would be for me, or how much being the focus of that kind of criticism would shake my confidence in myself & in my work. Im grateful to everybody who supported me through it, and listened to me in private while I put on a good face in public. I know it hasnt been easy. Id thought the answer was just to stop reading reviews, which I mostly had. But this review is by Ruth Franklin, who wrote a biography of Shirley Jackson (my favorite writer) that is in itself one of my favorite books. So I made an exception. And it puts my book in the context of other books & writers & the literary tradition that I love, in a way that, kind of miraculously, gave my own book back to me. Even the question she asks at the end makes me feel excited to keep exploring these ideas, to push myself further, as opposed to feeling shamed into silence. https://www.nybooks.com/…/kristen-roupenian-everyday-sadism/ Until I read this, I didnt realize that the contempt that had been aimed my way had started to seep into my own assessment of myself. But the truth is, I wrote the book I wanted to write. Pour lui, ce qu’il avait décrit dans deux études publiées en 2012 et en 2018 est en train de se réaliser : « Extrême weather events manifesting in fire, floods, heat, drought, etc. (it was an unprecedented 111F last week), pandemic, political chaos, increasing global conflict. It seems like we have gone past the point of no return towards a new normal—but, hopefully, the wake up call will make people put on the brakes so that we can stabilize somewhere short of the worst case scenario. With a spike of 82,170 coronavirus cases and 1,039 deaths in 24 hours, Indias tally on Monday breached the 60 lakh-mark with a total of 60,74,702 cases. Out of these, 9,62,640 are currently active whereas the number of discharged cases stands at 50,16,520. While 95,542 lost the battle against the viral disease. On July 17, India had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh on August 7. The country added another 10 lakh on August 23 and went past 40 lakh on September 5. In 11 days, it added another 10 lakh cases, amounting to 50 lakh cases. Twelve days later the tally has mounted to 60 lakh. Hospitals in Haiti for the most part do not have incinerators to burn medical waste. Instead, infected materials are trucked to unsecured trash dumps putting entire communities at risk of infection. Ive been sitting on this news since January, BUT I am so excited to finally announce that Ive been named as the 2020-2021 Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellow at Washington University, a fellowship jointly sponsored by the Saint Louis Art Museum and the university’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. . Throughout the academic year, I will be working with students in the MFA program through individual studio visits, class visits and critiques, artist lectures and presentations with local curators, and by teaching a series of professional practices workshops. . The fellowship will culminate with an exhibition of new work from “Every Breath We Drew” at the St. Louis Art Museum, opening in September of 2021.
