Sin embargo, su ubicación geográfica hacía difícil el aprovisionamiento de agua tanto para la iglesia como para el pueblo de Los Remedios, ubicado en una de las zonas altas al poniente de Naucalpan, en el Estado de México. El intento por solucionar este problema dejó como resultado un monumental acueducto construido en cantera, con una longitud de 500 m e integrado por 50 arcos de medio punto separados 6.7 m entre sí; cada columna tiene una base de 2.05 m de frente por 1.7 m de profundidad y una altura máxima de 16 metros. La obra se llevó a cabo en dos etapas, la primera en 1616 por órdenes del virrey Diego Fernández de Córdoba con el objetivo de llevar agua al templo; el preciado líquido sería trasportado desde el ojo de agua del pueblo de San Francisco Chimalpa a través de un arcaduz construido con tubos de barro. Reading my entire book, out loud, in a recording studio, with added enthusiasm, was surprisingly exhausting. I hope that’s not indicative of the regular reader experience! It also encouraged me to revisit parts of the book (and journey) that I haven’t thought of for a while. I’ll post some of the thoughts that got left behind. There were some pictures I haven’t look at since then too- this from, from the Qubbat Al-Sakkrah (Dome of the Rock) shrine in Jerusalem, taken on the day I finished. Jerusalem was one of the hardest places to write about, perhaps for obvious reasons. From the preface of my paperback: - An American who had spent a decade in Jerusalem once told me that there was a saying he thought of often when trying to understand the region. ‘By the end of your first day in the Holy Land, you think you can write a book,’ he said. ‘Stay a month, and you’ll aim for a newspaper article. Give it a year, and you don’t know where to begin.’ That I’ve since learned this to be a relatively common refrain, and by no means limited to Jerusalem or the Holy Land, does not diminish its accuracy. This historical adobe pigeon tower is located in the middle of an expansive desert with a little vegetation near Ad Dilam and just one and half hours drive away from Riyadh city. . A brief history of Womens Rights in Pakistan (Part 2): Shortly after Zia ul Haq established his dictatorship in Pakistan, he introduced the infamous Hudood Ordinances in 1979. The Hudood Ordinances comprised of laws that significantly reduced the rights of the women in the country. Before I expand on what all the Hudood Ordinances entailed, I think its first important to understand the indirect impact that Zias tenure had on the women of the time. Shireen Khan Burki, in Politics of Misogyny makes note of how the Federal State began to demand the covering of women with chadors- working women were told to adhere to these laws and women were also forced to ensure that they covered themselves before appearing on state-controlled television. Although the rural life was relatively unwavered by Zias laws, the urban womans life was drastically affected. Not only was there a staunch increase in restrictions, but harassment against women was also on the rise (Burki, 2016, p. 105). There were debates relating to whether the Muslim Family Law Ordinance of 1961 (discussed in the previous post) should be repealed, whether women should be allowed to drive cars, and also whether women should be barred from participating in spectator sports. Even though all of these issues contributed to the agitation of women, the Hudood Ordinances of 1979 proved to be the pivotal moment when the leading female activists and lawyers decided to mobilise in protest of Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. [The next post (part 3) will refer to the Hudood Ordinances and its effects]. *** I understand that my choice of words may seem to be harsher than necessary- but it is about time that we understand where the problem lies. Islam, without a doubt, has beautiful teachings which- in theory- would format a perfect society. However, that does not mean that imperfect humans can not exploit and distort it to further their own agendas. Religion is a tool that has been the easiest to play with for many politicians, and they have used it to their advantage for centuries. Many Americans still do not know about Operation Ajax: a covert regime-change operation that changed the course of history in Iran and the world. On August 19th, 1953 the American and British Intelligence led a coup d’etat that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected prime minister Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. Dr. Mossadegh nationalized Irans oil industry, which had for years been fully controlled by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company - currently known as the British Petroleum - and was only a source of little revenue for the country. In response, agents, mobs, and mercenaries were paid and trained by the CIA to overthrow Mossadeghs government. Amidst nationwide protests, Mohammad Reza Shah, was re-installed by the USA as the Shah and ruler of Iran. The growing despair and discontent around the country culminated in a massive uprising that toppled the Shahs regime in 1979. These events stifled hopes for democracy in Iran and embittered Iran-US relations into the current day in the 21st century. The 1953 coup in Iran was the first time the CIA orchestrated the overthrow of a democratically elected government. The success of this operation encouraged the USA to carry out similar operations all across Latin America. The USA finally acknowledged its role in the coup in August 2013, with further documents released as late as March 2018. The current administration in the USA did not appear out of nowhere. It was the direct result of decades of injustice and the American abuse of power at all levels. What we witness now in the USA is but a glimpse at the horror and suffering that this countrys imperialist ethos has caused for the rest of the world. At this moment in history, it is crucial for Americans of all political ideologies to break free from the systems that propagate the narratives of superiority. Now more than ever our struggles are intertwined. Многие знают эту историю, но мы решили сделать отдельный пост, что бы рассказать остальным Военнослужащий курдского ополчения “Пешмерга“ Ако Абдурахман, находясь в командировке в городе Киркук, стал свидетелем нападения боевиков ИГИЛ В ходе атаки пострадало большое количество военных и гражданских лиц, но никто не мог к ним приблизиться для оказания помощи из-за снайперских обстрелов. В сложившей ситуации Абдурахман принял решение вывезти раненых людей на своей бронированной семерке, которую некогда купил за 9 тыс. долларов Транспортировка людей длилась с утра до ночи. В общей сложности парень спас порядка 70 человек. Что до самой машины, то она выдержала 50 попаданий пуль В его машине были сунниты, шииты, курды, туркмены и христиане. Lembro até hoje da minha reação ao entrar no metrô de Moscou pela primeira vez. ⠀ Fiquei impressionado com o que vi. Opulência, opressão e nostalgia foi o que a grandiosidade mantida com o passar do tempo me transmitiu. ⠀ Recordo muito bem do arrepio que senti ao me deparar com estátuas, estuques, longas escadas-rolantes com fórmicas de madeira e luminárias dos anos 60. ⠀ Foi uma incursão com ares de pompa e decadência bem mantidas. Um contato com um orgulho do que já foi e que se imaginou que seria. ⠀ Para os soviéticos, os metrôs contavam a história do seu povo, serviam como instrumentos políticos e ideológicos para induzir todos a confiarem no progresso do modelo econômico, assim como algumas estações podiam ser usadas como bunkers contra bombas. ⠀ Por vezes, como em Tashkent - primeira foto do post -, conseguimos sentir uma parcela de como devia ter sido viver àquela época. ⠀ Funcionários trajando uniformes militares, cabines ainda ornadas com cortinas rendadas e antigas, fichas de metrô como as de antigamente, catracas originais nunca trocadas e senhoras com lenços na cabeça vagando de um lado para outro como se ainda desacreditadas com a notícia de que a URSS ruíra. ⠀ Revisitando a história, após a Primeira Guerra, Revolução Russa e Guerra Civil, a URSS se viu na necessidade de correr atrás do compasso global no movimento de industrialização e modernização. ⠀ Contudo, enquanto o ocidente focava no individual, os soviéticos apostavam esperançosos em seus ideias coletivistas. Assim sendo, investiram no transporte público em massa; sendo o metrô o ápice dessa expressão. ⠀ A suntuosidade das estações e edificações agia como um portal ao subterrâneo. Cada estação era mais imaginativa que a outra, partindo de referências clássicas, às viagens espaciais e a um utópico futuro. ⠀ A utopia nunca tomou forma, mas o metrô é uma prova concreta dessa tentativa. ⠀ Deslocar-se de metrô é um jeito interessante e barato de passear por essas cidades e estar em contato com a história. ⠀ Definitivamente um dos museus vivos mais interessantes que já visitei.
