City Health Officer Anissa Davis warns Long Beach residents about potential unhealthy air quality due to two major wildfires in the Southern California region, the Bobcat Fire and the El Dorado Fire, which are producing heavy smoke. Smoke and ash rising into the atmosphere may be visible over portions of Long Beach and surrounding areas, potentially creating unhealthy conditions. All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in any area directly impacted by smoke and ash. This includes areas where residents can see or smell smoke. In any area impacted by smoke, residents should take the following precautions: Avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. Remain indoors, especially for individuals with respiratory or heart disease, pregnant women, older adults and children. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Change the standard air-conditioner filter to a medium or high efficiency filter. If you have a wall-unit or window-unit air conditioner, set it to “re-circulate.” Avoid the use of a swamp cooler or whole-house fan to prevent bringing additional smoke inside, if possible. Last evening just before sunset, Big Sur Fire firefighters conducted a campfire patrol on South Coast Ridge Road. Not surprisingly the ridge was crowded with campers. The patrol resulted in the extinguishing of 7 campfires, and prevention of lighting of 6 others. The goal of these patrols is not only fire prevention, but education to our visitors. We’re happy to say that we were very well received and we plan on doing another patrol this evening with hopefully similar results. Big Sur Fire recognizes the benefit of doing these patrols, and will continue to do so on the busiest and most dangerous weather weekends when appropriate and as volunteer time allows to fill the gap and augment the USFS prevention and patrols. Tomorrow Saturday 4th January 2020 marks my 40th year on this magnificent planet. It is also a day forecast with a catastrophic fire rating and unprecedented fire danger as NSW is officially declared a state of emergency. Our beautiful country is burning out of control. The scale and extent of the devastation is already unfathomable and increasing every day with the current count at 9 million acres burnt in NSW alone. It is already the most destructive and widespread bushfire season in Australia’s history. We are only one month into Summer. People are losing their lives, their homes, their properties, their animals. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing from apocalyptic conditions while others, having been trapped and huddled in bodies of water are being rescued by Naval ships. Our native wildlife is being decimated with legitimate fears of extinction. An estimated 480 million animals have perished, including a third of our koala population. This unbearable number is only going to grow. Our cities and towns are choking from the blanketed smoke with eerie glowing red sunsets. The response from our government has been abominable. On assessment of international climate policy, Australia was singled out as the worst performing country by the 2020 Climate Change Performance Index. It all is very real, very distressing and utterly heartbreaking. The feeling of helplessness is aching. But we can’t look away. The “she’ll be right” mentality needs to be well and truly replaced with “she needs our help” 🌏 We have entered into this new decade with an undeniable call to action. A call for change. A call for empathy, for compassion. To be complacent is to be compliant with the status quo and watch the animals, people and planet suffer. We need to be informed, aware, communicating and learning. We need to use these social platforms to create awareness and inspire compassion, unity and action. Hoarding conditions made the job tougher for firefighters as the blaze quickly ravaged a neighboring home and spread to the third. Fourteen mutual aid companies responded to assist, Uram said. The Red Cross aided the displaced families, relocating one of them, the captain said. The Bergen County Arson Investigations Unit also was at the scene, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence. . Spent some time covering the efforts of firefighters battling the Walbridge Fire outside Guerneville today. In Armstrong Redwood State Reserve, firefighters managed to protect heritage giant redwoods including Colonel Armstrong by cutting hand lines, setting backfired, and spraying them with foam. UPDATE: SABINO CANYON CLOSED UNTIL NOV 1 TO ALLOW FOR CLEANUP FROM BIGHORN FIRE As Sabino Canyons fans know, this amazing wonder of nature is one of the most celebrated and studied natural oasis areas in southern Arizona. Its experiences are sought by visitors, students, and scientists from around the world. Sabino Canyon simply captures the spirit of anyone who sets foot in its inviting, lush cavernous beauty. Its rugged all-levels terrain trails, inviting paths and new electric (quieter) shuttle drives throughout its depths continue to stir awe. Now theres an interruption in our enjoyment of the canyon. Located in the Coronado National Forest, Sabino Canyon was in the path of the Bighorn Fire that began June 5th and ended in late July. The fire made its way into Esperero Canyon and the upper part of Sabino Canyon above Shuttle Stop #9, both popular hiking regions for experienced hikers. Luckily firefighters were able to prevent the fire from going into lower Sabino Canyon. Thus, the Coronado National Forest (United Stated Forest Service) has declared that the canyon will be closed until November 1 to allow for work that will make the canyon safe for the return of visitors. STRIKE TEAM 1282A returns home Last night our strike team came home after 14 days at the CZU Lightning Fire. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. This years fire season has started very aggressively and resources are already stretched thin. Your Downey Fire Dept. is prepared and honored to serve as part of the states Master Mutual Aid system. Strike Team 1282A was made up of Engine’s from Downey, Santa Fe Springs, West Covina, La Habra Heights and Torrance. As the elected President of the Tucson Fire Fighters Association, I am challenged daily with the responsibility of making certain our firefighters are safe and healthy. Being a Professional Firefighter has never been more dangerous, and I am deeply concerned for the health and welfare of our members. What you may not see however, is something that not only moves me, but makes me prouder than ever. When the women and men of TFD, who serve the great City of Tucson, continue to selflessly report to duty. They put their gear on the fire trucks and serve as humble and professional servants. It brings a smile to my face and makes me proud to be a part of something much bigger than myself.⁣ ⁣ In addition to the incredible risks they are faced with daily, our firefighters are now challenged with COVID-19 and a constant exposure to the virus. Concerned not only for their own well-being but for that of their families, our firefighters are taking extreme caution to help minimize the spread of the virus. ⁣ ⁣ We have recently seen protests in downtown Tucson, some of which lead to significant property damage and fires. During one of these protests, our own Firefighter was struck in the face by a rock while extinguishing a fire. ⁣ ⁣ We look to the North and see our beloved Catalina Mountains ablaze and pray for the safety of the crews working so hard to contain it. ⁣ ⁣ And amidst all this chaos, we lost our TFD Sister to Occupational Cancer this week, Captain Jacki deHaro. ⁣ ⁣ With so many challenges faced daily by our firefighters, and first responders everywhere, I felt compelled to take a moment to proudly thank our brave women and men, not only for your unbreakable will and positive spirits, but for your unwavering commitment to the Brother and Sister next to you. I know that being a first responder isn’t the most popular career field right now with the current situation, but I wouldn’t change what I do for anything. I’ve been on the job for 14 years and I absolutely love it. Everyday I come to work is an opportunity to help someone. Last week I was on a 5 hour fire at A plastic company and just yesterday I was pulling a guy out of the lake with a broken leg. Being a first responder is a major responsibility and not many people are built for it. So many “experts” with zero experience want to sit back and judge the decisions that are made but take no action. Selain kisah letusan dahsyat Krakatau tahun 1883, kisah dahsyatnya letusan Gunung Krakatau ternyata juga pernah terjadi di tahun 416 Sebelum Masehi. Cerita ini dilukiskan dalam Kitab Pustaka Raja Purwa. Kitab ini melukiskan dahsyatnya dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh letusan Krakatau hingga mampu memisahkan Pulau Jawa dan Sumatera. Tulisan ini membuat banyak ahli percaya bahwa kedua pulau ini merupakan satu rangkaian. . Suara menggelegar datang dari Gunung Batuwara (sekarang Pulosari), yang dijawab dengan suara serupa dari Gunung Kapi (Krakatau). Pijaran api menggelora, hingga mencapai langit, keluar dari gunung itu. Seluruh dunia terguncang dan suara guntur terus menggelegar, bersamaan dengan hujan deras dan kilat di tempat itu, tapi air itu bukan memadamkan api di Gunung Kapi, malah mengobarkan api lebih dahsyat. Suaranya sangat menakutkan, hingga membuat Gunung Kapi hancur berkeping-keping hingga ke dalam bumi. Air laut mulai membanjiri daratan, daerah di timur Batuwara hingga Rajabasa (gunung berapi di selatan Sumatera), tenggelam ke dalam laut. Kehidupan di bagian utara Sunda hingga ke Gunung Rajabasa tenggelam dan menghanyutkan harta benda mereka. Api telah memenuhi daratan itu, di mana Kapi telah berubah menjadi laut, dan Jawa dan Sumatera terbelah menjadi dua bagian. .
