Origins of design and plagiarism are tricky - nothing can ever be proved and a single image on a moodboard isn’t malicious! What can be malicious is industry-wide normalised design plagiarism that allows fast fashion models to expand at the expense of independent designers. Small scale brands will never compete with (unethical) low prices and high turnover of hundreds of design styles. High street and fast fashion retailers are capable of producing almost exact copies of designs with much cheaper fabrics and techniques in such a short time (boohoo can manufacture product in as little as two weeks). @urbanoutfitters is also embroiled in refusing to #payup - Covid order cancellation meant millions of garment workers are unpaid for completed work. #payup has had plenty of victories but URBN has stayed performative. Alongside countless claims of work copied from independent designers and accusations of teams flying globally to “concept” (nick) ideas. Taking inspiration from an image on a moodboard isn’t illegal but it is unethical; especially considering the time, work and energy invested by an independent designer when developing designs. Who knows if that even happened here? I dunno! Didn’t have super strong opinions but plenty of other people did (my mum) I’m sat making recent pink swirl orders this eve: you know who to dm if you want a lovingly, sustainably slow handmade number. Or go for the flammable polyester 💘 Boycott fast Fukin fashion! Edit! Important to also note my reluctance to even make the link : for fear of assuming anyone would look to my stuff for inspo and being presumptuous / cocky! It would be a different situation with a fellow small designer - but easier with a big brand. Nothing in fash is ever new and no one has monopoly on designs. Around the time that my insta was blowing up, I was dealing with a lot. Rather, I was enduring a depressive episode and NOT dealing with it particularly well. Every time I decide that I need to write about my mental illnesses (as well as depression, I also have general anxiety disorder and also deal with suicidal ideation - it’s all so much fun) I procrastinate and push that task aside. Hence why I haven’t posted on the grid in a week and a half. Last week I was in a really dark place and felt so incredibly hopeless. This week was better in that I wasn’t feeling as low, but my anxiety was through the roof. I don’t really have anyone that I can talk to about why I go through these motions. Last year I mentioned that I had a really negative experience with NHS Talking Therapy and it made me really hesitant to pursue therapy any further. But at this point I really feel like I have no choice but to reach out again and that terrifies me. But I feel like my mental illnesses hold me back in so many aspects of my life - including how I take on work here - and that makes me feel super guilty. So I’m gonna bite the bullet and seek help. Я очень изнеженный человек и вообще чувствую себя комнатным растением, ведь пока я нахожусь в ЮК я ограждена от гомофобных шуток, от каких-либо замечаний по поводу внешнего вида прохожих, от блэкфейса на первом канале, от блевотных шуток про Беларусь на «comment out». Очень легко быть толерантным, понимающим и не токсичным человеком, когда таковым является твоё окружение. Когда тебе не надо объяснять что такое феминизм или что такое небинарность. Легко жить в эхо-камере, где комфортно и кажется, что все люди солнышки и как и ты поддерживают BLM или понимают разницу между полом и гендерном. Это очень привилегированная позиция вытекающая из кучи возможностей данных мне родителями. Вот поэтому чаще всего я пишу на английском, что с одной стороны - комфортно, а с другой где-то трусливо и выглядит как попытка избежать конфликтов. Хотя я очень люблю диалог. К сожалению, на моей практике попытки диалога часто заканчиваются фразой «я не знаю что это [феминизм, квир теория, гендер, и тд.] такое и знать не хочу!». Even though I grew up in the West (Oakland), I went to school in the hills so birthday parties were always at the ice rink. I swear I always felt like I was the only Black girl who knew how to ice skate but not roller skate. 😂😂😂 My kids had asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I had no idea, then when I came up with skates and went to look for some, they were all sold out out of skates everywhere online. COVID apparently made everybody decide it was time to skate lol! I was sad cause I started looking end of July and couldn’t get them for my birthday at the end of August, but I got on the waitlist and as soon as I saw the email, I got them. Within an hour they were mostly sold out again. Hence the super excitement! Now, I may or may not document my journey learning how to skate again, but these are cute af and I’m excited to start rollin!
