- Art gothique
I’ve been thinking about French painting a lot lately for a host of reasons, and this is definitely one of my absolute favorites. Despite being over five hundred and fifty years old, the right wing of the Melun Diptych is an extraordinarily “modern” work of art, a terrible cliché I usually avoid, but in this case find utterly unavoidable. It’s an exquisite study in geometry, from the perpendicular lines of the Virgin Mary’s marble-encrusted throne to the ovoid shape of her perfectly plucked head. And then there are the buoyant bodies of the red seraphim and blue cherubim (who incidentally have always reminded me, in the very best possible way, of juvenile versions of the Michelin Man as interpreted by Jeff Koons). The spheres, too, are remarkable, each as perfect as a little celestial orb—the angels’ heads, the iridescent pearls, and of course, the Virgin’s breasts. Impossibly spaced, one covered and the other bared to reveal its marble-like “flesh,” they are fantasy appendages for the Virgin in her otherworldly glory as Queen of Heaven. Although exposed to show its role as a source of sustenance for the Christ Child, the Virgin’s uncovered breast can hardly be mistaken for a real lactating breast. The intersection of divinity, woman and symbol takes a very memorable form here indeed, especially since tradition holds that Mary’s features were modelled on those of Agnes Sorel, mistress to King Charles VII… To conclude, I leave you with a passage from Clement Marot’s lengthy ode to the beautiful breast (“Blason du beau tetin”), first published in 1536: […] Breast that never moves, Neither to come, nor to go, Neither to run, nor to dance. #dallenostrecollezioni Nella sala IV, in dialogo con il celeberrimo Busto di Gentildonna del Laurana, è questa Madonna del Latte di Domenico Gagini, altro protagonista della scultura in Sicilia del secondo Quattrocento; si coglie immediatamente nel confronto lo stile sciolto e pittorico del Gagini, che tanta fortuna ebbe in Sicilia presso la committenza soprattutto religiosa. Particolare attenzione è stata posta nella resa del ricco panneggio e del decoro del manto e delle vesti, dai bordi lavorati; i volti sono caratterizzati dalla ricerca di naturalezza espressiva, accentuata dalla policromia. Il rapporto affettuoso tra madre e figlio è suggerito dal chinarsi della testa e dal leggero sbilanciamento della Madonna verso il bambino. SI tratta insomma di una interpretazione del divino umana ed immediata, in linea con la visione antropocentrica della cultura rinascimentale. 🔴🔴 PERCHÉ FESTEGGIAMO IL 17 AGOSTO S. Agata V. e M. Festa della Traslazione delle Sacre Reliquie a Catania. Le reliquie della Santa furono trafugate a Costantinopoli nel 1040 dal generale bizantino Giorgio Maniace. Nel 1126 due soldati (forse francesi), Giliberto e Goselino, le rapirono per consegnarle al Vescovo Maurizio nel Castello di Aci. Era il 17 agosto 1126, il popolo catanese, svegliato durante la notte da uno scampanio a festa, non perse tempo a cambiarsi d’abito e si riversò in strada così come si trovava, anche a piedi nudi e in camicia da notte, (l’origine del “sacco” che rappresenta il camice bianco da notte con il quale i cittadini si riversarono per le strade per accogliere prima possibile le reliquie finalmente recuperate). Lo storico incontro dei catanesi con le spoglie di Sant’Agata avvenne nel quartiere di Ognina, dove in seguito fu eretta una chiesa che nel 1381 la lava circondo senza distruggere, ma che più recentemente fu abbandonata e infine lasciata andare in rovina. Il 17 agosto 1126, le reliquie rientrarono nel Duomo di Catania. Massys se je rodil v Leuvnu, mestecu vzhodno od Bruslja, ki je danes poznano predvsem po izvrstnih pivovarnah. 🍺 Leta 1491 se je naselil v Antwerpnu in postal cenjen član ceha sv.
