Ive experienced 7 eating disorders in the span of 15 years. 5 of which Im fully recovered, 2 of which I control - daily. My disciplines create freedom from body dysmorphia and extreme binge eating disorder. The journey of removing the languages and habits around food have been on going, but it feels pretty awesome to have spent days on end in NY lockdown and in hotel quarantine, without ever resorting to overeating or using food to cope with chaos, stress, boredom, rejection or loniliness. . . Friends of Animals recently filed a lawsuit against Colorado Parks and Wildlife for requiring a hunting or fishing license to access State Wildlife Areas (SWA) and State Trust Land (STL). They claims this is a violation of their First Amendment freedom of speech because, as non-hunting members of the public, they are being forced to make a public statement in favor of hunting and fishing. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) recently enacted new regulations to return SWA and STL property to its intended uses, wildlife related recreation, by requiring a hunting or fishing license to access the land. SWA and STL lands are not funded by taxpayer dollars and the only funding they receive is through Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson dollars, as well as fees from the purchase of hunting and fishing licenses. As such, sportsmen paid to purchase the lands and pay to maintain the lands, so the main purpose of the properties should remain hunting and fishing recreation. CPW states that non-consumptive use and the now defunct SWA access permits, reduced the amount of federal funds granted the following year. As a result, CPW has clarified that users are not required to hunt or fish, but you must have a valid hunting or fishing license to access the land so that matching federal dollars are not reduced and all those who access the land are contributing to its funding. Simply put, those who want to use the public lands for purposes other than hunting and fishing should contribute their fair share of the money needed to support those lands. The Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts implemented an excise tax on the purchase of firearms, ammunition, fishing and outdoor equipment that funds conservation and public land management efforts across the U.S. These taxes are collected, in addition to license and permit fees, and collectively fund the majority of all wildlife conservation and public land access in Colorado. I wrote about how almost/kinda losing my restaurants pushed me to care about politics (@KCRW LINK IN BIO). I was intimidated by the assignment, a little afraid/ashamed to share that I knew so little about the subject before. It was @gillian_ferguson’s suggestion to try (this was pre-DNC). There is a lot about politics that I still don’t know, and there is a lot that I question as far as worth + impact, plenty that I feel overwhelmed by. . I am used to waking up every day, startled by the weight of responsibility to keep a restaurant in operation. But since mid-March, I found myself shifting my priorities to learn about the system. Legislation. It became abundantly clear that, in this country, we lacked the leadership in the White House to be in control of this virus in any kind of timely way, and a lot would suffer because of it. I do not know where independent restaurants fall as far as what’s MOST important + vital, but I can just share from an intimate perspective what my experience as a restaurateur has been like, how deeply afraid I am to disappoint + fail — and attempt to speak somewhat universally. And hopefully, these elected individuals in position of power would listen, spread the word, and massage their influence to find solutions to help. As we all have had to do. . I am *amazed* that the RESTAURANTS Act, this thing we’ve been fighting for, has been included in the HEROES Act. The Senate will vote on it as early as tomorrow. It could help restaurants inch along … but again, this is a game of time. . My distraction last Fri was to drive all over the city + deliver cocktail grams by @jfiguer1. I knocked on doors + was greeted with a lot of suspicious looks, which soon turned into all-out shock: Someone got you a gift from All Day Baby, I would say! All the grams arrived with a some CA voter info that I put together. A BIG shout-out to @alicesbrink for helping with the deliveries (she did the 110 route!). It also marks one year since the revocation of Article 370, which granted limited autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. “Kashmir is the most militarized region on Earth and experiences one of the highest number of internet and communication bans on the planet. This region is strategically cut off from the rest of the world so you can’t learn about what’s going on here.” - via @standwkashmir “Jasbir Puar, a professor at Rutgers University, calls this phenomenon “homonationalism”. This is predominantly used to describe how Western nations use their supposed track record on LGBTQ rights to degrade other nations. Her name was Tracy “Mia” Green🕊 (9/29/20) PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Law enforcement sources say the man charged with the murder of a transgender woman in West Philadelphia Monday has now confessed to the killing. Police say Abdullah Ibn El-Amin Jaamia was pulled over at 41st Street and Westminster Avenue after he blew a stop sign because he was rushing a woman, Tracy “Mia” Green, to the hospital after she was shot three times around 8 a.m. With lights and sirens on, officers helped escort the Jeep Wrangler to Penn Presbyterian, where 29-year-old Green, a transgender woman, was later pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources say El-Amin Jaamia told detectives he was trying to rescue Green as she was yelling for help nearby and that he told them Green started to take off her clothes in the car, before she was shot in the neck, as they were driving. Officials have charged El-Amin Jaamia with Green’s murder, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and related offenses. Green is the second known transgender woman to be killed in Philadelphia this year. Dominique Rem’mie Fells was found dead and dismembered in the river near Bartrams Garden this summer. “This latest act of violence against a member of our community is a somber reminder of the epidemic of violence against trans individuals. It is a crisis that cannot be allowed to persist any further. The countless painful losses experienced during this year alone—especially within our transgender communities of color— remind us that there is much work to be done in the pursuit of full equality, respect, and justice for us all, the citys Office of LGBT Affairs said in a statement. Ask lesbian activist Patricia McCombs whether she saw women who lived, loved, and most importantly, looked like her growing up pre-Stonewall, and her answer is swift and firm. “Never,” said McCombs, a Chicago woman who, decades later, would play an unexpected role in changing that pattern. Her work as a party promoter and vocal lesbian rights activist earned her a spot in the Black Lesbian Archives, an Atlanta-based historical preservation project looking to document and share the story of black gay women for generations to come. Comprised of nearly 1,000 scrapbooks, audio files, videos, poems, newsletters and photos, the exhibit is an effort of Krü Maekdo, who this month kicks off a 30-stop traveling tour. Her goal: highlighting the existence of what many consider a marginalized community within a marginalized community. The tour kicks off in Atlanta, and will include a Feb. 23 showing at Charis Books and More. It will wrap up this July in Chicago, where Maekdo got her archiving start. The extraordinary woman who carried both our sons is a private person. She’s not a publicity seeking person like yourself. Collectively, we decided to remove the surrogate’s name from our son’s birth certificate to protect her identity. This turned out to be an extremely wise move, as a journalist managed to illegally acquire a copy of our son’s birth certificate from the registry office. A spectacular feat, given we hadn’t even received the very first copy ourselves. The same newspaper that has run your misguided rantings also published the full details from that birth certificate online. May I respectfully ask you to butt out and mind your own business? Something really cool happened Friday. I woke up to a online newspaper article from my hometown paper about my travel nurse journey! It was even written by a fellow classmate, John Hamilton, which made it even better! He is such a talented journalist and writer and did a fantastic job with the article. Saturday, I woke up to a pic in my inbox from another former hometown classmate that the article was on the front page of the print newspaper! I’m thankful and humbled to have this stage in my nursing career recognized by the place a called home for 19 years. ❤️ Thankful to John for reaching out and thinking I was worthy of writing about!
