29 years ago today, 46 young men and women walked through the doors of Cincinnati Police Academy to begin their training as the 75th Cincinnati Police Recruit Class. We were young and dumb back then. Bright eyed and bushy tailed. Full of piss and vinegar. Since then, we’ve lost a few through resignations and firings. We have, however, survived several line of duty deaths including our classmate, Dan Pope. We survived the Pharron Crosby incident. We survived TABD. We survived the riots of 2001. We even survived the Tom Streicher and Jeffery Blackwell eras. For those of us who have retired, Thank God we made it! For those of you still active, hurry up and join us! September 2016 - I had the pleasure of being the medical technician for this stud. At the thought of not passing my test and prolonging his inpatient stay he was extremely anxious and sad. While prepping him he shared his life story with me. I cheered him on during his test and thankfully, he passed. Shortly after he was discharged. He urged me to come to the Veteran’s Day event the following weekend so that I could meet his wife. He greeted me with a huge hug and smiling face. He explained how thankful he was that I was his technician that day. The best way I celebrate Veteran’s Day is by serving other Vets. We spend so much time working, I hope you do something to make it fun, because “workplace fun has been linked to, enhanced motivation, increased productivity, reduced stress, higher job satisfaction and Improved task performance.”* About a month ago at Laughlin Air Force Base, this flight of real life Captain Marvels, disguised as Wonder Women, rocked a low-level competition in the T-38 Talon. For those curious what this means, it includes flying a low-level route, 500 feet above the ground going 500mph through the mountains of Big Bend National Park, navigating using only paper maps and compasses (no GPS), flying OVER the established target (point on the ground) exactly on-time using only a clock and adjusting for wind (again, no GPS), returning to base and having the landing graded. This team of all women shacked the target to the SECOND and the wingman GREASED on a beautiful landing! Officer Corona was fatally shot last night while investigating a traffic accident in the City of Davis, Ca. She was just 22 years old, graduated from the police academy in July 2018, and finished her training program only weeks ago. Her father, a 26-year veteran of law enforcement said, “We are extremely proud of Natalie and all her accomplishments at such a young age. She is very excited to be a police officer and is very dedicated to the profession of law enforcement.” That dedication was evident from the young woman’s Facebook page, which featured a photo of her wearing a blue dress and smiling as she held a “thin blue line” American flag devoted to honoring police. SPC Steven E. Gutowski - Remembering an American Hero SPC Steven E. Gutowski, 24, of Plymouth, Mass., was Killed In Action on this day in 2011 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Steven was born in Weymouth, MA May 27, 1987 and resided in Plymouth his whole life. He was a 2005 graduate of Plymouth North High School. He ran on the track team and played football during his high school years. He was very involved with the high school marketing club - DECA and helped by running the school store. He also liked to bowl on the weekends and even joined his fathers mens league when he was old enough. Steven held different positions within the Plymouth Recreation Dept. over his high school years and thoroughly enjoyed working with all the kids. In his last year prior to joining the Army the kids dipped their hands in paint and left their handprints on his t-shirt, which he then framed and cherished dearly. He also spent many summer nights working at the Plymouth Long Beach for the town of Plymouth. When he wasnt at the beach or with the kids, he worked Team Ops Security for Gillette Stadium, for 3+ years. He was a huge fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, but his love for the Boston Bruins was second to none: he was so thankful to see them win the Stanley Cup and was able to watch the games by being woken up at 4 a.m. in Afghanistan. On June 28th, 2005, a small team of Navy #SEALs were on mission in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan to capture a high-value target. Their mission was compromised, and they were met by more than 50 enemy insurgents who pinned them down for an extended period resulting in the death of three of the four team members. A rescue helicopter carrying eight additional SEALs and eight U.S. Army #NightStalkers was subsequently shot down, making Operation Red Wings one of the darkest days in U.S. Special Operations Command and Naval Special Warfare history. - Corporal Dipprasad Pun was a sentry at a checkpoint in Afghanistan when he came under attack. Alone, he fended off a dozen Taliban with guns, grenades, a land mine, a sandbag and a fucking tripod when he ran out of ammunition. He earned the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for his acts of bravery.
