UPDATE 4:45 P.M. – Maui Fire Department continues to fight a fire in Puunene, which is an estimated 1,500 acres in size and about 50 percent contained. Maui Veterans (Mokulele) Highway is closed at Hansen Road and North Kihei Road. The Maui Humane Society Puunene shelter and Central Maui Baseyard have been evacuated. Three helicopters and multiple MFD units have responded to the blaze that started around 1:00 p.m. in the vicinity of the old Puunene School and Puunene Post Office. I have to comment on this ‘Storm Area 51’ thing. I do understand it was started as a joke by someone, but there are a number of people who are actually planning on showing up. This is a misguided idea. Area 51 is a classified research base. There are no aliens or alien technology located there. The only place there was ever any alien technology was at Site S4, south of Area 51 proper. That was 30 years ago. S4 may have moved decades ago or it’s possible it’s no longer being used for the project. I do not support this ‘movement’. The last time someone tried to get in to Area 51 he was shot. This is not the way to go about trying to get more information. What is good, is the interest in the subject - the science and technology. Interpretamos este acto como un claro intento de exclusión de la comunidad en temas de importancia para la comuna y para el medio ambiente, ya que le recordamos que dicha concesión sanitaria declaró que iba a construir una planta desaladora, cuyas tuberias pasan por la Quebrada Quirilluca y vertiente natural. . Cabe señalar que en dicha sesión el Director de Obras Municipales señaló que la concesión sanitaria era incompatible con el Plan Regulador, pronunciamiento que hemos pedido a la Municipalidad desde enero de este año. Particularmente quedé impactada, no solo por el enorme proyecto que levantaron y que crece día a día con la colaboración de voluntarios, sino también por ver de tan cerca el estado en el que muchísimas personas están viviendo y que, a mi juicio, NO ESTÁ BIEN. Ni hablar la contaminación que había tanto en las calles (de tierra obvio) como en un arroyo que pasaba (mucha espuma, bolsas, telas, residuos orgánicos, pilas, plástico, plástico, plástico). Take a look at the progress on the floating wetland area of Pier 26 in New York Citys Hudson River Park! Along with Biohabitats, @olininsta , @rva_ny , @mueser_rutledge , and @tillett_lighting_design are bringing dynamic ecological encounters to an urban environment. This constructed floating wetland, planted on PET planting media units from Floating Wetland Solutions, was designed to mimic the ecotones of a coastal ecosystem featuring a rocky intertidal zone, low marsh, high marsh, and coastal tree and shrub area. Ecotones are transition areas between two biological communities, and each of the areas within the wetland are designed at a specific elevation to be representative of that particular zone. The boulders surrounding the edges of the wetland area are designed with depressions to create tide pool habitat that is common in the intertidal zone, which may be used by various bivalves, crabs, and small fish species. I have grown up and lived in Lake Charles,Louisiana all my life. My wife and I love not only the community but the people that represent this beautiful place. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that the people of Southwest Louisiana have been tested and tried. But if it’s one thing I know about my community and the people that live there, our roots grow deep and can’t be torn up from a storm, no matter what category it is. Our neighbors, friends, and family will show up. It will be a process to clean up, rebuild, and start again... but that process is already under way. My family along with the LeBlanc family have teamed up to reach beyond our hometown community to our baseball community to collect donations to help Lake Charles clean up and rebuild. Anything that is donated will go directly to families, local businesses, and churches. If I know anything about the people in Lake Charles... we will rise up, rebuild, and regrow better then we have ever been. God bless Louisiana!
