Children shouldn’t die from this disease. But millions do because they can’t get simple medicine that could save their lives. Until recently, Akokote wouldn’t have got the treatment she needed to beat pneumonia. Her mum, Akuan, lost her first-born child the same way. Their community in Turkana, Kenya, is a long, expensive journey away from the nearest health centre. That’s where Zipporah comes in. She’s a community health volunteer who spots childhood illnesses fast, sometimes using simple – and genius – techniques. Zipporah can identify fast breathing (a key symptom of pneumonia) using a thread of beads and a stopwatch. She watches the child’s chest and, each time it lifts, moves a bead along a string. She knew Akokote had pneumonia when she reached the red beads before the time was up. “She was breathing heavily,” says Zipporah. “This was the worst case that I’ve encountered.” She referred Akokote to the health centre where – to her mum’s relief - she got the medicine she needed to make it through. “I thought my daughter was going to die... now her condition has improved,” says Akuan. “The community health volunteers act as our doctors during emergencies. Debt-ridden farmers from Indias southernmost state of Tamil Nadu stage a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar area by holding a mouse in their mouths as food options if the government fails to declare drought relief packages and waive farm loans in New Delhi on March 2017 The Tamil Nadu government has demanded Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre for the drought-hit farmers. However, according to reports, the Centre has allocated just Rs 2,000 crore so far. Suicide by poor farmers is a major political issue in India where over 10,000 of them ended their lives in 2019. However, the government told Parliament that it has no data on farmers suicide as many states do not maintain such account. The Indian Parliament recently passed two farm bills aimed at improving the condition of farmers. Meet Vaida, Fatianca, and Querida 👋 These women are a few of the local farmers who have worked with us for many years planting coffee on Mount Gorongosa. Vaida (left) has been with us for ten years, first as a volunteer in the rainforest reforestation project and later helping to shape the #GorongosaCoffee initiative. From the start, she was clear that a reforestation initiative would only be successful if it also helped local farmers feed their families. The answer, it turns out, was coffee! Vaida was hired to run the coffee and native tree nursery at the top of Mount Gorongosas waterfall. Today, she works five days a week and is responsible for over 200,000 coffee seedlings and 20,000 rainforest trees. The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. Meet Mashe Kaimana. Mashe is a highly skilled basket weaver in the Village of Xakao. She belongs to a basket making cooperative with other women; baskets are a part of farming life in the Okavango Panhandle. They are used traditionally for storing seeds, for carrying goods, and for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. Weavers use palm fibers and source their dyes from plant roots, bark, and sometimes mauve-hued fungus found in sorghum husks. Each basket requires intricate weaving and can take weeks to complete. The patterns are either abstract or symbolic of the local environment and wildlife. As an elephant economy emerges in the Panhandle, perhaps more and more baskets will begin to reflect coexistence between people and elephants 🇧🇼🐘 📷: A.
