The World Health Organization (WHO) admits that oral polio vaccines are giving African children polio but hasnt said a word about the annually reported tens of thousands of cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), a debilitating condition with a clinical picture virtually identical to polio. In the U.S., childhood paralysis may not be documented on the same scale as in Africa or India, but it has attracted notice. In countries that use the oral polio vaccine, the CDC has no problem acknowledging that AFP is associated with vaccine-derived poliovirus. In the U.S., however, the use of another type of polio vaccine has allowed officials to frame the story very differently. The CDC has assiduously avoided mentioning one iatrogenic (medically induced) cause that is staring the agency in the face: 70 years of published studies along with manufacturers’ package inserts documenting a trail of polio-like symptoms (ranging from myelitis, numbness, pain and limb paralysis) following vaccination. On this day in September, 2015, world football witnessed a memorable protest by a national team to inflict administrative change. A protest commonly known as “FAM Bangsat” (FAM Bastards). They say this is where the rise of the Malaysian Football began after 30 years of stagnation and mismanagement under the leadership of FAM at that time. The 2018 World Cup / 2019 Asian Cup Qualifying Round match between the two teams had to be stopped by Hong Kong referee Liu Kwok Man in the 88th minute after a handful of supporters believed to be Ultras Malaya threw flares and rocket firecrackers into the field. The riot report caught the attention of the international media- the likes of the BBC, Daily Mirror and The Guardian as well as international news agencies such as AFP and Reuters, thus giving a negative perception of Malaysia worldwide. But this isn’t the first time this happened for the national team and has happened in several matches before. Another notable game was during an international friendly match between Malaysia and the Philippines at the Selayang Municipal Council Stadium in March 2014 resulting in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) fining the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) US $ 10,000 (now RM43,173) for aspects of security negligence. Earlier, FAM was fined US $ 35,000 (now RM151,108) for problems with supporters during the first semi-final meeting of the AFF Suzuki Cup Football Championship 2014 between Malaysia and Vietnam at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Dec 7, 2014. In the first two weeks of the lockdown, I almost died of anxiety because I am not used to restrictions. I was collecting images of issues related to the Pandemic but didnt know what I was going to do with it. Suddenly a new burst of energy occurred when I spoke to Chief Emeka Udemba. @emekaudemba our conversation lasted for a few minutes, but those few minutes were the few minutes I needed to change my fortune. I decided I was going to try and do something different this time around, i was going to play this time around and not work. I was going to examine peoples state of mind since the outbreak of this Pandemic. Guess what? I achieved that in my latest offering about the pandemic. I just played with myself and enjoyed the process of making this work. There was no pressure, but there were few challenges in the beginning. While I was on this, Friederike Moeschel @fmoeschel invited me to participate in a project by the Goethe institut Lagos @gi_Nigeria titled corona chronicles of Nigeria the project reassured me of the potential of my new work. We are leaving in a time where the world is on stand still since the events of the second world war. There is need for me as a story teller to capture this time for the future, to educate people who may never see this time or witness this event. As much as I am interested in history, the future is important to me as well. As you anticipate this new offering, here are some of the images i have not had time to share with you. Two years after the demise of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi court on Monday overturned five death sentences over his killing as a final ruling in the case. Five convicts were handed 20-year prison sentences, one person was sentenced to 10 years and two perpetrators received seven-year sentences for the killing. The verdict came after Khashoggis son stated that they had pardoned the killers. The 59 year old columnist had previously written highly critical articles on the Saudi government. Prince Mohammed was speculated to be involved in the assassination. The prince claimed that he had nothing to do with the murder, but acknowledged it happened under my watch. The Saudi government had called the assassination a rogue operation after repeatedly denying any involvement. Agnes Callamard, a UN Special Rapporteur stated, The Saudi Prosecutor performed one more act today in this parody of justice. But these verdicts carry no legal or moral legitimacy. They came at the end of a process which was neither fair, nor just, or transparent. JOHN ROBERT LEWIS (1940-2020) Terrible news hearing about Congressman Lewis passing. The true definition of a hero, especially at a time when we need people like him. The truth is theres never gonna be another person like him. You felt this when you were around him. Was fortunate enough to spend some time with him a few years ago over at San Diego Comic Con where his graphic novel March was released. And saw him lead the the entire convention floor made up of young children, as well as cosplay the same way he was dressed back in the historic 1965 Selma march. He was one of a kind. Wish I couldve spent more time with him but feeling more than fortunate to have graced his presence once in my life. Much love to his family and friends. And forever thankful to @acelii for this once in a lifetime assignment. In 1960, Pakistan struck gold. . A young German missionary nun, Dr. Ruth Pfau, was supposed join her missionary group in India but couldn’t get a visa. She landed in Karachi to apply from here. The process was going to take some time so she decided to explore the city and went to visit McLeod Road with some of the other nuns. At the time, that area was known as “Lepers Colony”. . One visit to that colony and Dr. Pfau decided to make Karachi her home, vowing to bring leprosy under control in Pakistan. She founded the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC). In 1996, The World Health Organization declared Pakistan had controlled leprosy making us one of the first countries in Asia to achieve this goal. She went on to open 157 leprosy clinics all over Pakistan and treated over 60,000 people. She even employed recovered leprosy patients who no one else would give jobs to. . In 2014, I rang up MALC with a request; I wanted to shadow Dr. Pfau. She was in her mid 80’s but still going on field visits! I was in awe of her and wanted to spend time with her, get to know her and photograph her. As luck would have it, she agreed. I spent the next several weeks following her around wherever she went and even ended up celebrating her 85th birthday with her. It was an incredible experience. She didn’t speak much, but her eyes and smiles spoke plenty. Everywhere we went, in any corner of the city, at any of her clinics, I could tell how much everyone loved her. Her warmth was undeniable. . After devoting more than 55 years of her life to fighting leprosy and being honoured with all the highest civilian awards Pakistan could bestow on her; Dr. Pfau breathed her last on the 10thof August, 2017. . This journey teaches me about deep Pacific Islander knowledge, knowledge that could never doubt that climate change is real. I owe my gratitude to Miri, who came to speak to me after the kava ceremonies and Talanoa in Navua villages, where only local men and guests are able to speak. She walked with me, telling me the stories of how the land disappearing, showing me the pathways that were now underwater, and singing to bless us as we left. She knows the way they grow food will need to change soon, the salt from the sea does damage to her crops, the very crops that sustain the life of the village. We are finally resuming activities at the studio, after a long time not working. I was very concerned about our community, especially about our elders. We made the hard decision to close temporarily and keep everyone safe. Many of you have been asking about my next online trunk show. Now that we can get back to work, we are hoping to make enough pieces by mid-August. I expect to hold my next sale then. To get through our current situation and to hopefully keep our practice alive, I’m hoping to hold a trunk show every 3 or 4 months, depending on how many pieces we are able to produce. For the first time, I will also be offering natural dyed yarn for sale. This will be an opportunity for all weavers, knitters, and for all fiber lovers who like to work with material that comes from living sources. This week, Human Rights Watch released a report on people with disabilities dying in Western Australian prisons. To coincide with the launch, we’re posting comments from activists and partner organizations who work on this issue. Hannah McGlade, Associate Professor, Curtin University and Expert Member, UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues: “Aboriginal people have been dying in custody for too long and its important that Human Rights Watch has investigated Aboriginal deaths and mistreatment and made recommendations in response. Over 25 years ago, Aboriginal people called for a Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and to this day many recommendations have been unimplemented. This is particularly the case in Western Australia, which has the highest rate of Aboriginal incarceration in the nation, and possibly the world. Its time we took human rights more seriously as we are bound to do under the human rights treaties that we signed. This is our country, and Aboriginal lives matter. “The government should implement the findings of the Australian Law Reform Commission inquiry Pathways to Justice, there is systemic and structural bias and discrimination in the criminal justice system and too many people, especially vulnerable people such as women, children and youth, are being sent to prison under outdated punitive laws, particularly the mandatory detention laws. Durante la jornada realizamos además un encuentro de trabajo junto al @minfrapba, el municipio y la empresa Gades, en el que pusimos en común los avances en los relevamientos de los artefactos de gas de las viviendas, y llevamos a cabo la fiscalización de las obras reactivadas en el distrito, que comprenden: mejoramiento habitacional y de la infraestructura de servicios, puesta en valor de la plaza central y la cancha Villegas y readecuación de gas en el barrio Presidente Sarmiento. Asimismo, en el barrio Carlos Gardel se está planificando la terminación de viviendas y la construcción de espacios públicos. Estas obras forman parte del proyecto integral de urbanización de los barrios, que beneficiará en forma directa a más de 2.000 familias. De las actividades participaron, por parte del OPISU, la Directora Provincial de Integración Urbana, Soledad del Cueto junto al inspector de obras de infraestructura y funcionarios de la gestión municipal. BREAKING NEWS : ANIMALS SURRENDERED – On Thursday, Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a nonprofit animal protection organization, assisted the Henry County Sheriffs Department with the removal of 622 animals living in horrendous conditions on a property in Buchanan, TN; where a toddler was also found living in a cage. In the room where the child was found, there were also large snakes, some of which were ten feet long; as well as mice, rats, and other small animals. The property owner and two others living in the trailer were arrested and taken to the Henry County Jail. They have been charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated cruelty to animals, cruelty to animals, manufacturing of marijuana, as well as other charges related to weapons found on the property. Additional charges are pending, and all three individuals are being held with a $300,000 bond each. On Saturday, the owner of the animals agreed to surrender 100% of the animals seized on this property. Animal Rescue Corps dubbed this rescue Operation Caged Hell. - @arcorps on Instagram

Mentally, emotionally, all of this hasn’t been easy as well. The first few months of the pandemic was especially overwhelming, even crippling. Too many things were going on, and I was not prepared to work through it. Until now, my only way through has been to just take it day by day. That’s the only way I can stay sane. Simply put, our role is to document. For me as a photojournalist, it’s to document news, daily life, and stories of Filipinos; to document history as it happens. To an extent, especially now that most people are locked inside their homes, what we photograph is literally what the public sees. Our photographs are literally windows to the world. The death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Delhi after four men raped her in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, has led to outrage in political circles. Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal demanded that the accused be hanged. “In Hathras, four men brutally raped a 19-year-old girl. They broke her spine and cut her tongue. She died in Delhi today. Everyday, women are falling prey to the crimes and the government is least bothered.” Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi said there have been several incidents of rape in Hathras, Shahajahanpur and Gorakhpur in the recent past. “There is no sign of any safety for women. Criminals are roaming freely. The murderers of this girl should get the strictest punishment.” Gandhi told Chief Minister Adityanath that he was accountable for the safety of women in the state. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav condemned the incident, adding: “There is no hope left from this insensitive government.” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the death of the woman was a matter of shame for the country. “It’s highly sad that so many daughters are being sexually assaulted and we have not been able to protect them. From building unpermitted roads and workcamps, and despoiling protected wetlands, the violations are in clear contravention of BC’s environmental regulations as well as the company’s own policies. It’s another case of Indigenous Peoples having to enforce their rights – and hold companies operating in their territory accountable – using their own resources. Korail is the largest informal settlement in Bangladesh and is home to over 100,000 residents. These urban farmers and daily-wage earners fall among the millions of Bangladeshis who lost jobs and have no source of income due to COVID-19. Many of these women are coping with food insecurity by relying on their existing urban farming practices to feed and sustain themselves. Só conseguimos realmente saborear o valor da vida, quando somos postos à prova por sensações e emoções que, no nosso dia-a-dia são desconhecidas. Todos nós, temos um momento na vida em que sentimos que nos falta alguma coisa para nos sentirmos completos. Foi em 2014 que senti isto pela primeira vez. Sabia que existiam outros lugares onde realmente precisavam de mim e onde o meu trabalho seria fundamental para a felicidade de outros. Fiz as malas e lá fui eu até à Colômbia para momentos únicos de partilha e solidariedade. Uma das experiências mais enriquecedoras para o ser humano que nos permite ver muito mais para além do que o nosso próprio umbigo. Desse lado, já fizeram alguma acção de voluntariado?
