In the winter, more thyroid is needed to maintain a normal rate of metabolism (Ray Peat, 2019). ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 😮STRESS INCREASES SEROTONIN OUTPUT IN RAPHE NUCLEI:⁣⁣⁣ Stress triggers adaptive and maladaptive changes in the central nervous system. It has been shown that cortisol/stress can increase tryptophan hydroxylase mRNA, leading to greater serotonin output from L-Tryptophan (Chamas et al., 2004). ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👁HIGH SEROTONIN IMPAIRS GLUCOSE CONTROL:⁣⁣⁣ The serotonin transporter (SERT) function is to recycle or remove (more accurately) serotonin from the synapse; effectively rendering it inactive. “Your emotions are showing up on the scale”⁣ ⁣ ^ direct quote from me to a client this week.⁣ ⁣ She was experiencing an unusually high-stress week due to a recent injury + other life events.⁣ ⁣ And now, she was stressing about the scale being up a couple pounds.⁣ ⁣ Aka stress on stress on stress.⁣ ⁣ I shared with her the WHY behind the scale weight increases and how it’s related to her stress levels (we aim to EDUCATE at @kjocoaching)⁣ ⁣ And then literally said “I should make this an Instagram post”⁣ ⁣ So here we are lol⁣ ⁣ I’ve talked about stress at LENGTH before.⁣ ⁣ Specifically how it’s compounding from all areas of your life:⁣ ⁣ Dieting is a stressor.⁣ ⁣ Training hard is a stressor.⁣ ⁣ Work is a stressor.⁣ ⁣ Arguing is a stressor.⁣ ⁣ Etc, etc, etc.⁣ ⁣ IT’S ALL STRESS.⁣ ⁣ Too much of it, all the time, can have some nasty negative side effects for things like your immune system, thyroid, wound healing, calcium absorption, cognition, blood pressure, sleep…⁣ ⁣ Anddddd that pesky number on the scale.⁣ ⁣ Stressing out can increase the hormone cortisol, which influences fluid retention and the amount of water weight you’re carrying around.⁣ ⁣ If you’re skimping on water and food when you’re stressed, this can exacerbate the issue further.⁣ ⁣ Or if you’re overeating, especially with carbs, this can show up on the scale in the form of water or food volume.⁣ ⁣ MY HOPE is that even just better understanding your bodily processes and that it’s truly “just water weight” will start to decrease your stress a bit.⁣ ⁣ But here are some other things you can try ⤵️⁣ ⁣ **Depending on the severity of your stress and coping ability, you may need just 1 or maybe more of these**⁣ ⁣ 👉Consider taking a deload week (reduce your training volume and cardio)⁣ ⁣ 👉Look at your situation - is there anything you can offload to someone else or say no to?⁣ ⁣ 👉Work on your mindset 🧠 Research indicates that teaching people to view stress as “enhancing” rather than “debilitating” significantly improves cortisol levels⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⚠️ 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗮𝘁: cortisol/stress is NOT inherently BAD. How does stress impact the skin physiologically? Psychological stress and skin are closely linked, I often say to my patients ‘stress causes skin disease and skin disease causes stress’. The brain has a stress-activated pathway that causes release of various chemicals and hormones that drive inflammation both in the body and the skin. Feelings of emotional distress lead to the release of a stress hormone (cortisol), which is known to affect the immune system (making the skin less able to defend itself), drive allergic responses, delay healing and disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. The effects seen on the skin can vary, including feeling red, dry and itchy, as well as the formation of lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, signs of premature aging and dull skin. Short-term stress (e.g. feeling anxious before a presentation/exam) can cause temporary problems like flushing, itching and sweating. Long-term (or chronic) stress however results in the body entering a permanent ‘stress-response’ state, which can aggravate existing skin problems through a poor natural immune response and ongoing inflammation. For example, high levels of stress are associated with a higher severity of skin disease in people with #psoriasis and #eczema.
