IJN (S) Kaga ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaga (加賀) was an aircraft carrier built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and was named after the former Kaga Province in present-day Ishikawa Prefecture. Originally intended to be one of two Tosa-class battleships, Kaga was converted under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty to an aircraft carrier as the replacement for the battlecruiser Amagi, which had been irreparably damaged during the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Kaga was rebuilt in 1933–1935, increasing her top speed, improving her exhaust systems, and adapting her flight decks to more modern, heavier aircraft. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------The ship figured prominently in the development of the IJNs carrier striking force doctrine, which grouped carriers together to give greater mass and concentration to their air power. A revolutionary strategic concept at the time, the employment of the doctrine was crucial in enabling Japan to attain its initial strategic goals during the first six months of the Pacific War. Kagas aircraft first supported Japanese troops in China during the Shanghai Incident of 1932 and participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War in the late 1930s. With other carriers, she took part in the Pearl Harbor raid in December 1941 and the invasion of Rabaul in theSouthwest Pacific in January 1942. The following month her aircraft participated in a combined carrier airstrike on Darwin, Australia, helping secure the conquest of the Dutch East Indies by Japanese forces. She missed the Indian Ocean raid in April as she had to return to Japan for repairs after hitting a reef in February. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Characteristic Type : Aircraft Carier Displacement : 38,200 tons Length : 247.65 m Speed : 28 knots (52km/h) Armor : Belt : 152 mm Deck : 38 mm Propulsion : 4 shafts, 4 geared Aircraft carried: 90 (total)72 (+18 in storage) 21 Mitsubishi A6M Zero, 27 Aichi D3A, 27 Nakajima B5N #imperialnavy #japanese #ijnkaga #hirohito #ww2 #ship #aircraftcarier #giantship #banzai #nippon - @worldhistory_id on Instagram

WHERE IT ALL STARTED: Heres a photo taken at now-called Chennault in 1940, when the federal government bought the property to build an advanced flying school for single-engine fighter pilots, the Lake Charles Army Flying School.⠀ ⠀ A description accompanying the photo reads: The airport will have six training ships and 350 private ships will use the airport. Erection of the airport buildings, of which there will be seven, six hangars and an administration building, have not yet been started. Harry E. Watson, airport manager at Lake Charles, has been designated as flight contractor in the national defense program.⠀ #ThrowbackThursday #lakecharleshistory #chennault - @chennaultair on Instagram

- Season 8 in a nutshell.

- this is camboinhas, an argentine cargo ship that got stuck in piratininga beach in 1958, in the city of niterói, neighboring rio de janeiro. Fun fact: the tug that was going to take him out also got bogged down. Now the beach is called camboinhas

Among the various aircraft types to fly from #aircraftcarriers, some were ill-suited to the task and should probably have been left to long runways ashore. The Supermarine Seafire was one such aircraft. A Navalized version of the legendary #Spitfire, it was thought that the #Seafire would see similar success in a carrier-based interceptor role. But despite the Spitfire’s success, the initial versions of the Seafire struggled to endure the extreme stresses placed upon it in during regular carrier operations and lacked power at low altitudes. Later versions received strengthened landing gear and engines that produced more power at sea level. To help shorten the takeoff runs, they were equipped with auxiliary rockets which could be fired to produce extra thrust, though they were rarely used due in part to pilots’ very legitimate fears of an asymmetric ignition. As power was added in the form of the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, pilots soon learned that the Seafire’s rudder and landing gear weren’t quite up to the task of handling the additional power, and a number of Seafires were written off in takeoff and landing accidents. After one tour of the far east, all but three of one squadron’s Seafires were declared unserviceable due to damage such as the rear fuselages wrinkling from the high stresses of carrier landings. Later versions gradually addressed the many shortcomings with ever-heavier modifications, which proved to be band-aids to an imperfect base design, and crashes continued. The crashes are that much more tragic when one considers the time and effort it took to build each Seafire; the beautiful elliptical wing, for example, introduced much greater complexity to the build process due to each wing rib being a unique size. The Seafire’s last combat role took place in the Korean War, which must have made it seem like a quaint yet beautiful anachronism next to the F-86 jets that were coming onto the scene. Today, fewer than ten of the original 2,646 Seafires remain, one of them exposed to the elements and baking in the sun at a museum in Myanmar. - @cessnateur on Instagram
