Many commonly eaten plant based foods are high in iron. In fact, some of the top iron sources are vegan. So why are vegan and vegetarian diets dismissed by disapproving omnivores as “anemic?” Not understanding the science behind nutrition is what leads to common misconceptions in plant based diets. So let’s set things straight: ________________________ Iron is an essential nutrient because it helps red blood cells deliver oxygen to the body. However, taking too much iron can result in iron overload. Excess iron can lead to a number of complications, so its important to keep track of your intake. ________________________ There are two types of iron: 1⃣ Heme iron, which is found in animals (meat, poultry, and fish) 2⃣ Non-heme iron, which is from plants. Heme iron is better absorbed than non-heme iron. However, it is easier to overload on heme iron than non-heme iron. Interestingly enough, vegans and vegetarians are no more likely to become anemic than an omnivore. There’s also evidence that shows that low-normal iron (which is what vegans and vegetarians store) are actually beneficial and lower rates of heart disease and cancer. ________________________ Now that we know vegan iron is non-heme iron, it’s just as (if not more) important to focus on iron absorption than to just eat a lot of iron rich foods. Here are some tips: 1⃣ Combine Vegan (non-heme) iron foods with foods rich in Vitamin C. Even better is to eat foods that are rich in both iron and Vitamin C like leafy greens, broccoli, and tomato sauce. 2⃣ Avoid hefty meals and eat smaller amounts throughout the day to maximize absorption. 3⃣ Avoid absorption inhibitors like coffee and tea 1-2 hours before and/or after a meal. ________________________ Sadly, spinach which is very high in iron, also contains oxalates that block absorption. This weeks Transformation Tuesday is WW Member Robyn @woolly1_ww who has lost an amazing 64.9kg! Joined: Jan 2017 Joined to: be fit and healthy to travel the world in my retirement. Used to: be exhausted all the time. Meals were simple but huge and I craved sweet and fatty foods in between for energy. There were so many things I couldnt or didnt do because of my size, like swim with my son at the beach. Now I: plan and eat healthy meals from all the food groups and have enough to satisfy my appetite without going overboard. Nothing is off limits, but I have those foods in moderation now. I have so much energy that I can go all day without needing to sit down. I feel like I have my life back. Im proud: that I actually weigh less now than Ive ever weighed since I was 12 years old. This time (yes, Im a repeat offender) I have a positive mindset and realise that this is the lifestyle for me. I feel healthy and fit and Im happy in my (very loose) skin. Food plan: Green 💚 all the way from me. It keeps me accountable and encourages me to eat loads of veggies. My best advice: Dont let the amount you have to lose prevent you from staying the distance. Set small goals and reward yourself each time you achieve them. Take small steps and forget about climbing the mountain. Youll get there in time. There’s no hurry because this has to be for life. Weight loss: In 2017 I was a digital only member and lost 34 kgs. At the beginning of 2018 I joined my local Workshop to help with inspiration and keep me on track. Your body requires dietary fats (Lipids). Fat provides essential fatty acids that the body can’t produce on its own and must be consumed through polyunsaturated fats in our diet. Polyunsaturated fats provide two essential fatty acids: 1⃣ Linoleic Acid (LA) - Omega-6 2⃣ Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) Omega-3 ________________________ The U.S Institute of Medicine recommends an daily ALA intake of 1.6 grams for men and 1.1 grams for women. Diets should aim for a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1 of Omega-6 to Omega-3. The western diet, which is high in refined oils, consumes far too much Omega-6. Today, most people are averaging a ratio of 10:1 and even 20:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3. ________________________ But is eating more fish the the answer to balance? Not necessarily. Fish dont manufacture long chain Omega-3. Their diet is high in Omega-3 rich plant foods like algae. They eat them which their body converts to DHA and EPA. We can go straight to the source and avoid the host of health and environmental troubles that come from consuming fish. Fish oil is loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol. They’re highly concentrated sources of contaminants and pollutants. More recently, studies have shown that eating fish and taking fish oil supplements are not as beneficial to the brain and heart functions as previously thought. In fact, fish has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Consuming fish products is not sustainable as it leads to overfishing which impacts the entire eco system. ________________________ You can get your daily serving of Omega-3 by incorporating flaxseeds, chia seeds, kiwi, walnuts, kale, and other leafy greens into your diet. Many factors can hinder the body’s ability to convert omega-3 fatty acid to DHA and EPA, which is why it’s important to avoid overly processed foods and make sure youre getting the right balance of vitamins and nutrients in your diet. Vegan diets lacking Omega-3 may want to take DHA-rich micro algae supplements. Conversion is easier when you balance with healthy sources of Omega-6 rich foods like sesame seeds, tahini, edamame, wheat germ, and tofu. #VegansofIG - @vegansofig on Instagram

“I’ll never be able to make Lifetime, but I’ll just go as far as I can go, and I’ll be happy with that.” That was what I told myself when I signed up for Weight Watchers. 🏆Well guess what, I hit Lifetime! A goal I NEVER thought I would be able to get to! I don’t normally like to post about my weight because, honestly, I know it’s a slippery slope mentally for me. My weight has always been up and down, and I’ve spent a lot of time in prayer over the years about loving myself and the body I’m in and not comparing myself to others. (Check out my life verse Philippians 4:8.) Let me be clear, I think both of these photos are beautiful, and BOTH of them make me feel happy. My value is not wrapped up in what size clothes I was wearing in either of these. That being said, about a year ago, I decided I wanted to get healthier because I just felt tired and run down all the time. Some of that was from having a new baby and adjusting to life as a mom, but some of it was because of how I was eating. I know enough about myself to know I need a plan, so I joined #WeightWatchers. For me this has been the best plan both for my physical and mental health. It allows me to go at my own pace and make my own choices about what to eat. It’s not a crash diet where I had to cut out all of the foods I love. It’s a lifestyle change. (Yes, I still eat cheese, raw cookie dough, and hot fudge straight out of the jar on a fairly regular basis. Corona stress eating is hard. LOL) Added bonus, the husband and baby have also benefited from these healthy switches. If I want Tucker making healthy food choices, Cory and I have to be an example. ⬇️I’m down 69lbs! But even more importantly than the weight loss, I now have so much more energy to live out God’s purpose for my life. My word of encouragement is to please remember that you need to be in the right head space and love yourself before pursuing a weight loss program; you are fearfully and wonderfully made as is! So I’ve actually lost 7 lbs despite 4 lbs it says based off of the pictures. SW:181 CW:174 GW:160 I have been struggling with weight for years especially after having Zadriyan. I’ve been on both sides of being too skinny and being too big. It’s been 3 years and I finally saw a doctor after she kept saying “ Z come see me 😂😂 “ One of my problems was that I have reactive hypoglycemia which is where I have low blood sugars within 4 hours after eating. A problem I didn’t know I had. This started when I was pregnant but was over looked by my OB as a pregnancy symptom and I was just told I need to eat more lol I had to eat every 2 hours. If I didn’t I got shakey, sometimes I would faint, couldn’t concentrate, dizzy, sweaty. it continued after my pregnancy. Since that was happening I would over eat to try to stop myself from feeling that way. I’d even get up in the middle of the night because my sugar would be low .I was doing that to myself for 3 years and wondering why I couldn’t keep the weight off. That was one problem. So before we started talking about weight loss I had to get testing done we had rule out PCOS, thyroid condition and growth hormone. I didn’t have any problems except for a growth hormone deficiency ( had to get them damn tests done twice and they still came back abnormal ) Doctor couldn’t figure out why I had a GH deficiency so she discussed my case with another specialist. ( Shit, I couldn’t understand how I was coming up GH deficient either because I’m built like a milk jug and obviously I have no problem growing because this stomach ain’t stop growing even AFTER the baby but okay ) The specialist said that my BMI is the reason my lab came back like that so I need to start losing weight and to keep an eye on my levels. So here we are. I am down 7 lbs. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 8 MONTHS OF EFFORT ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Whilst I was pregnant I gained 24kg. Yes a whole 24kg. Apparently the average woman gains between 10-15kg whilst pregnant but I don’t know if I trust these statistics anymore. Those who know me know I love my food and I throughly enjoyed eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I knew I was gonna “snap back” so I enjoyed my food⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I remember taking that pic 4 weeks after I had my daughter and I was so perplexed as to why I hadn’t gone back to “normal”. ⁣⁣ I remember my first gym session after labour and I felt like I couldn’t do anything no lunge, no squat, no bench, literally nothing that involved my core. Defeated I went on the cross trainer and was dying after 6 minutes. I ended up leaving the gym early (mummy duties) and walking home thinking OMG this ain’t “light work”⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ Looking at these pictures I feel so proud. It’s not the 12 weeks I thought it would be. BUT it’s a physical photo of where my continuous effort and a whole leap of pushing @jumpingjegede can get me. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I know it sounds simple. But for real. Just keep showing up even if it’s 20 minutes. Some days your not going to want to train. Some days you’ll feel exhausted. Some days you might eat the house. But that’s okay. As we start out on a new journey or take on new tasks, the situation in front of us can seem like a mountain! But you wake up everyday and you have choices to make... Today, I choose to be better than yesterday. Sept. 2018- I was still an emotional tornado 🌪 recovering from a very challenging chapter in my life and I hadnt committed to getting healthier yet. Sept. 2019- I was in my 9th month of Crossfit @unitedperformanceftc and was tracking my macros for about 5 months...down 39 lbs! Share this with a friend that would appreciate this! ... Tag your gym partners!! . . . Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins. Gluten free, grain free, almost added sugar free (the chocolate chips have some). These are one of my favorite sweet treats to make. They are super easy and a great way to use up some old bananas 🍌 . . All you have to do to make these muffins is throw all the ingredients minus the chocolate chips in a blender and pour it in a muffin tin. Top with a few chocolate chips. Bake at 400F for 8 minutes. Each muffin has around 100 calories if you make 24 of them. A lot of these calories come from the peanut butter. You could certainly get creative and come up with some ways to reduce the amount of peanut butter if you are interested in being more calorie conscious. There are other nut/seed butters that are lower calorie but more expensive. . . Give these a try next time you have some bananas that are about to go bad. Make sure you understand that while these use healthier ingredients they are still very easy to overeat. You need to be cautious you stay within your goals. Because they are mini muffins, it is super easy to just pop them in your mouth mindlessly. Just because they use bananas and peanut butter as the main ingredients doesn’t make them “healthy”. Considering what’s going on in World, I was hesitant to share this. Then I discovered that so many women are affected by this thing and my experiences *may* be helpful on their journey. One can only dream. So with that being said, here goes... July of 2019, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos). It’s basically due to a hormonal imbalance but I won’t get into all the medical jargon. For quite some time I had dealt with bouts of depression, digestive issues, mood swings, acne, and uncontrollable weight gain... y’all I gained 10 pounds in a single month. TEN POUNDS!! My doctor basically told me that there was no cure and pretty much nothing I could do to about my condition. At best she could treat the symptoms with medications that would give me side effects that were worse then the issue itself. I was crushed. Because I was on the road to becoming overweight combined with an imbalance of hormones I was at a greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, uterine cancer, and infertility amongst many other complications. As far as I was concerned there was nothing I could do about it. That is until I was introduced to one thing... I’ll tell you all about it in the video below!
