Today, we closed the gardens for the winter. We cleaned out and gleaned from our p-patch gardens and our SAGE garden at our Greenwood Senior Center. Thanks to volunteers from Discovery Church and Kathy Pruzan for all their help. Thank you to ALL our volunteers during the entire growing season. We grew 196 lbs of produce that went to our delivered lunches to seniors. This is the most we have ever grown in a season! Im Herbst heißt es dann Endspurt: Die Südtiroler Obstbauern beginnen mit der Ernte. Wir haben euch bereits erklärt, dass mittels eines Reifetests die „inneren Werte“ der Äpfel 🍎 wie Zucker, Fruchtfleischfestigkeit, Stärkeabbau und Säure ermittelt werden und anhand dieser Reifeparameter die sortentypischen Erntefenster festgelegt werden. Die Ernte startet in Südtirol Mitte August mit der Sorte Gala und endet mit der spätreifen Sorte Cripps Pink (Clubapfel Pink Lady®) im November. Die Äpfel werden sorgsam und ganz traditionell von Hand „geklaubt“, wie der Südtiroler sagt. Meistens sind mehrere Durchgänge nötig, um alle Äpfel abzuernten. Auch unsere fleißigen Apfelbauern Iris und Joachim haben mit der Ernte der Gala begonnen. Die Äpfel werden mit der Hand vorsichtig gepflückt und in den Erntekorb gelegt. Sobald dieser voll ist, wird er in der Großkiste entleert und dann wieder befüllt. Bei unserer Apfelbäuerin Iris hat heuer leider auch der Hagel Schaden hinterlassen. A week and a half ago we loaded up a truck with all our chocolate machines and away they went to our soon to be new factory in Charleston, UT.⠀ ⠀ We’ve been building to this point for the last 6 months but today brought on the emotions. New beginnings are here but it’s always a little tough to say goodbye to the old. This 2,500 sq ft space on Iron Horse drive has done us proud for 5 years. It’s been our chocolate factory home with so much growth and support along the way. Its moments like these that really make you pause for thought on how far we’ve come and the lessons learned.⠀ ⠀ I’m so incredibly excited for our next step in our chocolate journey but I think I’ll always kinda miss our little space in PC that was a dream we reached for back in Denver that we brought to life. In previous years, fall at The Farm has meant apple picking, corn-mazing, animal petting, pumpkin hunting, and family fun. It goes without saying, this year is different. While we understand the powerful human need to celebrate the annual harvest and the glorious land that we have farmed for over a century - the safety of our employees and customers comes first. This was an extremely difficult decision for us, but Hickory Nut Gap Farm will not be open for our traditional fall activities. Our online store offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the tastes of autumn, including our crisp, local apples and cider. You can also shop for grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, other local grocery items, and sign up for our growing CSA program. We will also be offering private tours and farm experiences for companies, organizations, or other groups (using COVID-safe protocols).
