We hiked Old Rag Mountain today and as promised it was challenging, exhilarating, and worth the climb. Disappointingly, some shirtless dudes heckled us for wearing our masks on the trail, and a kid laughed at my slow and steady rock climbing (sigh). But we managed not to throw any dudes or children off of the mountain which may have been the biggest accomplishment of the day. I had this patient who is rather immobile and ill and requires frequent care. She is also very wise, highly feisty, initially fooled me and others completely into thinking she couldn’t understand us (her pain and lethargy impacts her willingness at times to be expressive). She is the most medically complex patient I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with, work with, learn with, cry with, laugh with, pray with, be accepting of pain with. She gestured me out of her room “get the hell out little girl”... many times at the beginning of her stay without even opening her eyes. Little by little with the aid of medicines and IV fluids and machines that do things for her failing body, her little but not so little personality has began to slowly shine through the storm of her endless comorbidities. One day she was scared and instead of shooing me out of her room (sometimes therapists are inherently scary to patients cause “therapy” generally translates to “get out of bed and move” although it is leaps and bounds more) she clutched onto my hand and spoke in between difficulty breathing “stay here ‘fast moving little one’ “ and so I did. I stayed until she fell back asleep and the next day she again called me “fast one” (I tend to do things quickly and with purpose - but also sometimes clumsily) which became my nickname. I’m straight up furious that we have children who are separated from their parents, and there’s a whole party who call themselves pro life and can actually say well I guess they should’nt have come here if they didn’t want their kids to be taken away from them. I’m appalled that a lot of those same people who are justifying separating children from their parents are the same ones I went on mission trips with when I was growing up. And I want to pull my hair out and scream when any person says there are no complications with pregnancies and that pregnancy cannot be life-threatening and therefore women should not have agency over their own bodies. Happy National South Carolina Day! Today we celebrate all that is this wonderful state-places, people, culture, food!! This was my favorite sight to see after our long drive moving here. I love this state. My favorite are the people, I love doors being held for me, I love talking to people while on line and connecting giving me an unbelievable sense of community. Today is my 3-yr travel nurse anniversary🎉🎉🎉 — I remember being a little nervous to hop into this lifestyle & adventure and see where it took me; but now I know without a doubt that it was the best decision for my nursing career & life I could’ve made. Three years ago I never would’ve guessed I’d be where I am today with all the adventures I’ve had, places I’ve been, lessons I’ve learned, ways I’ve grown, and people I’ve met🤗 — Travel nursing has given me the opportunity to work across the country in a variety of hospitals. It has taught me to adapt to new surroundings and work environments quickly. It has led me to so many wonderful coworkers. And it has helped me expand my knowledge and skills as a nurse💉💊 — In the last 3 years I have worked in five different states and have been able to travel to 20 different countries. I have discovered how much I love exploring and hiking the outdoors. I have done solo traveling both in and out of country. I have worked on pushing past my fear of heights by jumping off things (still working on this fear though🤪). I have learned that I really don’t like packing and unpacking so frequently. I have learned that there are good things waiting for you in every assignment; and I have learned to trust that God will never lead me to the wrong place🌎 — Out of all the places I’ve traveled, sites I’ve seen, and beauty I’ve encountered...the people I meet along the way are always what make this all so special. Goodbyes never get easier, but only seem to get harder. But how neat is it that I now have friends spread across the country? Friends that I know will take me in if I’m passing through or friends who ask if I want to go traveling? Another great hiking day! Chimney Rock State Park and our goal was to reach the top and early. We hiked a side trail to Hickory Nut Falls which is a 404 ft waterfall, then climbed 200 stairs up to the main road, then 500 more steps to the top of Chimney Rock. It’s about 20 minutes outside of Asheville, NC and at the “top of the rock” are beautiful views of Lake Lure. We went early to avoid any crowds, wore our masks on the stairs and got up and down early before it got to be busy. It’s a beautiful view at the top and crazy good work out for the legs and quads. As a small business in California, we are heartbroken that wildfires in our beloved home state have become an annual event. Our warehouse in Vacaville California had to be evacuated earlier this week due to poor air quality. The health and safety of workers of course comes first. Conditions are better today, and our warehouse is slowly trying to resume operations. Wed like to thank our amazing warehouse team for all of their hard work and dedication. Beyond her involvement with the Biden campaign she also works with the Alachua Conservation Trust for environmental advocacy and grant writing.
