- My cousin’s foot started turning necrotic after an infection caused by a callus. He had to go into surgery to get the dead tissue removed, but only after signing a waiver in case they needed to amputate. Everything’s as good as it can be right now.

TW sexual abuse, religion - I was raised with shame about my body, especially my breasts. From the time I was in middle school, family members told me I was a slut and I was sinful for having large breasts. That I was “tempting priests” with my body and I had to “cover up” for God. I never understood it. Didn’t God make my body? Didn’t priests know that? Why do priests get tempted by children? Then I grew up and I learned more. Then I had a child. And I finally felt like God did indeed make me in Her image. And that in feeding my child with my body was an act of The Divine. Breastfeeding has been devastatingly hard at times. But it has also been outstandingly healing. Of wounds I didn’t even know I had. Of religious trauma. Of body shaming. Of slut shaming. Of sexual assault. Of childhood sexual abuse. Of family judgment. And of self inflicted injury because of all of the above. My big fat boobies may cause others discomfort, but I no longer give a shit. My body created and nourished life. You’ve seen the signs as you’ve driven around town, reading “Heroes Work Here” and “Thank You Healthcare Heroes” and, possibly my personal favorite - “Not All Heroes Wear Capes.” 🦸‍♀️ ⁣ ⁣ As a doula, I find myself around medical professionals often - obstetricians, nurses, midwives, hospitalists, physicians assistants, and pediatricians - the list could go on and on! And, since anything medical is technically considered out of my scope of practice as a doula, my appreciation for these heroes runs especially deep. ⁣ ⁣ Even before the COVID-19 craziness began, but especially now in the midst of ever-changing policies and increased risks of exposure - medical professionals are a blessing to our communities. They are there when we need them - in ER rooms when our primary care physicians’ office is closed, at routine pediatrician checkups to answer our burdening parenting questions, and, where I encounter them perhaps the most - in labor and delivery rooms. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes, labor and birth throws us unexpected curveballs - and when that happens - we look to the OB, midwife, or nurse in attendance for guidance and answers. And, although we may not always feel enthusiastic about a medical professional’s advice about a particular intervention or suggestion, we can be confident that it is their ultimate desire for an outcome of a healthy mother and a healthy baby. 🤰🏼👶🏼 ⁣ ⁣ I think our favorite healthcare heroes need a little bit of encouragement on this Monday morning! The bond between a mother and her baby is unlike any other🤱🏻 . 🤰🏽 From the moment the embryo attaches, mom and baby are connected. From this point on, this little life depends completely on mom for oxygen, nourishment, protection, and support as he/she continues growing into a tiny person. Both mom and baby naturally work together to create an entirely new organ (the placenta) to support this growth. . 💉 The placenta connects moms blood supply to babys blood supply through the umbilical cord. This cord is jelly-like and has two arteries and one vein which moves blood between the two separate bodies. . 👶🏼 Once baby is born, his/her bloodflow changes, breathing begins, and the placenta and cord are no longer needed to keep baby alive. . 💕 But the connection between a mom and her baby continues long after the delivery of the placenta and the cutting of the cord. Babies know their mom. They know their smell and voice and they respond differently to mom than others. Everyone, please send my wife your best vibes and prayers if you pray. To say this pregnancy has been challenging would be an understatement. We didn’t announce we were pregnant for a long time, truthfully, because we weren’t sure what was going to happen. Nicole has been dealing with a massive fibroid for most of the pregnancy. It’s the biggest our doc has ever seen and we named him Mordy (aka Voldemort). Mordy banished her to bed rest since January. He’s been causing all kinds of scary moments for us: multiple frenzied rushes to the hospital, overnights. Heck, he’s the main reason I left a new job, to be home more and present with my family. In fact, three days before Heath was born we had to rush to the hospital due to another round of serious hemorrhaging, scared as can be, hoping for the best. We’re so thankful Heath came out healthy and happy, and a natural birth at that! He left Mordy in the dust. But my wife was back in the hospital two days ago, post birth, and needed immediate surgery. Now she’s back in again tonight, for a more serious surgery. Todo mundo tem medo, todo mundo tem receio de algo, eu confesso pra vocês que eu tinha muito medo da minha gravidez, eu tinha medo de piorar, eu tinha medo de Alice nascer com algum problema de saúde, eu tinha medo de não acertar cuidar dela, eu tinha medo de não acertar nem carregar ela, eu criava perguntas e sofrias com elas no meu psicológico, “ e se na hora do parto, der ruim e eu morrer “ “ e se, meu corpo não aguentar depois do nascimento dela e eu precisar que alguém cuide de mim? “ “ e se, eu tiver dificuldade em limpar e dá banho nela? “ foram muitas perguntas, muito choro. Eu via os exames dando tudo certo, o tempo gestacional passava eu não piorava, eu tive uma gravidez tranquila, sempre fui disposta, via algumas grávidas no mesmo tempo gestacional que eu, reclamando de coisas que eu nem sonhava em sentir, passou rápido, foi lindo, a ansiedade tomou conta, eu só contava os dias pra minha Alice nascer e eu ver o rostinho dela e enfim tirar todo medo do coração, foi uma agonia, arruma quarto, compra enxoval, ajeita isso, ajeita aquilo, queria tudo perfeito para a chegada dela. Eu já tava no hospital quando o hospital ligou “ Amanda, venha dia 23 em jejum já para ter sua bebê, dai respondi, oxe, eu já tô aqui de mala e cuia kkkk “ fiquei logo no hospital, então o grande dia chegou, eu tava tranquila demais, nem me reconhecia, eu pensava “ era pra eu tá apavorada, cadê meus medos? “ aí, Jesus entrou na frente e o controle de tudo estava nas melhores mãos. Quando Alice nasceu foi como se todas as minhas partes fragmentadas decorrentes de momentos difíceis que vivi se juntassem, as feridas foram regeneraras e eu me tornei uma nova mulher, uma mulher que agora se tornou mãe e conheceu o amor incondicional ao segurar seu filho no colo pela primeira vez. Eu tive rompimento da bolsa (perda de líquido) com 14 semanas de gravidez. A médica que me atendeu disse que o bebê não tinha chances e que faria um aborto. Caso contrario, eu arriscaria perder meu útero por infecção se seguisse com aquela gravidez. Decidi arriscar e lutar até quando houvesse vida! Fiquei 3 meses internada e cada segundo era uma conquista! Com 28 semanas(6 meses e meio) entrei em trabalho de parto. O médico da emergência me examinou e não se responsabilizou, mesmo estando em estado avançado de trabalho de parto, resolveram esperar outra média. Eu desesperada dizia que não havia mais tempo de esperar a “outra médica chegar”. (O bebê deveria nascer de parto cesárea pelo risco e prematuridade). Logo quando a médica chegou pediu para todos correr que o bebê estava vindo. E porque que as coisas não estavam prontas ainda? Foi tanto desespero me vestem me colocam na maca, espera elevador, desce..., quando eu descia eu sentia a pressão do bebê que nascendo e eu ia segurando, mesmo com muita dor, tentando não fazer força, Do contrario fazia força para segurar ele, pois ele não podia nascer ali. Sentia uns estralos dentro de mim. Ainda foram preparar a sala de cirurgia (serio isso?) Eu gritava: “não da tempo!!!” Uma enfermeira chegou junto e disse: “Não grita! Não vai ajudar com a dor” Eu gritei e disse: “Não é a dor física”. Cada minuto ali pareceram uma eternidade... Me colocaram na sala de cirurgia: “Não dá tempo, não”! “Já esta coroando....” Pensei que nasceria ele ali mesmo....não!!!! Ainda Me transferiram daquela sala para sala de parto normal. Entre os movimentos da cama para maca eu sentia ele descendo e a pressão de expulsão e eu o segurava dentro de mim. Na sala do parto normal e quando levantei as pernas ele saiu escorregando, nascendo sentado nas mãos da médica (ahhhh inclusive essa foi a mesma médica la no início dá minha internação que não me deu esperança. • Ele passou por 2 cirurgias. Ele foi muito guerreiro, batalhou cada segundo, alma gigante. 3 years ago I birthed my little man at home. The strength and determination mixed with the intention and absolute surrender it took was surreal. I didn’t know I had that part of me that was born that day. It was only after this totally empowering homebirth experience did I launch my coaching business and make the decision to not go back to my secure job. My son has taught me so much about surrender and strength and as I am approaching the birth of my first book I am leaning into this surrender. Letting go of the need to get it right and just sit in the gratitude of this experience. What do you wish for your children? . For me, I want to instill in them boundaries. Ones that I was missing with their dad, and ended so mentally traumatizing for me (financial abuse, emotional abuse, seeing sex workers while I had just given birth etc). So I never want my kids to ever have to experience that for years, and then come out of it fighting, wondering why we just didn’t say ‘no’, or listen to our own intuition. I want them to always know that they can leave, a party, a commitment, a job. That their boundaries are what matter, and people who cross those boundaries are the ones in the wrong, not them for enforcing them. What about you? What is the number 1 (or 10) things that you absolutely want for them when they become adults and navigate the world alone? . What would you say if I told you these photos of identical twins were taken on the same day when both boys were 6 days old? 👀 . 👶🏼➡️👶🏼 Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a pretty rare condition that can occur in identical twins (or even triplets) who share a placenta. . 📸 This amazing photo comes from @teddyandronnietttssurvivors (visit her page for more on their unique story and where they are now!) . So what exactly is TTTS, how is it diagnosed, and how is it treated? (This info comes from Cincinnati Childrens website) . 💕 TTTS occurs when abnormal blood vessel connections form in the placenta and allow blood to flow unevenly between the babies. This results in one twin (the donor) becoming dehydrated and not having enough amniotic fluid and the other (the recipient) to develop high blood pressure and produce more urine, thereby overfilling the amniotic sac. . *Fun fact: amniotic fluid is just babys pee!* . 💔 This leads to poor growth in the donor (so clearly the twin in the bottom photo) and can sometimes lead to heart failure in the recipient. . Diagnosis is confirmed with ultrasound, fetal MRI, and fetal echocardiogram. There are 5️⃣ stages, with 1 being the most mild and 5 being the death of one or both twins. . 🤰🏽 After diagnosis, the babies will need to be monitored frequently for signs that the condition is worsening. In some scenarios, fetal surgery may be required to save one or both babies. And in many scenarios, it may be necessary to deliver the babies early (the twins in this photo were born around 30 weeks) in which case, babies will require a NICU stay. . Often times new parents are surprised at how little it takes to feed their newborn. When they see the small amount of colostrum their body is producing in the first days after birth they will sometimes worry if that is in fact enough. Most of the time, it is! Your newborn only needs about 1-1.5tsp (5-7ml) of your colostrum in the first two days of life. By day 3 they are eating more, about 3/4oz-1oz (22ml-30ml) per feeding. More times than not your body is making enough for your newborn in those first few days. If you’re pregnant and planning to breastfeed, get informed about how your body works, what helps this process, what can hinder the process and how much your baby needs. Talking to a lactation consultant or finding a breastfeeding support group like La Leche League can be a great place to start. - @misty_intuitivebirth on Instagram

Thank you for sharing your inspired story Jo. . “I wanted to share my story and this very personal image because I hope it will inspire others who are going through a similar situation and for them to know that you should never give up on your dreams, and that you are never too young to check your boobs. . Being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 26, we knew that having a healthy baby might not have been possible but we never gave up hope. After years of chemo, radiotherapy and hormone treatment, my body clearly never gave up because only a month after my first cycle, I was actually pregnant. The feeling when we saw our sons heartbeat at 6 weeks old is indescribable. All of our dreams had actually come true but I knew the next 9 months were not going to be easy. I was constantly on edge and questioning if my body was actually going to be able to provide and grow a healthy baby. I felt unbelievably proud of myself and my body the first time I held my son in my arms. . Due to a mastectomy, only one of my breasts produced milk and therefore is more than double the size of the other one. At first, I was self-conscious about this as it’s pretty obvious. However, when I look at my son breastfeeding, I am reminded of how amazing my body is. My one ‘working’ boob has been able to produce enough milk for me to exclusively breastfeed Javi since the day he was born, which I think is just incredible. For me, there is no better feeling in the world, than when I am breastfeeding my son, knowing that I never gave up hope that one day I would be holding him in my arms. Our breastfeeding journey has not been an easy one and we have both struggled but for me it shows that with a bit of determination and patience, anything is possible.’’ . Two weeks ago this happened! 👶🏽💕 Noa Navin came into this world naturally on April 3rd, 2020 at 8:48pm German time weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces (3420g). It was the longest, toughest and most intense pain I’ve ever had to endure but I wanted our little girl to have the healthiest arrival possible - at home, unmedicated and alert. I could not have done it without the support of my amazing husband who was there with me every single second working with me and feeling every emotion that I felt. He was the first person to hold her and to tell me we had a little girl. 🥰 I can’t even describe how much I love you @seaneinhaus and I love seeing you transitioning beautifully into fatherhood. You are 4 cm dilated and you are going to have this baby Frozen in fear. Crippled in disbelief. One week before this event I sat in the same office explaining to my Obstetrician that things didnt seem right but was told that everything I was experiencing was normal. My concerns dismissed and a clearance to fly was written to travel to work. It will ALWAYS sting, no matter how much time passes. I did not challenge or question her advice. In my eyes at the time, the specialist knows best so everything is fine. I was a first time mum, what did I know?! I then went on to dismiss any other signs presenting themsleves as normal and did not back myself to stand up, speak up + demand more answers. I dont tell you this to feel anger or to feel sorry for me. I tell you this share my lessons in hope it will resonate with someone and potentially change the course of their life. The day my heart was broken. Was the day I found my voice. Trust was broken so I learnt to trust myself. It can be difficult to march to your own drum beat + listen to your instincts when the world around you is noisy. You learn to live life never being the same again. You learn to love harder and appreciate the simple things. You learn deep sorrow but also learn unspeakable joy. You learn that happy people have often experienced as much adversity as those who are unhappy. What sets them apart is that they have the good sense to manage their memories in a way that enriches their lives. No matter the tragedy look for the lesson. There will always be one! Today 8 years ago, a little baby boy was born. He was simply perfect 💙 but he was just born too early for this world. Maybe things could have been different but they werent. MECÔNIO Os bebês são nutridos e oxigenados dentro do útero pela placenta via cordão umbilical, no entanto, apesar de não ingerirem comida no útero, ele ingere outros materiais durante o crescimento fetal: células epiteliais intestinais, lanugo (cabelo), muco, líquido amniótico, bile e água. E tudo isso dá origem ao mecônio. Embora não seja tecnicamente o mesmo que cocô, ele é considerado a primeira evacuação do bebê e está presente nas fezes por alguns dias após o nascimento. ⠀ É bastante comum em trabalhos de parto mais longos ou com bebês de gestação mais longa, mas não significa necessariamente uma emergência médica, desde que a quantidade de líquido esteja adequada (para que dilua o mecônio e este não se torne espesso) e os batimentos cardíacos do bebê estejam dentro dos padrões de normalidade. Na maioria dos casos, nem a gestante nem a equipe médica ficará sabendo da presença do mecônio no líquido amniótico, a não ser que a bolsa estoure. Se a causa do mecônio for sofrimento fetal, isso será atestado através da alteração da frequência cardíaca fetal. ⠀ Importante: não é possível constatar a presença de mecônio na ecografia. O exame que possibilita avaliar a cor do líquido amniótico sem romper a bolsa se chama AMNIOSCOPIA e só é possível de ser feito quando já há alguma dilatação do colo do útero. ✨ WOMEN ARE MAGNIFICENT ✨ We are strong. We are capable. We are amazing! Do not fear birth. Prepare for it! Birth is a normal physiological process and a primal, sacred rite of passage. INFORMATION IS POWER // This account has been set up on the same principle as sex education - I would rather you were uncomfortable and not ignorant. Every birth only happens ONE time. It is a once in a lifetime event. There is no do-over. You only get one chance. Would you attempt to climb Mt Everest without thorough research, a support crew and preparation?... You would certainly not show up on the day and hope for the best! Yes, birth is a normal physiological, instinctive process, however we have been conditioned in such a way that many women have absolutely no exposure to birth and little, to no, ability to tap into these primal instincts. Please spend your time, money and energy researching pregnancy/birth/postpartum/breastfeeding. Birth trauma is very real and postpartum depression/post traumatic stress is very serious. Birth has become taboo, demonised and surrounded by messages of fear. I am frustrated and concerned with the dangerously high intervention rates. I am grateful for the science and technology available, in the event of true medical need, but are women told about the risks and side effects of intervention? Do women know they can refuse consent? You have the right to say no, the same way you can say no in the bedroom and the workplace. We have been failed by society, mass media and the current culture. All women deserve beautiful, empowered births. And to be nurtured postpartum. Surround yourself with beautiful, positive stories and messages of birth - they do exist and desperately need to rise to the surface to encourage, inspire and support women. As the wonderful Dr Michel Odent once said One cannot help an involuntary process. The point is not to disturb it. I really do believe we need to see images of birth.
