Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals has passed...Mr. Soul, he still is THE Mr. Soul in my book. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, lead singer of @tootsmaytalsofficial 1 of reggae’s foundational figures, died Friday in Kingston, Jamaica. #Foundation What the world needs today A little spiritual healing And everyones got to say Its gives a good feeling Spiritual healing In his early teen years, Toots moved to Trench Town. Whilst operating as a barber, Hibbert met Nathaniel “Jerry” Matthias and Henry “Raleigh” Gordon and they formed The Maytals vocal trio in 1961. They where such a TIGHT trio...it was a happy time, with other influential artists Delroy Wilson and Stranger Cole. Just an amazing time. Do The Reggay, which became the first song to brand the beat that followed rocksteady, which is Jamaicas most successful (musical) export. When asked about the origins of the word, reggay, shortly thereafter spelled reggae, Toots offered: Streggay was a slang word in Jamaica, it meant something that looked raggedy, scruffy so one day I was talking with Raleigh and Jerry and just changed the word to reggae and said, lets make music, lets do the reggae. Toots would always turn the positive into a negative. In the late 80s I was asked by Jones & Jones Productions Ltd. to open for Toots at the El Mocombo Club…it was a blessing to sit at sound check to listen to a man of such wisdom and inspiration, what an unforgettable experience that will stay with me forever. The important thing here in Toronto, is that we are blessed with 3 of the producers who toured and worked with Toots for many years, Carl Harvey (great guitarist and producer), Eddie Bullen (keyboards, producer extraordinaire) and Bernie Pitters (keyboards, toured over 11 years). The seed has grown to fruitful harvest….when you work with them I send my love and respect to them all. Please listen in tomorrow when I will be on @cbcq with Tom Power to remember Toots. My condolences to his family, his spirit is a blessing to me and so many of us on this planet. Good Bless Toots. #Blessings Jay Douglas #TootsandtheMaytals #TootsHibbert #GotToBeTough #GTBT #ReggaeMusic #Jamaica #OneLove #blessings - @jaydouglasmusic on Instagram

To anyone who does not support these protests around the county and the world, BLACK LIVES MATTER, you can ignore this no longer, and this is what actually happens. These are the brave protestors who were peacefully protesting in the streets of la only to be met with violence by the police. On our knees, hands up, chanting “hands up, don’t shoot”, we were able to drive them away because we were peacefully protesting. But that’s not the case all the time, so many videos of the police brutally attacking, shooting, tear gassing peaceful protestors. It’s absolutely insane, it’s a systemic problem that will never be addressed unless this happens. And it’s working! policy around the country is slowly changing as our voices are heard, yet it’s not enough, much more change has to happen. Sign petitions, vote!, share information, donate, protest, have those hard talks with friends and family. In conclusion black lives matter, put aside your privilege and try to see the world how it truly is. - @jamieamimoto on Instagram

I grew up on ocean ave and parkside right by prospect park, FLATBUSH..., Not Prospect west or Prospect lefferts Gardes ...FLATBUSH!!! it is a heavily black american/Caribbean neighborhood (until recently). Yesterday I was informed there was going to be a protest starting right where I grew up. I was tempted to go just to make sure my family was safe because of what I saw happening in Bed Stuy but then I had a thought. WHO ORGANIZED THIS PROTEST??🤔🤔 All the protest/riots i was involved with in Flatbush as a youngin were spontaneous.  We were angered by something police did and we responded the only way we knew how because nothing else worked. We never organized protests!! Its a visceral reaction to injustice. My old hood is currently experiencing heavy gentrification at a rapid pace and something told me it wasnt going to be like protests of my yesteryear. I get a picture from my fam and what do I see.. a crowd filled with  most of the same white people gentrifying the neighborhood. Do you know how insanely absurd and contradictory that is? Im here to protest the brutality black people are experiencing all while pushing them out of their neighborhood at a rapid pace!! I knew it was going to flop.. they had no idea where to go. They barely made it 5 blocks before they were broken up by the piglets... smh. Lonnng story short. Know your organizers and know their intentions. Stop blindly following random protest  groups unless you know their ideologies, make sure its aligned with yours!!! One thing we must do and learn from all of this is ORGANIZATION!!! People of the historical city, Masuleh, hold a religious ceremony for Imam #Hussain - the third Imam of Shia - called Alam Bandan in #Muharram the 6th. Though living in other cities, people who are originally from Masuleh, gather there to join the ceremony.‌ ‌ The most significant part of this #ceremony is held in the main mosque of the city, called O-ne-ben-ne Ali.‌ In the ceremony, which dates back to 800 years ago, the people of four different local communities of the city, move toward the main mosque as they mourn for Imam Hussain, and after gathering in the yard of the #mosque, they ask the Mir-e Alam Daar - the Banner Man - to give each local community the specific ensign - the Banner- of their own.‌ ‌ ‌ Mostly men take part in this ceremony and #women just watch from rooftops. ‌ Then people of each community return to their own neighborhood with their #ensign and keep on mourning. In the way back, people pay tribute to the ensign of Imam Hussein #Imam Hussain. ‌ Each year, many tourists from all over country join the ceremony in #Masuleh. ‌ ‌‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‎#ماسوله#محرم#عزاداری#ایران#گیلان#علمبندان #شهید #امام_حسین #iran #gilan - @nimavahdani on Instagram

On Friday July 17th we lost politician/ civil rights activist John Lewis. People like Mr. Lewis laid it all on the line. His work and commitment to the enrichment of the black community spans over the past 6 decades and we are reaps of the work he has sowed and many more like him. I say to people today, You must be prepared if you believe in something. If you believe in something, you have to go for it. It took me a little bit to be able to formulate my thoughts over this post but I feel comfortable sharing this with all of you because I believe that you understand that what’s been happening the last few nights is historical and beautiful and terrifying. Years of oppression exploding inside the cities has the system terrified because they never thought it would come to this. There is no space for discrimination in my life and I consider myself a full blown supporter of the protest happening right now and I wish I could be out there with all of you. The time for change is now. The time for systemic deep rooted racism ends now. The time for all of us to evaluate relationships with people who stay silent begins now. If you take issue with my full blown support of the protests message me and I will gladly explain to you why I think your silence or non-support is disturbing or do us both a favor and unfollow. #blacklivesmatter #blacklivesforever - @williamperez_ on Instagram

The Georgia Conservancy, along with millions this morning, mourns the loss of Representative John Lewis - Civil Rights hero, community leader, and U.S. Congressman from Georgias 5th District. His legacy of doing what is right will continue to have a lasting impact - not only on Georgia but on our nation. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, staff, and colleagues. - Representative Lewis, a recipient of the Georgia Conservancys Distinguished Conservationist Award, was a champion of our nations natural resources and one the strongest defenders of the environment to ever hold seat in Congress. - “When we take our air, waters and land for granted; when we show a simple lack of respect for nature and our environment, we unmake God’s good creation. Humanity is the most important endangered species under threat from climate change and yet we flood our ecology with poisons and pollution. It is my belief that our country needs better environmental protections and that real protections do not have to come at the expense of jobs or our economy. ⚡️✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿✊🏼⚡️// The support we received on our fundraiser was far out of the scale of what we had planned for, and that has been amazing. Earlier this week we donated the first $20k of the funds raised to National Bail fund network. Next week the shirts start shipping out and doing the second part of the work - which is to help spark more conversation out in the world. We’re still in quiet mode over here processing all that is happening. We just sold out on the first set of shirts that we produced, and we’re looking at ways to keep this going. All that said we wanted to pop in and say - Y’all are beautiful. Keep it going! - @10deep on Instagram

Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.- Rosa Parks . I cannot fully put into words what this march meant for my family, but I think these images speak for themselves. It was a day that will forever be etched in our hearts, a physical experience to represent to our children what we believe to be right, and how we should act in support of our friends. . More images can be found in my BLM highlights- it was nearly impossible to narrow down favorites for this post. Also, some context for the last photo (worth scrolling to the end. I promise. 🖤😭)- One of the sweetest moments of the day was walking past a neighborhood and noticing this woman, who as we passed, quietly took a knee. . Thank you will never be enough to my dear friend @kjarbjar04 for organizing this beautiful event, and to so many good people who went so far out of their way to attend- those who drove an hour to be there, who came the morning of their daughter’s baptism, those who walked in the sun, 8 months pregnant with 20 minutes notice. You are such beautiful examples of love and compassion. Thank you. #familiesforblm #blacklivesmatter - @jesskettle on Instagram

a tale of two mindsets as much as a tale of two photos. taken less than 10 minutes and 10 feet apart. both cars, along with others, were at a stand still. one driver decided to climb on top of his box truck and take in the massive group of Tulsans marching alongside the rest of the world. a powerful thing to see. the other driver, however, became inconvenienced to a breaking point & decided the best option in that moment was to run through whoever was in his way. when i took this photo, i saw it so clearly through my viewfinder & when I got my rolls from the protest back it was as clear as I remembered. in the face of hatred & racism & everything that is wrong with this country we are constantly reminded why this movement is so important.. and we persist on - @fivvish on Instagram

w/ @imarn7170 .please swipe Throughout quarantine the desire of ‘getting back to normal’ has been floating around a lot. But maybe it’s about addressing the ‘normal’ we became accustomed to; the ‘normal’ so many assimilated to, the ‘normal’ so many are oppressed by. Conforming to a standard that practices racism is violence, and the masks are being lifted. This is what we are standing for. On and offline. Moving forward, question what you are doing to show direct support to the Black people in your life, and what steps can you make to address this global issue? Talk is cheap. Passivity is a position. Late actor Chadwick Boseman is being remembered and honored in Brooklyn. The large mural of Boseman was unveiled on Clarendon Road and East 56th Street in East Flatbush on Saturday. Artist Kenny Altidor created the mural which depicts Boseman as TChalla, the iconic character he played in Black Panther and other Marvel movies. Despite what he was going through, that man was still playing that role, being a superhero, Altidor said. I usually keep my thoughts to myself when it comes to incidents that happen across the country because I wasn’t there and getting into an argument on social media is a giant waste of time. But I have seen enough of my “friends” on social media talking enough shit to last a lifetime so here goes nothing. This is NOT ok. This is ignorance. This is evil. This is incompetence. This is a coward. This is a disgrace to the very thing we’ve sworn to protect. This is the 1% that tarnishes the other 99% that go out every day to serve and protect our cities and towns flawlessly with respect and pride. This incident and video makes me sick to watch. And what’s almost as bad are the other 3 just standing there watching this man die. So before all of you internet warriors who don’t have a fucking clue group us all together in with that piece of shit, do yourself a favor and stop. We are ALL just as angry as the rest of you. If you all want to protest peacefully and want justice for George Floyd, fine. But don’t you dare for a second put me and my brothers and sisters in the same group as this piece of shit. We are compassionate. We are professionals. We are selfless. We risk our lives for something we believe in. We don’t see race. We don’t see religion. Everyone’s life matters. We are the 99% that now have to pay the price. My thoughts go out to the Floyd family and to the good people at Minneapolis PD who are going through hell right now. March on Washington, 2020. ——————————————— And, time for a reminder to VOTE!!! Voting TIP for people who feel unsafe about voting in person but now fear the USPS will be unable to deliver a “mail-in” ballot in a timely fashion. 1. Request a mail-in ballot. 2. Do not mail it. 3. Google your supervisor of elections to see where you can drop off your mail-in ballot. Its usually NOT THE POLLING PLACE. All states allow this! Here is what youre accomplishing by doing this: 1. Your ballot gets in on time no matter what happens to the USPS. 2. You dont have to worry about standing in long lines and risking infection. Youre just stopping by to drop it off. 3. You still voted! Hooray! *Also, when you drop it off, find out how to track it online to make sure it is verified. California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado have systems that can track your ballot. ——————————————- #vote #voteblue #voteblue2020 #blackvotersmatter #march #marchonwashington #civilrights #mlk #atlantaprotest #blacklivesmatter #blm #blmmovement #protest #mlk #johnlewis #georgefloyd #irunwithmaud #jacobblake #justiceforbreonnataylor #kenosha #nojusticenopeace #justice - @cathyang3 on Instagram

Their sign says “how could you hate us when we love you?” It’s hard to find the words to do these demonstrations justice. To really say what it felt like to be there. The overwhelming love and support and community amongst the protestors, contrasted with the violence and aggression from LAPD. That first day felt eye opening to so many of us who have been privileged enough to not know what it’s like to be afraid of the police. That day I felt it. For one day, I felt a fraction of what POC feel every single day. We can do better. We have to do better. #toliveandcryinla - @tia.von on Instagram

Ask your city officials to make divestment commitments to their budgets! We already have organizations who do the work the police say they do but fail at - which is to serve and protect our communities! It was great to see the unity and solidarity from the people of Calgary this past week in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. And as a photographer, I believe that documenting this movement as well as raising awareness on my personal platform, is in part, my responsibility. . As I reflect the events that happened this past week as well as the events leading up, I realize posting a black square isn’t enough to make a real change and that it’s not enough to be “not racist”. . . . . #antiracism #justiceforahmaud #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforbreonnataylor #icantbreathe #protest #yyc #dontshoot #complex #complexcanada #filmgrain  #drivebyfilm #filmforever #burbsonfilm #believeinfilm #analogphotography #back2thebase #filmisnotdead #kodakfilm #filmwave #ilfordhp5 - @the_floyd_g on Instagram

“We have cultivated something unique, beyond calculation. The city couldn’t predict what would blossom inside the womb of a district it planned on pushing black and brown people away from. Who could predict that the birth pangs of the coming economic boom would actually be in part due to black culture? Who could predict that the very same people who weren’t allowed to live and buy property on this land in the past could now actually generate revenue from their LLCs and entrepreneurship due to that very same migration of implants? At first glance, much may appear grim but these are growing pains so let’s not convolute this message: The city needs us more than we need the city.” ⠀ __⠀ Written in 2016 by hip-hop artist, writer and activist @glennwaco. The city needs our black community more than ever today. And we stand with them. Life doesn’t make any sense sometimes. Especially when such an amazing person is taken from this world due to one of the biggest problems we have in this country. A pastor, a family man, a person who cared so deeply for his community. Greg was one of the first people I had the privilege of photographing when I was first learning how to use a camera at 17 years old. He shared his story with me and it greatly impacted the work I was interested in making. Today we may say goodbye, but his legacy will live on forever. First four images made back in 2013, last one from just a few months ago in the beginning of quarantine. Rest In Peace Pastor Gregory Boyd, you will be missed. If anyone has any information regarding his murder please call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Let’s do everything we can to stop the gun violence that occurs every day in this country. - @martina_tuaty on Instagram

✊🏽✊✊🏿• If you know me, you know I don’t normally turn to social media to broadcast my thoughts or opinions but I wanted to take a moment to speak up & I’ll keep it short. I don’t understand in a time when racial tensions are so high, how POC could stand so divided. This is a time for us to stand up for one another, to lift each other up. As an Asian-American I’ve dealt with racism & people reacting to me solely based on how I look. Being called chink, yelling ni-hao, pulling their eyes back, making faces at me. I’ve encountered racist attacks long before coronavirus & in a time of isolation I wish I could feel confident enough in the strangers around me to stick up for me if I needed it. What affects one minority group affects all minority groups. It’s not black vs white or yellow vs black –– it’s racists vs everyone else. - @alyoh on Instagram
