In 2019, researchers found microplastic in Arctic ice in greater concentration than in the surrounding Arctic Ocean waters. Earlier this year, explorers found plastic in the Marianas Trench in the Pacific, the deepest place on the planet. Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan, Peoples Republic of China (Kham, Tibet) #2: The first thing encountered when entering La Rinconada mine is an unregulated garbage dump, piled high with plastic, on the sensitive “pampilla” paramo ecosystem in the shadow of Mt. Ananea. Peru La Rinconada makeshift gold mine complex sits over 5,400 m (over 17,700 ft). Peru La Rinconada is the hightest permanent human settlement on the planet. There are no precise numbers but it is believed that somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 men, women and children live at the base of this Andean glacier, seeking fortune but most people here live in abject squalor of mud, snow, rain, mercury contamination and…plastic. This is the highest permanent settlement on the planet at over 5,400m (over 17,700 ft)], is free from plastic. Why do we say “wish cycled”? - less than 9% of all plastics ever have actually been recycled - it’s not failed management, its failed design. The misinformation campaigns, while having explicit knowledge of the problems, have been going on for 50 years and continue today. Should we believe these company’s (Dow, Dupont, Chevron, Shell, etc. and the lobbying groups like the American Chemistry Council who represent them) have any interest in anything other than profit today? In the article, Larry Thomas, a former plastic industry President reflects on the business he was a part of years ago… I dont think anything has changed, Thomas says. Sounds exactly the same. He says what he saw was an industry that didnt want recycling to work. Because if the job is to sell as much oil as you possibly can, any amount of recycled plastic is competition. You know, they were not interested in putting any real money or effort into recycling because they wanted to sell virgin material, Thomas says. Nobody that is producing a virgin product wants something to come along that is going to replace it. Produce more virgin material — thats their business. “And they are. In many European countries, including Germany, throwing away garbage is a costly affair. Whether it’s based on weight, volume, or some other system, it’s a way to cut down on the physical amount that people throw away. And I have to wonder, should we implement something like that here in America? So how would it work? Weighing scales? Measuring sticks? Special bags or containers? Well, on the website Reddit, a user called Nachteule breaks down one such service that’s employed in Germany. It basically uses different colored trash barrels for different kinds of trash. Here’s how Nachteule describes it: The Braune Tonne/Biotonne (brown trash barrel) for compost The Blaue Tonne/Papiertonne (blue trash barrel) for paper and cardboard The Gelbe Tonne/Gelber Sack (yellow trash sack/barrel) for plastic packaging The Graue Tonne/Restmüll (grey trash barrel) for trash that cant be recycled (for example a broken small electrics like a watch or a toaster, cold ashes, broken ceramics...) There is also a public service that will get old clothes that are still wearable to support homeless persons and January there is also the Weihnachtbaumabholung — thats the day they will collect your old Christmas tree for free. Each trash barrel has a fee based on the size and color. For instance, the grey 16-gallon trash barrel, for unusable garbage, costs around $140/year. Cause you know, karma....I cannot tell you how angry, disappointed and sad I feel! As most of you saw my post on Saturday that a group of us, 15 volunteers cleaned up a park, 35 bags of litter. It was arranged with the council like on other previous occasions that the litter will be collected on Monday morning. We never had an issue. Then the above happened... some low life scum decided its great fun to set fire to some of the litter we collected. Why?! Why on earth would you do that?! Im lost for words.... some people give up their very little free time to do something good for our planet. We are volunteers, we dont get a penny for litter picking, we do this to make our planet a bit nicer and cleaner.
