DEARBORN, Mich. (WDIV) A national Arab American foundation, based in Dearborn, has raised more than $180,000 to help support the ongoing relief efforts in Lebanon following the deadly explosion in August. The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) joined an effort by the Lebanon Relief Project, a nationally coordinated initiative led by the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) and the Ghassan and Manal Saab Foundation—to urgently airlift critical medical and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to Lebanon in the aftermath of the explosion. Since the explosion, the continued fundraising efforts benefitting the Lebanon Relief Project through CAAP’s Disaster Relief Fund have resulted in over $180,000 raised so far. Funds have been used to help the Lebanon Relief Project airlift over $12.7 million in high value medications and supplies to Beirut on August 24, and most recently, over $6 million on September 29. Due to the critical need and high demand, the group now has plans to airlift more supplies in the near future. 100% of all donations raised through CAAP’s continued fundraising efforts will go towards airlifting essential supplies and equipment and supporting relief efforts in Lebanon. This latest project builds on the success of the recent CAAP campaign launched on August 5, which resulted in a $75,155 grant to the Lebanese Red Cross to support their on-the-ground relief work. The blast in Beirut on Aug. 4 killed more than 175 people, injured at least 6,000 and left tens of thousands homeless. Even before the explosion, Lebanon was dealing with increasing poverty, economic collapse and corruption, while in the midst of a pandemic. It’s still not known what sparked the fire that ignited nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that were stored for years in Beirut’s port next to densely populated residential areas. Documents have emerged that show the country’s top leadership and security officials were aware of the stockpile. Success! Hong Kong officials have seized a historic 26 tonnes of shark fins! An estimated 38,500 endangered sharks, valued at $1.1 million USD were recovered inside a pair of shipping containers from Ecuador, revealed on Wednesday. Unfortunately, 90% of the shark fins were from protected species including 31,000 thresher sharks and 7,500 silky sharks. Customs officers arrested the importer, however, the 57-year-old man has been granted bail pending further investigation. South China Morning Post reported, “two containers arrived from Ecuador within 10 days of each other in January, but the huge haul was only discovered when customs officers opened the containers at their Kwai Chung cargo examination compound on April 28 and May 4.” Aside from the two Ecuador consignments, customs officers this year had already seized 15 tonnes of shark fins worth HK$5.4 million and made two arrests. A social distanced covid cleanup! Stopplastics did a trial run cleanup following all of the rules in these times of the corona virus. There were three of us...we each brought our own supplies, we distanced while walking and we cleaned up a mess of plastic waste. The cleanup took place in south Etobicoke along lakeshore blvd. and some side streets. It was blazing hot so our pace was slow. Nonetheless we managed to pick up a lot of stuff in the short time we were out there...lots of water bottles, candy wrappers, cigarette butts,plastic gloves and of course plastic bags. You can’t help but wonder how much of this stuff will make its way to our rivers and lake. In many European countries, including Germany, throwing away garbage is a costly affair. Whether it’s based on weight, volume, or some other system, it’s a way to cut down on the physical amount that people throw away. And I have to wonder, should we implement something like that here in America? So how would it work? Weighing scales? Measuring sticks? Special bags or containers? Well, on the website Reddit, a user called Nachteule breaks down one such service that’s employed in Germany. It basically uses different colored trash barrels for different kinds of trash. Here’s how Nachteule describes it: The Braune Tonne/Biotonne (brown trash barrel) for compost The Blaue Tonne/Papiertonne (blue trash barrel) for paper and cardboard The Gelbe Tonne/Gelber Sack (yellow trash sack/barrel) for plastic packaging The Graue Tonne/Restmüll (grey trash barrel) for trash that cant be recycled (for example a broken small electrics like a watch or a toaster, cold ashes, broken ceramics...) There is also a public service that will get old clothes that are still wearable to support homeless persons and January there is also the Weihnachtbaumabholung — thats the day they will collect your old Christmas tree for free. Each trash barrel has a fee based on the size and color. For instance, the grey 16-gallon trash barrel, for unusable garbage, costs around $140/year. Here are some aftermath photos from the last post. I found out a little more details on the video, it happened on November 14th in Port-au-Prince Haiti after a very quick but heavy 15 minute rain. The drainage systems are easily clogged and whatever is on the streets flows down to the lower areas of the city. If a rain is heavy enough it will all push out to sea. There is no garbage pickup in place and every restaurant uses valueless and polluting styrofoam. We need to offer better solutions to single use plastic pollution and its not fair to simply blame Hatiens for this. So much of this form of pollution is our first world failing to address the problem in our own countries as well as not holding multinational conglomerates accountable for dumping single use pollution into third world countries. It was arranged with the council like on other previous occasions that the litter will be collected on Monday morning. We never had an issue. Then the above happened... some low life scum decided its great fun to set fire to some of the litter we collected. Why?! Why on earth would you do that?! Im lost for words.... some people give up their very little free time to do something good for our planet. We are volunteers, we dont get a penny for litter picking, we do this to make our planet a bit nicer and cleaner.
