New blog post (link in bio) For the past 10 years, like other filmmakers, environmentalists and NGOs, I have been doing the “wrong things” for the “right reason”: adding strain to the Earth’s resources to help protect them, with intangible results. But that was before the crisis. Now we’re all living like hermits. We’re all doing the “right thing” of consuming minimal resources, for the “wrong reason”: an emergency situation that is costing the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Suddenly we are reminded that there is a “we”, not just an “I”, in that our decisions can mean life or death for others around us. There is a silver lining: air pollution, which claims over 6 million lives in a business-as-usual year, is plummeting. Carbon emissions are drastically reduced as cars, ships, flights and industry grind to a halt. What is left of Nature recovers partially from our constant abuses. These meager consolations for the tragic human suffering are likely to be short-lived: it would take unprecedented political will to reshape our societies to be both fair and sustainable. Natural disasters will become more frequent in a future where ecosystems are destroyed. We must protect nature, even if our intentions are only as narrow as to protect ourselves. Even if we fail to recognize nature’s inherent value and right to exist. Even if all we look at is the economic bottom line. We must not hope to return to normal, because normal was the enslavement of present and future generations, the discarding of nature as an externality, the consecration of individual greed. We are capable, as a species, of putting our irrational urge for perpetual growth on hold, even if only for a short while. When we defeat the Covid-19, it will be thanks to individual awareness and personal decisions as well as to governments for imposing temporary confinement. We could solve climate change, plastic pollution and over-fishing with the same instrument: the stroke of a pen. We could do the right thing for the right reason. It feels like years ago that I made this whimsical assemblage - Lawn Canon - with bound chunks of painted sidewalk, scraps of astroturf, and tree root fragments for @maiden.la and @montevistaprojects LOIMBY (lawn ornaments in my backyard) show. This was the first of several shows that were cancelled when everything had to shut down, so it feels especially joyous to be dropping this off today for High Beams - an open air show on the roof of parking structure in downtown LA by the @bendixbuilding community. This drive through, socially distanced, version of the exhibit is open to the public and one-night only. A virtual version is also up. Here’s an interesting #williefact : Willie Nelsons trademark braids sold for $37,000 at an auction in Arizona in 2014. The braids were cut off in the 1980s when Willie’s hair was still red and were the most talked-about item in the Arizona auction of items owned by the late Waylon Jennings, Willie’s cohort in the outlaw country music movement of the 1970s. Waylon was given Willie’s braids at a 1983 party thrown by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to celebrate Waylon’s sobriety. The identity of the buyer was not disclosed. Did you know that only about 6% of our population hunts? Last fall one of my closest friends and a hunting buddy helped a young lady named @kaylee_falleur73 get here first Bull. I heard the story and decided to give this gal a hat, which I rarely do! I went out to my buddies cabin and across the way I see a tractor going cutting hay and remined me of all the summers I use to do hay. There was this young lady driving the tractor and didnt think much more of it. After the field was finished I got to meet Kaylee and her Dad. She switched from her work hat to her Eat Elk hat and came over to introduce herself and thanked me for the hat. Then asked if I would sign it... totally caught me off guard. I was so taken by her politeness I decided to send her one of my brand new leather patch hats and a hoodie. To see the passion of a respectful young hunter is so priceless to me! So important if we want to maintain this lifestyle. A few weeks later she hand made me a card and wrote me a letter. Kaylee youre a first class lady! Keep up that positive attitude and work ethic! I wish you the best of luck this season and if I spot a bull in your area Ill let you know. The time and energy you put into your letter has made my day multiple times! Thank you so much! Locals: our local small businesses still need your love. 💗 I get it, it’s scary to think of COVID in our little town and it’s easy to hide away from all the tourists. We (small businesses) will still be here when the tourists leave and we still need you. If we want socioeconomic equality, then uplifting our small business owners, bartenders, baristas, service workers, servers, shop assistants is how we do it. We really appreciated your support during quarantine but seeing locals downtown is scarce these days. COVID is on the rise and you don’t want it, neither do we so we are doing a lot to protect ourselves and you in the process. Most of us still offer delivery and curbside pickup if you ask. There is a huge way to support local easily and safely and that’s at our Farmer’s Market every Saturday. Being outside is safe and just stay away from the folks without masks or better yet, ask those folks to don their masks so we don’t have to. Sometimes you meet someone and you instantly feel that you are going to be friends with that person for the rest of your life. I felt that when I met Laurie. She was an aspiring artist in her last year of college and expressed interest in exhibiting and working on projects and soon after she became apart of our team and family. Laurie Tobia was a bright, compassionate gem of a person who had a great passion for friends, surfing, travel and expression through art. Every person that I have known to come into Laurie’s life has only grown to love her. I’ve always appreciated Laurie’s surfer style laid back, no worries attitude. No matter what was going on around you; if she were present you instantly felt a sense of contentment and peace, and you were usually laughing a lot. She was never afraid to be silly and had a great sense of humor. She greatly cared about the people around her and it always showed in her actions. If someone were having an amazing day or had a great accomplishment she shared that joy as if it were happening to her. If someone were trying to hide sadness or discomfort Laurie would also read those feelings. She was very in tune with people’s emotions and would be quick to try to cheer them up. I’ve always admired Laurie free and adventurous spirit. She was always down for spontaneous projects, adventures, road trips across the country... She’s expressed how she would love to continue to travel the world creating art wherever she landed. Laurie was very special to many people. She was like a kid sister and a dear friend to me. My heart is crushed for her, for her friends and for her family. I’m wishing all who knew Laurie love, patience and my sincere condolences through this challenging moment. The mothers who are receiving the benefits of the Wordens green thumbs expressed their gratitude for the bounty. We all appreciate it more than words can describe. Times are very rough right now, and the boxes make a huge difference for our families, said one mother from the Kids Thrive program. Each box contains an assortment of organic vegetables, some of which are new to these families. One mother shared that she brought home vegetables that she had never even heard of before, but said, I cannot wait to learn how to make/prepare some of the stuff, and a peer echoed this, stating, It will be fun finding new things to cook. By getting good food into the hands of our most vulnerable we are providing that support they need to sustain their families through this crisis. When we meet people where they are, and assist in providing their basic needs, we will undoubtedly see them rise above their situation, said Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director of the United Way of Charlotte County. The Kids Thrive moms have already shown this to be true in rising above their past decisions and working diligently toward a better life for themselves and their children. All decisions to do with this painting are my own, and I wish to categorically remove any responsibility for its content from anyone else on my team and the individuals whose likenesses appear in this work. I asked these models to assume roles for an artwork of my own making. Their likenesses in this work in no way reflects who they are or what they stand for in their real lives. 30 bags of trash was collected today at Monument Lake by 20 caring volunteers during the annual Creek Week clean-up event. Most of the trash was cigarette butts, fishing lines, beer and soda cans, plastic beverage bottles and flip flops. This trash would’ve ultimately ended up in the lake. Mother Nature does so much for us and our health and we need to do the same for her and take care of her. When we were done collecting trash, we were blessed by the site of two majestic bald eagles soaring over the lake 🦅 . We filled our letter “N” with the trash for the Litter Letter Project. Last night the House of Lords voted by a majority of 307 to 212 to add #Amendment93 to the Agriculture Bill. This amendment will protect UK farmer from low standard imports by ensuring they meet or exceed domestic standards. Getting this amendment added has been a huge amount of work from an incredibly broad coalition of organisations across the country and is a real cause for celebration. However the fight is not over yet - the bill will now return to the House of Commons and well need your support to ensure that MPs keep the amendment in. By pulling together with this diverse coalition of farming organisations, environment and social justice groups, we can protect our food system, our farmers and our democracy. A few days ago, Wet’suwet’en Indigenous frontline leaders and solidarity activists facebook organization pages and hundreds of climate activists personal FB accounts were banned temporarily by FB for posting about a May 7th event targeting KKR, a major funder of the Coastal GasLink pipeline. The Extinction Rebellion US FB page was banned for 3 days recently for sharing the May 7th event as well. Facebook timed this ban to hit a few days before another event in resistance to this pipeline that was scheduled for 9/21. The event is now rescheduled to 9/28.
