3 YEARS OLD TODAY!! There’s more to Strange Hymns than you know. It had 7 producers as a result of our highly frustrating & totally confused time on a major label. (Kids, the money’s good but we don’t recommend it). Nobody had a clue what to do with us, and so they did the right (easy) thing and dropped us. So rather than disband disheartened with no album we thought getting on with it was a better idea. So we did. We took the 4 songs from different sessions the label trialed with different producers, we remixed 2 old demos & with only enough money (probably not even enough) in the bank we booked Echo Zoo Studios in Eastbourne in the spring of 2017, and battered out Dreamers, Sundial, You & Me and Bring Me To Light in 3.5 days. Done. I guess determination got it over the line in such a short time. That and the kindness of Mikey Rowe & Andy Britton. The thing we like about it most is that it somehow doesn’t sound like 7 producers. We got to work with great people and we’ll always be thankful for that. So stick it on. This is the John Prine I’ll remember: Playing on a soaked stage and refusing to cut his set early on account of rain. As I went up to hand him a dry guitar I asked if everything was all right. “Well I sure could use a hat” he said. I scrambled around backstage and found a 30A branded baseball cap (a fitting compliment to his dark black suit) and handed it to him on the next song. “Didn’t they have any cowboy hats back there!?!” He smiled, put on the ball cap on and continued to play. This is a photo of one of many many many nights spent at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I played there so many times, one time I actually fell asleep (passed out?) in the upstairs green room, they closed the club, and I was awoken around 4am by some very disgruntled staff members cuz I tripped the silent alarm 😂 Like every musician, I would not be doing what I’m doing without independent music venues. When it encourages you to slow down and keep looking although the photo is already taken. Learner’s Tip 📸 Notice how Linda’s image is literally sculptured by light. Technically we can say that about any photo, as that’s almost the definition of photography, but just look at the fingers and even the nails of the hand closest to us here: see how it’s beautifully painted with not very much light, how rich its texture is and how ‘real’ it feels? Zu Gast hatten wir René Kemp, der aus seinem sehr persönlichen und nicht selten lustigen Online-Tagebuch dich gibts nur dreimal für mich vorlas. Es war Renés erste Lesung und wir hoffen, dass noch ganz viele folgen werden. Der zweite Gast des Abends war Kristin Höller mit ihrem Debüt Schöner als überall - die Geschichte von Martin, der in seinen Heimatort zurück muss, dabei wollte er nichts sehnlicher als hier wegkommen. Auch Kristin Höller wünschen wir nur das allerbeste auf ihrem weiteren Weg als Autorin. Für musikalische Unterstützung sorgten an dem Abend @blushalwaysmusic - auch die beiden hatten im Literaturhaus ihren ersten Auftritt. This photo was taken one year ago at @riot_fest by my friend and drum tech @vicecooler. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to play such a big show but after talking to @kathiwilcox about it at length, I realized it was important that we play as women in music are not offered to headline festivals very often and as a feminist punk band it was even more of a unique opportunity. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this dream become a reality. As it turned out, it was one of the funnest things I’ve ever been a part of and as you can see in this picture, Kathi always has my back. Friends that push you to do things outside your personal comfort zone are so essential to being alive. I miss the feeling of being in a crowd, of being in an audience, of being on a stage. It’s officially my birthday. And I got to say this year has been such a huge roller coaster with many ups and downs but I’m glad I was surrounded by friends and family.
