This is the wreck of the SS America. It was built in 1940 for the United States lines. She’s carried many different names over her 54 year life, including SS America, USS West Point, the SS Australis, the SS Italis, etc. In may of 1941 she was called for service by the U.S. Navy, where she served for five years until 1946. From 1946 - 1980 she successfully served once again as a passenger vessel, although she was shuffled between several owners, and went through several name changes. In the 1980’s she was sold to yet another owner, who had the intentions of refitting the vessel into a prison ship. When those plans fell through she was sold to another owner who planned to make the SS America into a five star hotel ship, but unfortunately those plans fell through as well. On new years eve of 1993 the SS America was towed from Greece. At some point through the Atlantic crossing the tow lines snapped, and all attempts to reattach the SS America to the tow ships failed. It was on January 18th that the America Star (SS America), ran aground at its final resting place off the west coast of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands. Is gold a colour or a finish? Way back in time the effect of gold on a surface was achieved using ‘gold leaf’, real gold hammered to a thickness of 5 microns or about 1/8,000mm; that’s thin and it’s why a craftsman can lay it on any object. The technique goes back thousands of years. It wasn’t until the 1930s that cars were first painted gold, but only to special order. It seems that as paint technology became more sophisticated, gold became more over the top as a paint finish. The the arrival of ‘wraps’ as the final layer means that the customer can have as hideous an effect as his lack of taste can dream of. The gold paint on the Summers Brothers World Record holder ‘Goldenrod’ looked at its best under the harsh bright light of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Whilst 1970s gold like the Buick Electra 225 can show the form of that period of American car to perfection, Art Fitzpatrick could always be relied on to illustrate gold Pontiacs in all their splendour while real gold bars show how differently gold reflects light. Gil Alaya was one of the earliest customisers to experiment with metallic paint colours, one of the very few images of his Mercury built for Jonny Rosier show a gold and dark blue paint job which looks very cool. But a Rose Gold wrapped Lambo ……… well! Illustrator Paul Dove has a fine technique for painting something as dramatic as Henry Segrave’s ‘Golden Arrow’ Land Speed record car, and there is no doubt that the robot R2D2 took a shine to C3PO; I’m not sure that gold furniture would be to either’s taste but maybe the simple gold Corvette could have been. #c3po #gilalaya #artfitzpatrick #goldenrodrecords #goldenarrowhead - @peterstevensdesign on Instagram

The company’s live launch webcast will start at 10:30 a.m. and air on NASA Television and the agency’s website. The rockets flight path is relevant to lunar landings, providing a unique opportunity to mature sensors and algorithms for potential use on Artemis missions. NASA Langleys navigation Doppler lidar technology will be the second sensor system to fire up during the flight test. The new sensor uses a laser to enable precise soft landings on the Moon and Mars. Navigation Doppler lidar sends laser beams to the surface and detects the reflected returns to determine the lander’s velocity and altitude. I was running back to my house because I was late. My heart thumped with the effort and I was excited and nervous, in case I missed the launch. I ran into the house and straight to the TV where grainy, analogue images showed the Space Shuttle Columbia soaring into a darkening blue sky, immense columns of orange flame from its rocket boosters pushing it beyond Earth’s atmosphere and into space. I was 11 years old and it seemed to me that the whole world must be watching this. It was magic. And I was mesmerised. Words of wonder courtesy of London-based photographer @benedictredgrove, whose childhood passion led him to spend almost a decade capturing a huge catalog of high-key, perfectly-composed images of some of @NASAs most significant objects in a way they have never been seen before. Come July 9th of 1931, the second Vainamoinen class coastal defense ship of the Finnish Navy is launched, she is Ilmarinen! She weighs in at 3,900 tons, has a length of 305 feet (93 meters), and can make a modest 14.5 knots; armed with four 10 inch, eight 4 inch guns, and an assortment of AA weapons. Overall Ilmarinen has a peaceful career through the 1930s, her crew making visits to neighboring Scandanavian countries and other ports within Finland. The time not being spent on voyage or doing maintenance aboard is spent with playing cards and such-like games. There is one occasion in 1934 into the evening when Ilmarinen comes aground while underway to Vaasa. No.2 engine room is ruptured and she develops a list to port, worse still is the warship’s pumps cannot pump out the water faster than it was flooding. Due to this Vaasa sent in the coast guard to assist Ilmarinen and she’s taken in for repairs at Suomenlinna. By the end of November in 1939, the USSR invades Finland after demands over territorial gain fail. Ilmarinen, for her part, steams for Aland Islands to provide military supplies and support should they too be invaded. The natural ally to Finland finds itself in defense of the Island once ice begins to form further the conflict drags on into winter. Ilmarinen and her sister are better found useful for AA cover for the city of Turku against Soviet air raids. Some of the air raids see close calls for Ilmarinen, on December 25th she is near missed off the stern which causes minor flooding and kills one crewman from splinters. Although Finland lost the Winter War, a chance came to regain the lost land from Russia in June of 1941 when they join Germany in Operation Barbarossa. Ilmarinen and her sister, on July 12th, make for Hanko in support of Finnish troops to bombard the Soviet forces there. Specifically the air field is shelled, this being the first time Ilmarinen fires her main guns in anger. The warship doesn’t see much action between then and the beginning of September that year. In the Baltic Sea there are still some islands needed to be taken as the last pockets of resistance in Estonia. ((Continues below👇👇👇)) - @maritime_disasters on Instagram
