On this day in 1985: 35 years ago on the 21st September 1985 a monster was lifted from the depths of Loch Ness. That monster was a Wellington Bomber, which ditched into Loch Ness during a training flight on 31st December 1940. It lay hidden at the bottom of the Loch until an American team of Nessie hunters came across it during a survey in 1976. To save the aircraft a salvage operation was launched, led by Loch Ness Wellington Association Ltd. Thanks to public donations and funding from National Heritage Memorial Fund the WW2 bomber was successfully raised out of the Loch and transported home to Brooklands, the place it was built, for restoration. The Loch Ness Wellington, ‘R for Robert’, now takes centre stage in the Brooklands Aircraft Factory exhibition and you can come and see it and discover more about its incredible story every day the Museum is open. On Saturday, around 17h00, while guiding in Cypress Falls Creek, we came across a young couple in distress. The girl had dislocated her shoulder and was stranded at the bottom of the canyon, showing signs of hypothermia. Without hesitation, we (two guides and I assisted by our participants) engage a rescue and manage to get them out of the frigid canyon within 1 hour. Some of those we see implemented into our everyday lives today, yet some, like this turbojet train, have been left out to gather rust. These trains were powered by jet engines and could reach speeds of up to 160 miles per hour. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was directed by Michael Bay with cinematography by Ben Seresin, ASC. Following through on its promise to be a sequel, the story is told through explosions, gunfire, and loud vrooming noises set to voice-over in a nod to its core audience. Today we’re taking a look at lighting the first fight scene of the film, which takes place at night and sets up the premise of the plot: Fallen Transformers are out for Revenge. To acquire this crucial bit of dialogue, lots of army men and sentient cars drive around dodging explosions and shooting at one another. All of this took place on location at the Bethlehem Steel Campus in Bethlehem, PA. The factory had shut down years before in 1995, so there was plenty of room to drive fast cars and blow stuff up. The entire campus is 10 acres, but the set was contained to 16,000 square feet. Lighting this scene involved four nights of pre-lighting, three Bebee trucks, and 11 generators. One of the biggest challenges to this location was lighting the five, quarter-mile high, furnace stacks so they stood out in the night and rigging lights at their tops. Because there was so much movement and so many explosions, cameras were everywhere, which meant that all lighting on the ground needed to look purposeful. The stacks were lit from their bases with 12 Light Maxi Brutes and mini-nine lights to up-light them, while 12K LRX heads were rigged from the top to act as spotlights. Additionally, a Blackhawk helicopter was rigged with a xenon spotlight manned by @iatselocal728 members Erica Kim @itsericakim and Michael Schwartz to operate the focus as the explosions, guns, and cars whirled about below. The first time we met a comet, we blew a hole in it; for the sake of science of course! In 2005 NASA sent a probe (pictured) to crash into a comet orbiting between Mars and Jupiter in order to check out what was beneath the surface. The Deep Impact mission was successful but the debris from the collision messed up their plan, and they didn’t get to observe the results for 6 years. When they did, they found that the impact excavated about 5 million kilograms of ice and another 10 to 25 million kilograms of dust. So while comets are often called “dirty snowballs,” the results from Deep Impact suggest that “icy dirtballs” might be a better name. I was running back to my house because I was late. My heart thumped with the effort and I was excited and nervous, in case I missed the launch. I ran into the house and straight to the TV where grainy, analogue images showed the Space Shuttle Columbia soaring into a darkening blue sky, immense columns of orange flame from its rocket boosters pushing it beyond Earth’s atmosphere and into space. I was 11 years old and it seemed to me that the whole world must be watching this. It was magic. And I was mesmerised. Words of wonder courtesy of London-based photographer @benedictredgrove, whose childhood passion led him to spend almost a decade capturing a huge catalog of high-key, perfectly-composed images of some of @NASAs most significant objects in a way they have never been seen before. @cavedigger943 Report by Mark Hodge: After 10 months of work and 8 or 9 trips we have finally completed the job of building/hauling in track and assembled in cave (about 1 hour from the entrance) and we are now ready to start digging in Supersweet Dig in Helictite cave. There is 150 feet of this track to haul spoils. We drug it in in 5 foot sections. As you can see there wasnt much room to work at times. In this picture you can also see the trolley that runs on the track with very little friction.
