In 2012, @candicewiggins2 asked me to be a part of her passion project. Candice titled it Radical Chic. It is a tribute to 1960’s culture, the Black Panther movement , Blaxploitaton movies and the emergence and challenges of the WNBA. Read Candice’s important thoughts in light of George Floyd’s murder at www.candicewiggins.com. Her message is clear. We can all be freedom fighters, we can all be activists, we are all required to do what is in our power to fight an unjust system. Those with privilege must use that privilege to effect change. Black Lives Matter. Candice brought me a set of iconic images of the 1960’s. Images of Angela Davis, Huey Newton, Kathleen Cleaver and Pam Grier. She said, “I want to do this”. George Floyd’s murder exposed long ignored issues. Race issues that are obvious to BIPOC and happily ignored by privilege. Now we are hopefully seeing a path to change. I am hopeful we will finally see a better world. I am honored that Candice allowed me to make these images with her. These are the results. - - - - - Achieved with an incredible crew: @rebecca_longawa producing, @kmama12 and @amberyoungbeauty on hair and makeup, @ashleyelwill and @robinbrigham photo assisting and digital retouching by @karlherberphoto. - @davidshermanphoto on Instagram

As we enter the month of June in South Africa, we remember and honour the youth of South Africa who died for our freedom. Annually, WCTA has held grassroots tournaments to honour those who paved the way and gave their lives for a democratic South Africa. These are uncertain times we live in but one thing we are certain of...WCTA has never ever forgotten that we play our sport in a democratic society because it was hard fought for. Never forget. #wcta #grassroots #🔴⚪🔵 #islandersahoo - @western_cape_touch on Instagram

Welcome to « Feeling myself Monday... » With Anne Tourneux we wanted to imagine what would the modern day « Jazz » fly girl wear. Wanted to be retro yet firmly in the present. A nod to the past but with that future flavor. I think she definitely nailed it! What do you think? . . . . Although I have never considered myself a jazz singer... That is the box the press and labels have put me in. My music definitely does not hold in that box. Yes that is a @neweracap dress made by @pantheoneparis Styled by @closet_therapist Make and hair up by @anglomamakeup Photo by @benoitpeverelli Paris in front of @hotellutetia circa 2011 #ificouldonygobacktothatsize #istoppedsmoking #itsalldownhillfromnow #itsok #blackwomanmagic #indieartist #shereadyradio #broadcaster #womeninmedia #blackwomeninmedia #songersongwriter #blackamericanmusic #vocalist - @chinamoses on Instagram

Ive had a deep love for doo-wop music since I was a kid listening to the oldies station in the backseat of my moms car. But little did I know at that time that Indianapolis played a big role in the development of doo-wop music, and this week on Cultural Manfiesto Ill be sharing a selection of Indianapolis doo-wop classics, along with interviews from musicians who got their start in the Naptown doo-wop scene. Indiana Avenue was the heart of Indianapolis doo-wop scene during the 1950s, and you could even make an argument that the Avenue is the spiritual brithplace of doo-wop. During the 1930s on Indiana Avenue, the Ink Spots were innovating a new form of vocal music that would lead to the development of doo-wop. Their contributions to doo-wop were recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, when the Ink Spots were inducted into the organization’s hall of fame. Tune in to Cultural Manifesto this Wednesday evening at 8, and Saturday night at 10 on 90.1 WFYI for an hour of Indianapolis doo-wop classics. - @djkylelong on Instagram

This is my grandmother in 1950s Mauritius. For a black woman there at the time, access to education was a real struggle. My mother worked really hard to access a French high school based on merit, but migrating to France in the 1980s it was equally difficult to find a qualified profession. Despite this, my mother never taught me to fear any failure or rejection based on my origins or skin colour. Third generation and I am lucky enough to be one of the very few members of the mixed race and POC community at the Royal College of Art Fashion Masters program. Once I asked the Head of Marketing from a well-known British fashion institution at a diversity-oriented talk if there was anything done to increase the number of POC in Fashion and Design schools. It is apalling to think that, when the fashion industry has embraced diversity on the catwalk, the reality is far from being mirrored backstage. . There arent small diversity issues, the representation of all origins in fashion is a guarantee of cultural wealth, creativity and original individuals who share their specific experiences. If changes are made at this level, it will impact everything else. . Maybe you will have to work harder, with more dedication and perseverance, but drive does not have a colour so dont let others or institutions decide for you. .
