This is my grandmother in 1950s Mauritius. For a black woman there at the time, access to education was a real struggle. My mother worked really hard to access a French high school based on merit, but migrating to France in the 1980s it was equally difficult to find a qualified profession. Despite this, my mother never taught me to fear any failure or rejection based on my origins or skin colour. Third generation and I am lucky enough to be one of the very few members of the mixed race and POC community at the Royal College of Art Fashion Masters program. Once I asked the Head of Marketing from a well-known British fashion institution at a diversity-oriented talk if there was anything done to increase the number of POC in Fashion and Design schools. It is apalling to think that, when the fashion industry has embraced diversity on the catwalk, the reality is far from being mirrored backstage. . There arent small diversity issues, the representation of all origins in fashion is a guarantee of cultural wealth, creativity and original individuals who share their specific experiences. If changes are made at this level, it will impact everything else. . Maybe you will have to work harder, with more dedication and perseverance, but drive does not have a colour so dont let others or institutions decide for you. . 63 years ago today, under escort from the U.S Armyās 101st Airborne Division, nine Black students enter all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Three weeks earlier, Arkansas Governor Orval Faunus had surrounded the school with National Guard troops to prevent its federal court-ordered racial integration. This was one major step toward educational equity in the United States. Black Onyx Bolo Ties. The name onyx comes from the Greek for fingernail. According to myth, Cupid trimmed the nails of the sleeping Venus. The Fates turned those clippings into stone to prevent even a part of Venus from dying. Black has been associated with regeneration and new beginnings. It is said to be useful in fighting basic fears and in helping to create the opportunity to move beyond bad relationships--and to heal old emotional wounds. The Romans associated it with courage and it is thought to be useful when one is defending him/herself against unfair criticism. #blackonyx #cupid #venus #nativeamerican āŖ#āboloties #westernwear #ties #style #fashion #westernfashion #urbancowboy #cowboy #westernpleasure #westernwednesday #wildwest #bolatie #necklace #westernjewelry #handmadejewelry #summer #howtovideos #artsandcrafts #makeyourownjewelry #custommakejewelry #westernties #westernneckwear #texas #dallas #cowboys #duderanch #customboloties - @rockymountainwestern on Instagram

The Stonewall uprising, which Pride commemorates every year in June, was a protest against police brutality. Integral to this monumental event was transgender activist Marsha P. On September 22, 1947, John Hope Franklin published From Slavery to Freedom. The definitive history of African Americans traces origins in Africa, years of slavery, and struggles for freedom. Still in print with more than 3 million copies sold, the book has been translated into many languages. It is widely considered the definitive survey text for courses in African American history. Franklin held teaching appointments at Saint Augustineās and North Carolina Central before capping off his academic career at Duke, where an interdisciplinary and international studies center continues his pioneering work. During his storied career, Franklin served as president of Phi Beta Kappa, the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nationās highest civilian honor, in 1995. Aside from his role as historian, scholar, civil rights activist and adviser to presidents, Franklin was known for nurturing more than 300 orchids in his Durham greenhouse and helping to establish the Durham Literacy Center. One of the first self portraits I did 3 years ago was with a hat. Iāve grown to really love hats these days (especially since I havenāt gotten a haircut since shelter in place started 5 months ago š¬). I thought it was a killer photo and proudly posted it. ā£ ā£ Itās always great (if not mildly embarrassing) to compare old photos with the new. This self portrait I did today I planned ahead of time. I knew I wanted short lighting with negative fill from black vflats. I knew I would likely need a reflector to fill in some of the shadows as well. I also knew how to edit out some of the distractions and how to make the shadows more crisp and clean. ā£ ā£ But still, itās always good to see where youāve come from and hope to see more growth in the future! When I first heard [the phrase black peopleās relationship to landā] it was a new perspective, to āhave a relationshipā. And so it kind of evokes intimacy. When I think about my relationship to land, my family migrated from Mississippi when I was three years old and my father always talked about going back home... So inevitably, every summer that was our vacation -- to go to Mississippi. I really appreciated the connection to grandmothers house. And I still remember to this day, this long, gravel driveway to get to her house, and this long porch. And on one end was a swing. When I declare myself as a story teller, thats the memory that evoked Porch Stories for me. Its like looking out at the world, looking out at the world from my grandmothers place, and my grandmother being my first storyteller. Hey guys!! In my book Black Feminist Thought it demonstrates Black womenās emerging power agents of knowledge. Afrocentric feminist thought speaks to the importance of oppression. One distinguishing feature of Black feminist thought is its insistence that both the changed consciousness of individuals and the social transformation of political and economic ingredients for social change. New knowledge is important for both dimensions of change. Buy my book at your local Barnes and Nobles or online at Amazon. Enjoy!!!š¼š - @collinspatriciahill on Instagram

Reposted from @blackstory1619 As the Civil War came to a close in 1865, a number of people remained enslaved, especially in remote areas. Word of slaveryās end traveled slowly, and for those who were largely isolated from Union armies, life continued as if freedom did not exist. This was especially the case in Texas, where thousands of slaves were not made aware of freedom until June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston andĀ issued an orderĀ officially freeing them. Their celebration would serve as the basis of June 19 ā or Juneteenth ā a holiday celebrating emancipation in the US. Ironically, while Juneteenth has becomeĀ the most prominent Emancipation Day holidayĀ in the US, it commemorates a smaller moment that remains relatively obscure. It doesnāt mark the signing of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, which technically freed slaves in the rebelling Confederate states, nor does it commemorate the December 1865 ratification of the 13th Amendment, which enshrined the end of slavery into the Constitution. Instead, it marks the moment when emancipation finally reached those in the deepest parts of the former Confederacy. In many ways, Juneteenth represents how freedom and justice in the USĀ has always been delayedĀ for black people. The decades after the end of the war would see a wave of lynching, imprisonment, and Jim Crow laws take root. What followed was the disproportionate impact of mass incarceration, discriminatory housing policies, and a lack of economic investment. And now, as national attention remain focused onĀ acts of police violenceĀ andĀ various racial profiling incidents, it is clear that while progress has been made in black Americaās 150 years out of bondage, considerable barriers continue to impede that progress... #juneteenth - @jamsvy on Instagram
