Jag har ett speciellt förhållande till sälar. Jag har jobbat många år med att assistera vid sälobduktioner på museet. Och under många år var jag projektledare för ett avelsprogram för gråsäl i Forsmark. Kutarna som föddes i projektet släpptes fria till södra Östersjön. Innan dess frysmärkte vi dem (en slags tatuering på bägge sidorna av kroppen). Projektet avslutades för över tio år sedan men så sent som i våras träffade jag på en av ”mina” frysmärkta sälar, Silvia. Hon var 5 veckor då jag frysmärkte henne med ”S5” och släppte henne till frihet år 2004. Nu är hon 16 år. Jag lärde mig mycket om sälar under tiden jag ansvarade för avelshägnet. Vi hade bara två honor i hägnet men de hade verkligen olika personligheter. Om du ser en frysmärkt säl så lova att höra av dig till mig! Gråsälen kan bli uppemot 40 år så du har fortfarande en chans! Det finns tre sälarter i Östersjön och gråsälen är den största av dem alla. Sälarna var kraftigt hotade pga miljögifter, som gjorde honorna sterila. Antalet gråsälar låg på en miniminivå på 1980-talet, bara några få tusen fanns i hela Östersjön. Vi hade förgiftat Östersjön med gifter som PCB. Åttio år tidigare fanns det runt 100 000 gråsälar och 300 000 vikaresälar! Förutom att honorna blev sterila fick sälarna problem med tandlossning, benförändringar, skador på klor, päls och inre organ. Gråsälen fick verkligen betala ett högt pris för vår användning av kemikalier! På enheten för miljöforskning och övervakning är vi flera som jobbar med sälar. Det är viktigt att vi följer upp deras hälsa och populationsstorlekar. Just nu är det sex personer som jobbar med att obducera och provta de sälar vi får in (gråsäl, vikaresäl och knubbsäl) och två personer jobbar med inventering av grå- knubb- och vikaresäl. Dessutom jobbar jag med miljögifter i sälar. When I plan out training I do so with the intent of pushing the team to the point beyond what they have ever pushed themselves to do. What you dont see in the picture is that they have been up for the last 40 hours with only an hour or two of sleep, and whenever they werent eating or going to the bathroom... they were exercising. In this picture, they are to the point where the act of simply holding their arms out straight seems impossible. . By seeking failure in exercise, it doesnt show you the maximum of your potential, it shows you your potential for growth. If you were to get down and start doing push-ups right now, you might hit failure after 50 push-ups...keep failing. Next week you will fail at 55...keep failing and you will find growth. . This concept not only applies to physical training but mental as well. If you always feel like you know all the answers in a certain situation, then you are not pushing yourself enough. You have to make yourself uncomfortable and you have to test your resilience, your determination, and your body. É tão lindo acompanhar o comportamento dos animais marinhos saudáveis em vida livre 😍 Em parceria com a Fundação de Amparo ao Meio Ambiente de Bombinhas (Famab) estamos monitorando um grupo de leões marinhos nos costões rochosos do município. Na quarta-feira (23), a médica veterinária Adriane Steuernagel, que integra a equipe da Univali, esteve em campo para avaliar a condição de saúde de alguns indivíduos da espécie Otaria flavescens, o leão-marinho-do-Sul. São animais saudáveis, com bom escore corporal e integridade física. O que chamou a atenção dos órgãos ambientais é a permanência nas praias do município fora do período migratório. A Univali, via Projeto de Monitoramento de Praias da Bacia de Santos, aceitou o convite da Famab para realizar um monitoramento mensal no intuito de acompanhar a saúde dos animais. O leão-marinho-do-Sul faz parte da superfamília dos Pinípedes. Os deslocamentos sazonais ocorrem entre março e dezembro, partindo de colônias reprodutivas localizadas na costa do Uruguai, da Argentina e das Ilhas Malvinas. No Rio Grande do Sul é comum a ocorrência da espécie, principalmente na Ilha dos Lobos. Até então, este é o limite Norte para agrupamentos da espécie. Os leões-marinhos-do-Sul não reproduzem nas praias brasileiras. A juba parecida com a de um leão caracteriza o nome científico, mas é presente somente nos machos adultos. Os machos possuem uma camada de pelos em tons de marrom escuro e claro, já os pelos das fêmeas são pardos amarelados. A estimativa de vida de um leão marinho é entre 18 e 20 anos de idade. A agressão, proveniente da interação com a atividade pesqueira, se classifica como uma das principais ameaças à espécie. Esses tipos de interferências que perturbam o comportamento da vida silvestre são crimes ambientais. - South American Sea Lions (Otaria flavescens) are highly sexual dimorphic. The males sport a large mane and can be twice the weight of females.
Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

The 10th African Penguin release in Plett since 2017 was a fabulous event! 14 rehabilitated penguins back into the ocean with a great crowd of onlookers to cheer them on. A massive thank you to @tenikwa_wildlife for another excellent job getting these special endangered birds back up to full fitness. Сивуч теперь тусуется на бочке))) На этих выходных в субботу сходили тремя катерами на Аскольд, на о.Желтухина + о.Пахтусова + о.Рикорда, съездили на п-ов Краббе. В воскресенье сходили на 2 острова, на о.Желтухина + о.Пахтусова + о.Рикорда, двумя катерами на о.Аскольд и также съездили в Ущелье Дарданеллы + Орёл + Екатериновка. Ну и на выходных состоялась двухдневка в Лазовский район, б.Тасовая + Парк Драконов. 28 морских котиков спасли в Сахалинской области. ⠀ В августе на острове Тюлений в Сахалинской области прошли работы по распутыванию северных морских котиков от пластикового мусора. Это была первая в России экспедиция по спасению тюленей, запутавшихся в пластиковом мусоре. Ее организовали члены нашей коалиции некоммерческие организации Клуб «Бумеранг» @club_boomerang и «Друзья Океана» @oceanfriendsteam совместно с Камчатским филиалом Тихоокеанского института географии ДВО РАН при поддержке Фонда президентских грантов и рыболовной компании «Посейдон» (с. Лермонтовка). ⠀ В спасательных работах приняли участие 12 человек. Работа по освобождению морских котиков была непростой. В задачи данной экспедиции входила отработка техники отлова травмированных животных на берегу, их фиксации без применения седативных препаратов и освобождение от ошейников из сетей или упаковочных лент. ⠀ Несмотря на все сложности, спасателям удалось освободить 28 морских котиков. В основном это были молодые самцы и некрупные самки. Кроме распутывания попавших в беду тюленей, волонтеры убрали с лежбища опасные для животных обрывки сетей, веревок, доски с гвоздями, острое железо. ⠀ Освобождённые животные — это не только 28 спасенных от мучительной смерти тюленей, это 28 напоминаний человеку о безответственно выброшенном мусоре, который попал в море. Это 28 поводов задуматься каждому из нас о личной ответственности за сохранение планеты и океана. Сейчас на острове Тюлений и других островах Охотского моря сотни запутанных животных медленно и мучительно умирают. От каждого из нас зависит, будет ли их количество расти. ⠀ Гораздо проще предотвратить загрязнение, чем бороться с последствиями. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Whilst on another tasking this morning we were flagged down by a member of public to a seal pup they had found wedged in the rocks. Once freed from the rocks the seal was pup-sat by us then taken by British Divers Marine Life Rescue down to RSPCA - Mallydams Wood to be checked over and recuperate as it is rather underweight and has a few grazes. Thank you to the people who found it and BDMLR for taking it off to rehab. - @folkestone_coastguard on Instagram
